I thought Apple switched to making their own silicon because Intel was too slow to innovate. How come Apple is so slow with their updates when they own the whole stack now?
Apple is on top of this game. Maximum customer acquisition due to chip advantage is probably already achieved. Makes sense not to rush further.

I don’t understand why Apple hasn’t launched larger iMacs? We should have 42” options, never mind 27” or 32”. It’s nonsense.
I wonder if Apple just intentionally puts dumb things in their lineup in order to make their customers feel "smart" when they buy a different model instead? Right now the "smart" choice is a Mini or Studio with a third party monitor. (I chose a 42" 4k TV.) Or a laptop, if an iPad doesn't work for you.

I'm done with iMacs, and you should be too.

If you think you want a new iMac, you don't. You want a mini and a monitor. If you really want an all-in-one, get a mini and a monitor, and get a VESA mount to stick the mini to the back of the monitor.
I been waiting but think you’re right. With that setup I’ll maintain the monitor and can get a new mini more often

Apple has 3 form factors for displays.

iMac

24-inch 4.5K Retina display

  • 4480-by-2520 resolution at 218 pixels per inch with support for 1 billion colors
  • 500 nits brightness
  • Wide color (P3)
  • True Tone technology

Studio Display

  • 27-inch (diagonal) 5K Retina display
  • 5120-by-2880 resolution at 218 pixels per inch
  • 600 nits brightness
  • Support for 1 billion colors
  • Wide color (P3)
  • True Tone technology
Configurable with:

  • Nano-texture glass
Retina 6K Display

32-inch (diagonal) IPS LCD display with oxide TFT technology

  • Resolution: 6016 by 3384 pixels (20.4 million pixels) at 218 pixels per inch
  • Aspect ratio: 16:9
XDR (Extreme Dynamic Range)

  • Viewing angle: Superwide angle with high-fidelity color and contrast at 89º left, 89º right, 89º up, 89º down
    Fully laminated; 1.65% reflectivity (typical)
  • Contrast ratio: 1,000,000:1
  • Color: P3 wide color gamut, 10-bit depth for 1.073 billion colors
  • XDR brightness: 1000 nits sustained full‑screen, 1600 nits peak1 (HDR content only)
  • SDR brightness: 500 nits

In order for Apple to add an iMac 27" they'll have to bump both the Studio Display and Pro Display XDR up as well.

The Studio was designed to cover the largest circles of user case segments and the iMac was the all-in-one that would never have the same equivalent specs as the Studio Display.

The Pro speaks for itself.

If you want an iMac 27" 5K added then Apple will have to add a 6K 32" Studio Display and then a Pro XDR with a 34", 39" or 42" diagonal or longer.

Then a bump on NITS and Contrast Ratio across the board you will have a price increase across the board.

Apple's goal is to move to MicroLED for all displays, but will have to start with the Watch, then the iPhone, then the iPad and last the Monitors.

Absolutely embarrassing for Apple, no update in 3 years?

Was a simple M2 chip swap last year too hard? Oh wait, they were too busy updating all the laptops in their lineup 4 times each in the same amount of time.

Good thing the iPad Pro will be getting the M3 at the same time as the iMac, cause as we all know the iPad is a work horse! Facebook, Netflix, and so many Safari tabs open at once!

I have a late 2013 27" iMac, and have been waiting already a few years to update because I'd love a new 27". Some here suggest Mini + Monitor is better. But man the Studio Display is so expensive. Many other good monitors do not have webcam (a must for me) which is yet another piece of hardware. Ok, indeed I can upgrade separately, but much less elegant and cables free solution than a 27" iMac. However, I am happy to be convinced otherwise.

Yes

The chips are not the same size. It is not a simple chip swap. The logic board need a new layout. The M1 logic board is small but it is relatively dense. This makes any layout change, verification & validation more complex. That doesn’t even include updating Wifi and Bluetooth.

And they sold how many laptops as compared to iMac?

They have literally released 13 new iPhone's since the release of the M1 iMac... I think they have enough resources to design a new logic board in a timely matter.

I bet the M1 iMac sold way more than the M1 Mac mini, but the Mac mini still got updated to M2 in January. So where is the M2 iMac?

That is a better question.

I suspect the answer is not related to engineering but it is related to sales and marketing. (It is those damn bean counters again!)

Kinda sad how the product that saved Apple from bankruptcy is now being treated this way lol
In fairness the G3 iMac came along at a different time and in a rather different market. Today phones, laptops and maybe tablets are the bread-and-butter of the computer hardware market. Today when people think of Apple they think of iPhone and MacBook with maybe iPad mixed in there somewhere. The iMac hasn’t been foremost in the public mind for ages. Desktops are barely on the public radar anymore.

And I say this while being a fan of the iMac AIO form. I’m tempted by the Mac Studio, but it bugs me that at that price point you still have to buy a damned keyboard and mouse let alone a display. And to get a display as nice as the iMac’s ain’t cheap.

Yeah, there is the Mini. But honestly I think it looks ridiculously small and unserious. I know thats purely subjective, but there it is.

I want my iMac, dammit!

this 24” iMac just sucks overall. I was about to bite the bullet and upgrade my 2012 27” iMac until they removed the option and forced you onto this new colorful piece of plastic crap. No thanks.

To me the chin still feels like a distinctive feature of the iMac - without it, I feel it looks like any other screen/AIO.

If only Apple had the capabilities to make premium screens with beautiful metal alloy casings without putting a full processor in it...

In most things yes. But I can walk around any post-secondary or large company and see nothing but a sea of Dell, Samsung, LG etc.. monitors.

With no dual monitor 24"s or single 27"s apple literally does not have a modern desktop solution for most workplaces.

Expecting it to see announced by April 2024 with M3 chip. Hopefully Apple continues with the bright colours

Totally disagree. Not everyone likes modularity. In that case you might as well build a PC.

There are many of us that prefer the cleanliness of an all in one.

iMacs are literally just plug and play. Like MacBooks but for the desktop.

Apple is a business, a business in transition. You only have to look at their earnings, look at the TV to see more and more that Apple is really concentrating on media and even including games, which I suggest we will see more and more diversification as Apple pursues increase its customer base by that diversity.

Apple can see the hordes of governments and countries wanting to control this and that, and where media production for most post is a revenue winner without the hassle of governments wanting to tell Apple how their computers and devices should be built or run.

Yes, I'm disappointed there's no new iMac, and for those who don't think there is space for an AIO, in my opinion the AIO is so cost competitive when you take everything into consideration and so tidy for home use and education it has a place in Apple's the line up for the foreseeable future as it brings Apple experience often to new users.

Of necessity they will of course still produce new devices, and I wouldn't discount a new 24in. iMac in the next few weeks, as it seems to be the 'insiders' get fed info, true and false, just to keep Apple on the menu, as well as a surprise announcement that may seem to wrong foot the 'insiders' just for the coverage and of late on MacRumour its been just the iPhone show, which for me an old timer in computing is really boring, but that's business.

Wow. What a surprise haha.

Seriously tho, it's waaaay overdue (anyone reading this page probably feels the same), and a 24" screen seems so quaint at this point. A base iMac should be at least 27" minimum at this point IMHO.
Makes you kinda wonder if sales of the iMac were so bleak they skipped a cpu generation on purpose?

Has this ever happened in the iMac history?

I'm certainly hoping that their larger XDR panels are nearing production-readiness, it would be great to see a lineup with both standard dynamic range (SDR) and high dynamic range (HDR) displays for iMac...lotsa price points and options for varying user needs and consumer price points and for inviting new users buying-into the ecosystem. :)

I don't get the 24" size.
I'd at least provide a 27" version this time, after all they already have the panel with the studio display.
The 24" is an update on the 21.5" 4K retina iMac.
The 27" hasn't been refreshed and rebooted yet.

My guess is the issues are a combination of the supply chain issues the pandemic caused coupled with Apple slowly divesting from Chinese manufacturing to places like India and Vietnam, attempting to find out if either of them can at least match those standards.
