It's good to have more manufacturing in the US, but not EVERYTHING needs to be made here. We need to pick and choose what makes the most sense taking into account resources/supplies, needed skills, etc.. Then we need to give incentives (not penalties) to encourage more domestic manufacturing

Just have Foxcon announce they're going to build a big and beautiful multi billion dollor iPhone assembly plant somewhere in the U.S. (Wisconsin?) Trump will believe them like he did before. By the end of Trump's 2nd term, Foxcon can say that due to changing market conditions, they have to reduce their planned investment.
I think they have promised twice to do that but of course, no factory.

We paid an even bigger price the last 4 years after electing the last guy. Spending an extra few hundred on an iPhone pales compared to how much food, energy, house and other ESSENTIALS have gone up UNDER THE LAST GUY. Many thousands have left your wallet due to massive inflation since 2022.

But “ the price of my beloved iPhone might go up !!!!!!”

Now you people care? Because it affects your stupid phone.
It's not quite that simple, prices went up due to supply chain issues, as well as a ton of inflation. Due to both Trump 1 and Biden (more so Trump 1)

Problem is that if Apple ignores Trump's request to move to the USA - and just pays the 25% tariffs, Trump will just keep increasing the tariffs to 200% or so.

Apple’s one of the most widely held stocks in retirement accounts in America. If he keeps pushing he won’t last his entire term, because the public will destroy his party and force his removal.

And? It works for him. I’ll argue hardcore that what Trump acts like in front of the camera is nothing compared to what some of these monsters act like behind the camera. On both sides. In fact it’s widely reported Trump is pretty chill while the cameras are off.

Trump is raw and lays it out there for all to see. Like it or not. You know what you’re getting compared to vast majority of politicians that are total snakes.
How is that relevant to the discussion about tariffs?

Just pay the tariffs and move on. Is more economical than investing in a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant that will take years to complete and cost billions to build. Hopefully, Apple can ride out this buffoon’s term. Unless he declares himself a dictator and never leave.

I agree, let the tariffs come, but Trump will deal with the negative consequences at the mid terms.
I think Trump and company will end elections by that time. I am not sure but I think Trump is just a figure head and the real power is probably a group of people calling the shots. In maybe 5 to 10 years, we will have machines doing the manufacturing so the price to build will be comparable to China.

Ironically the main beneficiaries of this move will be the Chinese brands who don’t currently sell into the US market.

I remain so happy with my vote!

With regard to the tariff comment this morning, none of us know what’s going on behind the scenes and who’s telling who to go screw. So far the policymaking has been spot on, so I’m willing to cut him some slack to see what happens with this or how this is impacting other negotiations.

Bottom line? None of us know enough of what is going on across the globe to pass judgment yet.
The policy making is presidential dementia part 2. Why is Trump targeting Venezuelan people to deport them by revoking their temporary status en-masse? Why is he having indictments brought against political enemies? Why is he ripping core elements of the Constitution like Habeus Corpus and Due Process to shreds? Why is threatening Walmart with socialist price controls?

I remember when Republicans stood for upholding the Constitution and promoting free market capitalism and hands-off government.

If you think the policy making is spot on then maybe you are ignorant to the abuse of power and constitutional disregard or you are also suffering from dementia.

This tariff roller coaster is crazy town and a US made iPhone that can compete with Samsung is pure fantasy.

Ok...lets walk though this tariff as if its reality right now. Ok....You got an average education. High School GED, maybe a few semesters of college or some trade school but no College degree because you cant afford tuition and dont want to spend the rest of your life in student loan debt and your town is now opening up an Apple Factory nearby and they are looking for help.

You figure, hey, Apple...huge brand name, major coporations with massive profits, lets work for them building iphones, why not! You use them all the time, might as well build them as well.

You go in and apply, and they take you with barely an interview and you find out your making minimum wadge...maybe even less now that a law has passed that companies can pay you what THEY want to pay you and what they think is fair...because...well you dont need alot of money anyways...your basically cattle to them.

But for arguments sake, lets say the jobs a full time job, but at minimum wadge and no promise of a raise, advancement, health care, benifits, hell you dont even get an employee discount. Your lucky if you get bathroom breaks and a lunch break.

But hey its a job right..so lets do it. Your working 8 to 12 hours a day depending on whos the manager that day, sitting down (if your lucky cause seats cost money) screwing tiny screws into the housings of iphones all day non stop. We are talking hundreds if not a thousand phones per day in the most repetitive job you can think of.

But dont screw up once, you're fired and someone else will take your place and there goes your minimum wadge paycheck that you cant really live off of anyways.

After rent and ulitities and bills, you barely got enough money for basics like food and soap and clothing and forget assistance from the goverement. Foodstamps? Na, that cost them money. Healthcare...please...better find your ass a better job despite there being none. Your on your own. You wana work hard, save up, buy a house, start a family of your own? Yeah right...keep dreaming, but do it on your own time.

Hell you cant even afford to buy the phone your spending 8-12 days your building. Your still using an iphone from 4-5 years ago cause no one can afford a new one.

Now, one day your tired, working hard and you have an acident...you screw right into the palm of your hand with an electric screw driver...and your out of work for a while...thats time spent healing not paid, and you need to be paid because you cant afford the healthcare you need to get your hand back functioning to use the electric screw driver.

But it doesnt matter anyway. Apple is laying off people left and right, because its got too many iphones in a warehouse it cant sell because even sold at cost to make them with no profit, they still cost too much for most people so they cant even give them away.

Sales are tanking, jobs are being lost cause apple is not going to pay you to make phones it cant sell even at cost, and now the company is bleeding out money left and right just to keep the lights on, it cant sell anything because no one can afford to buy what they are making...and everyone ends up out on their ass broke because some orange idiot thought in his mentally warped head this would be a good idea and a bunch of selfish coward politians were too scared to stand up to him and say maybe "Hey this isnt going to work the way you want it too"

But hey does it matter? they got paid. they got their slice of the pie....screw the rest of ya.

Thats America now.

If it is so be it. Jesus has the last say anyways. I just hope that the country isn’t lost for good. Very very sad.

I was so looking forward to being one of the millions of folks screwing in the little screws!
Millons of Americans are already screwing little screws. Doing their best with what they got. No shame in that.

If Apple announced they were going to do that, within seconds, Trump would say the tariff is 50%. Then 100%. Then 1000%.

We are dealing with a madman- who on top of being a narcissist sociopath, is an absolute moron. He is far too stupid and egotistical to ever admit, or even know how stupid he actually is.

Of course, all of this could be stopped by Congress, but we have a Republican majority that is petrified of this absolutely insane person.

Overall, this only ends two ways: 1) The Republican caucus finds its spine and other body parts and removes him from office via impeachment or the 25th Amendment; or 2) a Big Mac send from Heaven does its job.

There is a third way: Apple sues and this gets blocked by a judge and remains in legal limbo until either of the choices above happen.
Yes. Apple should do like Harvard is doing and sue him. Then there will be a lengthy appeal process, and this is the type of thing that Trump does to get out of his legal dilemmas. Americans should make Trump a gift of Big Mac and Ice Cream.

I just asked Gemini the exact same thing and here’s the response.

US-manufactured cars are not as common in the UK and Europe primarily because they are often too large for narrow European roads and parking, less fuel-efficient in markets with high gas prices, and face strict emissions standards. Additionally, strong local and other international brands cater well to European consumer preferences for smaller, more agile vehicles, and there's a perception that American cars don't always match European tastes in design and refinement. High import tariffs can also play a role.

As you can see, import tariffs are only a tiny part of that equation.
I'm so relieved now that Gemini has put an end to our human debate. Ask Gemini if the BMW 3-, 5-, or 7-series sedans, or the Mercedes C, E, and S class cars suffer from poor sales in Europe because of the narrow roads, or because they aren't very fuel efficient.

This, as I have shown, is false. Trump’s numbers were the stuff of fantasy, and shame on Newsweek for not pointing that out.
You most certainly haven't shown the 99% figure was false. Granted, that figure isn't the raw tariff number, but just because you're skeptical of the complex formula used by the WH to arrive at that number, or choose to believe the unnamed anonymous sources mentioned in the article over the US Government, doesn't make it untrue.

Clearly free market capitalism, civil liberties, and meritocracy aren't for you. Plenty of socialist countries across the pond you might enjoy more. Heck, you may as well just skip the long downward spiral into eventual tyranny, and head straight to North Korea. I hope you like eating insects and grassy weeds. Not many meats over there to speak of, Big Al.

This president doesn't care about what he is allowed to do. He only claims the authority for any of these tariffs by lying that there is a national emergency.
As opposed to both of his immediate predecessors right?

He might be a name in the the Apple business world/supply chain, but this is politics. And anyone following US politics knows that 25% is just the beginning.

T wants something out of Apple. And it's not necessarily only the manufacturing. It could be something else when he gets Tim to sit down with him.
Trump wants a Vision Pro.

It’s false because the Department of Commerce says otherwise, and the President’s precious “formula” obviously ignored what Commerce says. I honestly don’t know why you’d believe the President’s numbers over those of the federal department whose tasks directly require knowledge of foreign tariffs, especially since the President’s completely un-vetted numbers included a tax on penguins (do we really have to go there again?). His numbers are based upon trade deficits, not actual tariffs, and that’s what makes them both false (because he called them “tariffs”) and stupid.

You can choose to believe the President’s sweet little flannelboard if you want, though. That doesn’t make them anything other than fantasy numbers someone (ChatGPT? Probably) dreamed up, though.

Pure trade imbalances in a vacuum (absent tariffs or other barriers) aren't necessarily the problem. It becomes a problem when countries dump their product into the US with minimal tariffs or other duties, but that country then either doesn't allow the US to export goods into their country, or places tariffs so high on our goods that we can't compete for consumers. Reciprocal trade is the answer.
Agreed, so tariffs based on barriers to trade, would be more appropriate
