I can see that after installing "latebloom" it works for everyone (also for me - as a test).

However, do you work on macos 11.3+ + latebloom every day? I read the data corruption warning.
That's why I hesitate. Can you write something more after a few weeks / months?

I can lower my "Phase 1" timing quite a bit if I keep my "Phase 2" timing relatively high;
This will ensure that unless something has gone wrong in Phase 1, Phase 2 items will generally always be processed after Phase 1 items. Basically skewing a race condition (lol) in favour of Phase 1 items.

Might be that one or two interrelated items spread across the phases throw things off.

Interestingly, while I'd hoped to find that either "Phase 1" or "Phase 2" could effectively be set to 0 (meaning the entire problem was on one or the other), that's not the case - setting either one too low causes frequent failures, at least on my system.
Being able to set one or the other phase to zero would have been massive. The failure does imply some intra-phase interaction issues alongside any inter-phase ones, which is a shame.

I wonder regardless though, whether it is possible to stop Phase 2 items from starting until all Phase 1 items are processed. That is, force the processing into a synchronous mode at the phase level instead of the current (assumed) skewed asynchronous implementation?

If this is possible, it might allow dropping the Phase 2 values as well.

I'd like to add that one has to consider USB enumeration might also be part of the problem, as several others have pointed out here on the different threads.
I've seen the USB devices being enumerated at very different points in the boot log - maybe USB enumeration has to be completed before passing to another PCI bus/phase?

Did OTA Update from 11.4 to 11.5.2 on MP3,1 with OCLP 0.24 and latebloom 0.21
2 hard shutdowns needed

side note and a thing to keep an eye on it:

my nvram stream was completely full, almost no space left. Don't know the reason right now, I played a lot with bootloaders and just did the Big Sur Update. My main System is DosDude patched Mojave. Just tested my dumper with 11.5.2 on MP3,1 and was asuming a bug, but nvram was really full.

Doing a manual nvram garbage collection by 4 times nvram reset in a row cleaned it.

Expected situation is: The firmware does nvram garbage collection when little space is left, this has not happened here. It's a major thing on a 3,1 because that Firmware chip is almost not replaceable and also very hard to reprogram. On a MP4.1/5.1 it is comparatively easy and I did it more than a dozen times.

So guys, take care of your boot rom and the remaining free space. I have made and attached a tool for dumping and doing some basic checks of the MP3,1/4,1/5,1 boot rom's nvram section

After messing around with this for a few hours, I was able to successfully get it loaded. For the sake of simplicity, I've attached the original Martin LO OC config.plist with the following parameters:

Code:
latebloom=100 lb_range=20 lb_debug

This also includes the kext lines which are required and mentioned in post: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...on.2303986/page-2?post=30090448#post-30090448

This modified config file is for OpenCore 0.7.1 provided by Martin LO here.

The only thing that someone would need to do (if they wish) is either replace their config.plist contents with that of mine or overwrite the config.plist entirely.
it works great for both big Sur and Monterey! thanks! restarted 10 times without any issue at all!

If you can, please contribute to the beta by running this @Macschrauber script.
here we go, surprisingly it claims the hook did not take place!
but it is running so smooth... could be related to latest Monterey beta?

Update.
I was still using version 0.17 when I updated to Latest Monterey version. So it is probably this the reason the hook up did not take place... but then I am wondering if I am a lucky guy and my system works for 10 consecutive start up wo latebloom or it works even if the script is telling the opposite. Anyhow, now I update to version 0.19. I enclose below the result from macschrubaer script:

the hook thing is a little strange, it depends on the OpenCore Version, lb_debug set or not.

that's the reason I asked in the script if one has seen the hooks in verbose mode.

can't see a pattern, but I think it is not that relevant :)

today, after playing around with version 0.21, it crashes for the first time after roughly 20 boots... I have to admit that it is really time consuming on my system do troubleshooting because the frequency this issue occurs is very low.

You are correct that we don't know the true cause of the problem, that latebloom is a kludge, and you're not alone in your assessment that the path of least resistance may well be to sell your old Mac and get a more modern (supported) one. Depending on how Apple prices the next generation of Mac Pro, and what it has "under the hood," that option may become attractive to a lot more people.

What you seem to have missed is that while latebloom provides an admittedly kludgy way for some users to continue using the latest MacOS on their aging systems, it's also an ongoing experiment that's trying to figure out what the underlying cause is. I'm not trying to improve latebloom per se; as a tool to get recalcitrant old Macs to boot Big Sur/Monterey, it's probably about as good as it's going to get. By adding new tweaks like the most recent "Phase 1/Phase 2" separation, I'm effectively feeling around the edges of the problem, trying to find something that will provide the insight we need to create a proper solution. We'll never know the cause of the problem if we don't look for it. I've spent countless hours poring over the public source code, my disassembled kernels and kexts, and debugger traces, looking for clues to what's causing this frustrating mess; the latebloom results posted in this thread provide additional data points.

A race condition/deadlock is the most likely culprit, given the evidence we have. It's easy to think that something about the pre-2013 hardware is simply too old, but the fact is that some modern Hackintoshes exhibit the same problems, so it's not confined to some Mac-specific oddity. And in a system as complex and diverse as MacOS, finding a race condition is devilishly difficult. It's true that this problem may be insurmountable, but again - we'll never know unless we try.

I respect your position that this may well be a dead end, and that you may be better served by abandoning your old Mac in favor of a newer system. You certainly could be right on both counts. However, as @PeterHolbrook has pointed out, simply naysaying and suggesting that "this thread should be shut down" does nothing toward gathering data points or solving the problem. If you have some insight to offer on what the problem is, or how better to find it, or how to fix it, I encourage you to share your thoughts - here in this thread, or in one of your own. However, if all you're offering are arguments why this is a pointless exercise, I'd prefer that you direct your energies elsewhere. I'd like to keep this thread focused on trying to locate and solve the problem - or at least finding ways to ameliorate the symptoms.

I am very pleasee that this experiment exists and plan to keep testing current and future builds. For anything mission critical 11.2.3 runs great.

I guess the first problem is testing time. If you have a rather high boot 95% probability then, it took forever to check different parameters for troubleshooting

My 2010 iMac 11,3 27” is running much better since upgrading to 11.5.2 using OCLP 0.2.5 with the new Latebloom option over the weekend. I had one or two boot hangs using the default 100, 1, 1 settings, but since changing to 100, 20, 1 yesterday reboots have been flawless with not a single race condition boot hang. Thanks for the great work to the Latebloom dev and the OCLP team! My 2010 iMac has never run better and the graphics performance with the upgraded RX460 4GB metal GPU is back to around 1485 Valley 1920x1080 medium, which is where it was previously on Mojave. Very nice performance thanks to OCLP making the 11.5.2 upgrade possible.

This module has fixed all boot issues with Big Sur on my Mac Pro 5.1 (2P model with two Xeon X5690 CPUs). Just added it into list of kexts and it's all.
Before that I had only ~1/5 chance of successful boot, or something like that. Thank you for your work, I've almost lost all hope and thought that I'll have to install windows or perform another kind of heresy on this hardware.

Thanks, I read that. So we can continue to use 0.19 if things are working fine. I was thinking it might be useful if we get a link to that post into OP, so people know about a newer version is released. Not sure if @Syncretic finds this useful.

v21 seems to work fine, once I figured out where the executable went, thought you had released a kext update when it was just the executable within.

I ended up having to boot to my 11.2.3 installer to get up and running again, I corrupted something in the OC directory and had to copy back the original setup, then add the v21 executable. System booted without issue IMMEDIATELY. Warm boots have been an issue for me, so I'll try some more again in a day or so to see if it was really due to v21 or due to me booting into 11.2.3 before.

With Martin Lo implementation, had to change the order in config.plist ( Lilu/Whatevergreen/Latebloom as suggested by another user here ) and also changed the Latebloom values to 100-20-1 in verbose mode. Upgraded from 11.2.1 first to 11.5.2 and finally to 12.0 PB4. Just one kernel panic in 2 days, seems to be related to the USB 3.0 PCIe card installed, but seems to be working fine now. In fact, the only USB ports to be working fine ( the others works for the keyboard or wired mouse, but not for external drives or my Wacom tablet, so using the USB 3.0 card instead ). No Bluetooth, was working in 11.5.2 but not in 12.0 Public Beta 4.
