Doing great here. But it's still the kind of upgrade a very few people need.
So make sure you have upgraded all the rest before you even think about this one
In other words, it has a limited ROI for most people.
Ugh - bad luck! Hope the new one works out better.I just had to RMA mine - worked for 5 months, then died overnight. Quick and easy process, but I haven't had to RMA an SSD in years. I could be just one of the unlucky few. New one is working fine.
I just scored a 2.26 8-core 2009 Mac Pro, first one ever yay!
I'd like to partition it dual-boot with one of these..sounds like this will work, no??
Hi,
My OWC Accelsior E2 boot drive just died. Is the Kingston SSD still my only option if I want to get another PCIe SSD? Could I just get a cheap Samsung EVO 950 as an SSD boot drive whilst the warranty situation plays out on the E2?
Cheers.
Ah, so even the samsung SATA 950 pro SSD wouldn't be bootable? My colleague has several of them mounted in his 5,1. They work fine but he's not booting from them.
thanks for the info. So the Kingston drive looks like the most (and only) available PCIe SSD here in the U.K. It's a shame the cheaper SATA SSD's need that hack. No, unless you know how to white a custom firmware to the 5,1 by yourself。

And this support will happen for the cMP? Great news if so.NVMe support is rumored to be coming with High Sierra...
Confused now.I think you mean NVMe SSD. SATA SSD are bootable on cMP.
That does not help cMP users - this is only for using the drives in OS; booting from NVMe requires an EFI update which Apple will certainly not do for these.

Confused now.
I asked above: "Ah, so even the samsung SATA 950 pro SSD wouldn't be bootable" to which you replied it wouldn't be. I think we've misunderstood each other. You're saying the SATA 950 pro SSD 2.5" drives that slot into the drive bays of the cMP with an adaptor ARE bootable? Thanks.
It's hard to tell, because it seems that they need to upgrade the 5,1's firmware for APFS support. No one knows if that will include the NVMe support.

There is NO 2.5" SATA 950 Pro, all 950 Pro are NVMe. Since I assume you were asking 950 Pro, but not any other SSD. So, my answer was focus on 950 Pro, and the conclusion is not bootable.
Ah dude, apologies for the confusion! I was talking about the 850 Pro and /or Evo: http://tinyurl.com/y92b7bpu not the 950. My fault. I assume that the 850 is bootable?
Hello everyone! Just bought an used cMP 5.1 mid 2010. This is the configuration:

I changed the Ram (8 gb udimm to skhynix 32 gb rdimm) and the CPU (xeon w3690). I also bought a Kingston Hyperx Predator 240 gb PCIe SSD that I installed in the Mac with this adaptor: https://www.ebay.com/itm/PCIe-M-2-NGFF-SSD-Adapter-Karte-for-Apple-Mac-Pro-2006-2012-Samsung-SM951-PCI/162641884709?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
I'm able to boot from the disk and it gets recognized by the computer but the speedtest shows unexpected results:

This is the r/w speed using PCIe slot 2. Using slots 3 or 4 results in even worse r/w speeds in the like of 180/190 MB/s. The toshiba hdd in the same mac scores 115 MB/s. What could be wrong? The only thing I've installed are OS updates and blackmagic disk speed test. Could it be the adapter card? Or the SSD is Faulty? System report says tha the SSD has a 1x link... is this normal?

Thanks, I'll try to reseat it and see if it does change something. Unfortunately I bought the ssd alone without the adapter and now i don't think I can find the adapter only Can you suggest a good m2 to pcie adapter? It's indeed the PCIe 2.0 x1 limited the speed at that level.
If the speed further cut into half if you put that in slot 3/4, may be it's negotiate at 2.5GT/s x1, but not 5.0GT/s.
It's really hard to tell which part is wrong without proper test. However, I personally will guess it's the adaptor.
Since you tried slot 3/4 already. Therefore, seems reseat the card won't help. But did you try to reseat the SSD? May be poor contact between the SSD and the adaptor? The screw too tight? too loose?
TBH, for HyperX Predator, it's much better to buy the option that come with the PCIe card (adaptor).
