Google's approach to AI: Roll out to as many users as possible.

Apple's probable approach to AI: New Apple Pencil only works on new iPads, Old pencils will not work on new iPads for no reason effing other than greed.
True. Even when Google introduced Magic eraser, they didn't release it only for latest mobiles. It is available for everyone with a Google photos/drive subscription. I can use it even in my iPhone. If Apple is bringing AI to iOs 18, I do hope that they do release it for every iPhone with Neural Engine SoC.

What a great time to live in!

You think Apple isn’t doing the same?

I don’t care that Google knows I went for a Chinese dinner or searched for a pair of speedos.

They will still protect important data like my wallet and give me a ridiculous service full of useful AI features.

Apple will just tout privacy to scare those who don’t know any better and give us nothing but a fisher price Siri and a useless island at the top of the screen.

Apple will put a tiny language model that runs on device and tell that they do it cos they want to protect user's privacy. In return, Apple don't have to bear the cost of building and maintaining those GPU powered data centers.

Galaxy S24, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro.
That’s it.

And don’t forget about optimization, one thing Android users hate to talk about. After installing just ONE MAJOR UPDATE phone magically turns into pumpkin, starts to lag and at the end of the day owner rushes to an Apple Store to get an iPhone and never touch this Android-infested stuff again.

(Or rarely does a “second contact”, buys new Android flagship each 1-2 years)

It’s funny because Apple is so far behind these features it’s hilarious.

iOS is literally fisher price OS compared to Android with AI.

Photos search, circle to search, Gemini assistant etc are utterly amazing and nothing iOS has right now compares.

But hey, we’re getting another button!

Probably because the more users Google gets on their AI platforms. The more data they steal to sell on.

Great so now Android is not just a ripped off, bad copy of iOS but its also dumber. Gemini needs a ton of work... this is like 20 steps back.

This could the end of the iPhone …

Why?

Features like „Circle to Search“ need a deeeeeeeep integration into the OS and a search engine in the background that is again tightly coupled with the AI assistant.

Many of the shown features do exist basically in Google Lens and other Google services, so what we see are many existing Google components integrated with Gemini and Android.

Your turn, Apple. Invent or die …

Imagine this scenario in the near future:
A) user messages friend,
B) friend's smartphone AI does the reply automatically, embeds query;
C) user's smartphone AI receives the reply, automatically answers the query with another;
D) friend's AI generates another reply but CCs some work group in which both friends belong because it is all work related;
E) all the the work group's smarphones' AI auto-generate replies to everybody;
F) 10 minutes later the entire world communication system is shut down because over 5 Zeta of messages have been generated on the world's 3 billion smartphones.

Google Today: "Look at all these great AI features we are building into ANDROID!"

Google at I/O: "Look at all these great AI features that we built into Android and are exclusive to Pixel!"

Samsung at Unpacked: "Look at our flavor of what we've done with AI in Galaxy phones!"

Android phone owners: "I wonder what features I'll actually get on whatever phone I choose to buy."

If everything else fails, they can just pay Google another $20 billion.

Apple is still trying to run the company as they have always done. Total control over the employees. On the other hand Google is giving freedom so that developers can come up with new ideas. I am not saying that everything what Google does is good. But iPhone sells well because of loyal customers. Many years ago iOS was known for the simplicity and ease of use. But now Android has made many people content creators. With free Apps which come with the mobile, Anybody can edit photos and videos and upload in Social Media.
That's....a take.

How much underbaked garbage has Google put out and then killed when it starts to rot?

...far more than Apple. I was an Android user for 4 years but came back to the iPhone because the user experience is just night and day beyond what Google offers. Plus their Pixel hardware (not the features, the actual build, fit, and finish) just got worse and worse and worse generation to generation.

Sadly that's generally where this AI stuff is at right now. Underbaked. Its just a repackaging of a few impractical whiz-bang things called AI and marketed as such because its the hot tech buzzword right now.

As well as end of any tiny piece of privacy. Having your data analyzed all the time is kinda creepy. It is like having a personal policeman who lives in your house, searches your dirty clothes without any warrant and occasionally says “oh, you might need to buy a new washing machine. Your seems to be old”

"Ask This PDF" : I really really really want this feature 🤩

I hope Apple has something comparable. I think this is going to be a game changer in businesses. I can imagine it will be great for lawyers for example, because laws aren't the simplest thing to read. Same for engineering documents or work procedures.
Lawyers in particular would be very ill-advised to use this in their work.

Google's approach to AI: Roll out to as many users as possible...without testing it in conditions other than those that were planned when they developed it, just like Android 14.

My Google Pixel 6a will receive the update too early and they'll likely call my data corrupt and force me to return to Factory Settings, wiping my data, again.

Thank goodness for my iPhone.
