I want a 24" now just to wall-mount it!

Does anyone know why they removed that feature though?

kinda wut im going for with my PowerTV mod...tho im not sure if i'll mount it yet.

nice!

That is an awesome project, color me jealous! Granted I won't have my own kitchen that's large enough that's my own for many many years.

Damn you Cybix!
I was perfectly happy with the new kitchen, paint isn't even dry yet and they still have to install the bar top they broke on countertop installation day. Now, the wheels are turning, and it will cost me money.

There is no place for the imac, unless I set it in the corner, under cabinets. However, I can see a new mini in the upper corner cabinet, with a monitor mounted underneath, all wires hidden up behind the corner cabinet (there's a triangular gap of about 3 inches) and fishing electrical up from a plug above the counter. Wireless keyboard and mouse lurking in the drawer below until called forth...

The corner's perfect, away from the sink, cooktop, ovens, dishwasher, frig, everything.

Cybix, I hate you. The house isn't even done yet and the computer mods are running through my wee little head.

You just had to ruin everything...

spork, the drama's of house building/renovations! haha

the mac mini idea sounds great, definately something to consider! Thats the way I was originally going to go (for low cost), but when I found my iMac for cheaper than a new mini, I went with it...

I'd like to see some pics of the kitchen when you've got it sorted! sounds great!

well. I'm thinking it might be a time for a RAM upgrade on the kitchen mac!

currently has 512MB (256x2)... could do with 1 or 2 gig I'm thinking!

"Crucial RAM"?

Mmmmm 2GB would make it absolutely fly!!!

I've bought nothing but Crucial for my now sold Mac mini and MacBook. Can't go wrong with Crucial, except it is a little bit more money.

Here's some stuff that made this project possible:
...
this thread in MacRumors for inspiration, but obviously not as cool a thread as this :)

 Oi! The cheek of it!

Very nice job you've done there. Now perhaps I should move my wall-mounted iMac to the bathroom to try to out-do you :D (j/k)

I would never buy from Crucial. You buy Crucial RAM through a reseller like OWC or newegg.com. I sort of hinted at that in my previous post in regards to their pricing.

hi cybix,

thought i would post to ask you how you are liking the mounted G5?

any dislikes? anything you would have done differently?

i'm in the market for a used imac for the same thing. same ideas as you plus i want to use spanning sync to sync googlecalendar which my wife updates from her work. i'm the stay at home parent and with her job, she can be out at different times so it's good to keep the schedules organized. likewise, i can update her sched per my workouts and sports and of course, the kids stuff.

any feedback would be great.

Cheers,

How did you know I'd need this thread?

Amazing job! I've been thinking about moving my iMac G5 20" (no iSight) into my kitchen for some time, since my daughter will be getting her own computer this coming spring, and we'll officially be out of space in our study. I use the computer constantly (don't we all?), so the kitchen is the logical place for me.

I've spent a good part of today trying to locate the VESA adapter that I need for the computer, and making sure that it IS compatible with my mac. Apple doesn't sell them in the US anymore (the adapters, I mean), so I need to buy them from a third party- which is ok, since I just confirmed with Apple that it will work with my iMac. For anyone who has an older iMac, the original VESA adapter from Apple is part # M9755G/A- it seems like it will only work on the second generation IMacs- 17 and 20 inch with ALS- no iSight, and not anything after the iSight (they have their own adapter part number, which is apparently still available). The part is available from the Hong Kong Apple store online, tho- doesn't help me!

Thanks for all of the info and support via this forum and the PDF!

hey shopper, thank YOU for the info on the adapter. i've been looking for an imac and wondered about the adapters. i might just wait for the supposed new imacs to see if both sizes can be mounted. and who knows, maybe if they add some connects for TV etc..., i may just put it in the living room. time will tell.

good luck!

still loving it, going strong, still hasn't had it's RAM upgrade yet, but it seems all we use it for is web, email, iTunes and iCal, primarily, and sorta as a file server too!

Wouldn't do anything differently!

Spanning Sync sounds interesting, I haven't heard of it. I use PHP iCalendar: http://phpicalendar.net/

Works great! but you need some webspace somewhere to run it :) we have all three mac's syncing via PHP iCalendar :)

good luck!

Just finished reading this thread - great project you have here, Cybix.

Thanks, I'm considering starting a web site, dedicated to it! "shrug"

Welcome! hope you sorted out your VESA mount fiasco.

I see the newest 24" iMac is apparently wall mountable? Interesting :) but probably wouldn't suit my kitchen!

Well, it's been a while now, I've slowly been compiling some information, content and writing some reviews, etc...

I'll soon have a dedicated site online for mac's in kitchens! (or computing in the kitchen in general I spose) which will feature this kitchen mac, recipe software reviews, actual recipes, howto's, pics, etc...

will post back when I have something to look at! still deciding on a framework for the site! maybe wordpress.....

You gave me the bug now!

thinking of doing something similar with one of these

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ModBook

Pretty cool :)

I'm still working on my kitchenmac site.

the URL is http://www.kitchenmac.com/ for those that want to take a look, but unfortunately it's not yet finished. I forgot to backup my iWeb sites in Tiger before upgrading to Leopard, so I might have to start from scratch again, boo!

Plan to have recipes online, video's, blog posts and more. Photo Gallery is up however :)

cybix, you should contact apple and do one of those 'success stories' blurbs. i know it's usually business related, but you could describe how you're doing it and the reasons why. contact their public relations.

i think your website is awesome. your idea has completely inspired me, but i bought a 24" refurb'd imac and kept it downstairs. this allows me to avoid using a PC while my other macs work.

BUT, next on the agenda is an older, mountable imac to do EXACTLY what you are doing.

it would be neat if you could find a way to hijack front row to use the macgourmet s/w. would be neat to scroll through the recipes and control it completely. hmmm. too bad I wasn't smarter and knew how to program :)

Best of luck,
Keebler

I doubt apple would be too interested considering I'm using an older Mac, and I don't know if the new iMac's are wall mountable? I think the 24" is? might have to look into it

Browsing recipes in frontrow sure would be cool! Although my iMac doesn't have an apple remote, At least in leopard you can run Frontrow from the applications folder and navigate through

good pt about the older imacs, but maybe they'd be so inspired to give you a new spanky imac :) lol
