If that’s the only reason, then why is the time still on the top center of my iPhone SE?
There's still a difference between smaller devices and larger ones that probably plays a role in something like this. Can also be related to the possibility that future iPads will have a notch design as well in some shape or form.

Yes, but the iPhone X has a notch now, and yet there’s no effort to make my SE conform to that standard. Given that iOS can differentiate between devices such that it does not change things that are not relevant to an older device, why do it on the iPad?

Of course it’s possible the SE is the anomaly here. I haven’t seen a 7 or 8 yet, so perhaps Apple is conforming all current products to the next generation of devices, and didn’t bother with the SE?

All the same, seemingly arbitrary and not appreciated.

iOS 12 clearly has the ability to sense the device it’s on and adjust accordingly. Why not for the iPad?

Yup! I agree!

Just when you think Apple couldn’t get any more stupid, they needlessly mess with the keyboard layout. Why not let users choose how they want it? Even better, why not have the numbers across the top of the keyboard like literally every other keyboard in existence?

One day my iPad Air 2 will die and I can finally justify the price to switch to Android.

Could simply be some sort of an (inadvertent) oversight/bug.

Very annoying, can all complainers please send apple 'feedback' to get it changed back.

Thought I was losing it when I kept in getting emojis pop up when trying to get the @ symbol

Switched to Gboard .. problem fixed

I considered Gboard, but then... a Google app seeing everything I type on my iPad?
No thanks.

I’m more annoyed that the symbols are all in different places in the iPad than they are on the iPhone. It always makes it rather cumbersome to find them after being so accustomed to their location on the phone.

Fantastic news about 12.1. I've been using Gboard, but find my accuracy is worse on it.

this happens on my iphone too. Flips position in landscape and portrait

I wonder why the discussion is essentially just about the iPad if this kind of thing is on the iPhone as well.

I'm surprised this story isn't getting more attention...

With the update the left hand keys have been switched on the iPad... but remain in the old position on the iPhone... who the heck thought that was a good idea? I feel like I'm missing something ... along with tapping the wrong key on the iPad... why would anyone think these keys should be in a different place?!

Are others having this issues?
Now that iOS 12.0.1 addresses it for the iPad, on the iPhone it seems that those keys still switch places (I guess perhaps just like they always did) when comparing between portrait and landscape keyboard.
