OLED, because I need inky blacks and infinite contrast when sitting in my man cave watching movies on my 6" screen.

/s

OLED colors pop much more than LCD (in my opinion) but on a cell phone I don't really care. Apple doesn't implement "always on display" like every Android OLED phone does, which is one of the main benefits of OLED to me. An excellent LCD (like iPhone 8) can be far superior to a crap OLED (have had several iPhone X and Androids with crappy OLED panels). I've never had any backlight bleed on any iPhone. IPS glow, sure, because the screen can't go completely black. Again, I don't sit in a pitch black room with my phone and couldn't care less about "true black."

I read alot on my phone, prior to X was a 7+

Much better reading experience on the X. Although I'm not sure if that is direct result of the oled display or the rest of the technology, i.e. to me it seems more like reading type on paper whereas the LCD had some depth to the font and seemed to tire my eyes quicker.

I think that the AMOLED display makes a ton of sense for the Apple Watch. It can basically turn off individual pixels to make it truly black (and not that grey-black-greenish from an LCD/LED display), which provides a really nice watch face appearance. But for the phone? I still can't see the real utility.

Apple has great LCD screens. I love it on my 8 Plus. At the same time, I’ve played with the current X enough to be fully on board with going OLED this year (the Plus model). The main difference to my eyes is the depth of blacks, the colors pop a little more, and even more clarity.

Now, if you are looking to compare getting the 6.1 LCD vs one of the OLED models, just be aware that current rumors point to a lower resolution for the new 6.1 than on the current 8 Plus. A larger screen with a lower resolution has some concerned, but it would be a trade off for the lower starting price point. Definitely pay attention to that part of the keynote, if it’s a concern for you.

Depends on usage. I barley even look at mine most of the time. Brightness is very important, but I can't tell the difference.

But I'm not permanently attached to the phone like it's an external body organ.

Most average Consumers have _no_ idea what the differences are between LCD and OLED, even more to the point, they probably could not even tell you the differences unless they were side-by-side comparisons. Once you see the disparity with OLED, it’s a significant difference with the colors being more rich and the blacks look more true.

As somebody who has compared them side by side I can say OLED seems brighter so I’ve seen a difference. Not convinced I need to invest more money for that difference though? If a decent LCD option is available then it’s suitable for mobile phone uses as far as I’m concerned.

It’s strange to hear Apple may put a poorer quality LCD in their latest iPhone though? Why go backwards from an 8+ when the quality level has already been reached? Surely that’s a backwards step?

I think will be interesting to see the hands-on videos with the LCD 6.1 iPhone once it debuts. I still think Apple always has used quality LCD panels, I’m not inclined to believe any differently until I can physically see the 6.1 LCD iPhone, but I do think the iPhone 8 is the best LCD panel over the years they have offered.

I prefer OLED by far. Best and deeper colors, more energy efficient, etc. I was spoiled looking at the Samsung screens for years too. I am used to having the 8+ right now and the screen works fine for me. If Apple put a FHD display on the 6.1" LCD model, I am content with it since QHD is nice and all, but highly unnecessary for me. No need for VR on my end either. But just because something is nice to have doesn't mean I need it.

I like OLED better, but if it was the only difference between the two phones - I would go with the budget model. Unfortunately there will be a lot more concessions that make the budget model, budget. The 6.5 should have a better screen, better cameras, more ram, potentially promotion/wide color, all that crap. It's going to be more than just LCD vs OLED.

I agree. It’s going to be a lot more than OLED vs LCD. The downgrades on the 6.1” are more than I expected. Especially the resolution. It will very interesting to see how the customer breakdown goes on these models.

Just how sensitive is resolution as a deciding factor to the 6.1” target customer? IMO, this will be the biggest issue. :apple:

I hope you’re right. Apple have needed a decent mid tier offering with a new form factor after last year but the rumours seem to be making this device worse by the week! lol.

I personally wouldn't worry about that. Apple has always had great LCD's and they are apparently using one of the newest types created. I'd be more worried about that than the resolution. I hadn't heard that rumor though.

For my phone, I honestly don't care. But for my iPad (where I watch a lot of TV / Movies), I'd absolutely love to have OLED. The true blacks would be fantastic.

I had 3 different X last year and they all had issues with the display tint. I also noticed a lot more eye strain. My iphone 8 is perfect in color and clarity. I just wish it was a little bigger. I was looking forward to the new LCD phone this year but the rumors are not great.

Even if you don't care about OLED's superior contrast, there are benefits:
  1. Significant battery life improvement (often double) when using apps in Dark Mode.
  2. Smaller dimension -- OLED is thinner and requires no side bezels.
  3. Better motion handling. More natural looking motion, with less blur and faster response.
  4. More uniform performance across the entire screen. No darker patches, etc.
  5. Wider viewing angle. Doesn't matter too much over small screen of course.
And as for "always on display", while iOS does not yet utilize it, things may change, perhaps even as a surprise new feature on iOS 12 and new iPhone.

Owned the Tab S4 for 10 days and it literally made my 10.5” Pro look like poop side by side at night. Ridiculous how good that panel is on the Tab S4.

I haven’t heard they are poorer quality LCDs in. What’s your source on that?

You’re calling a $700 phone (assumedly) a mid-range phone? A phone that will have the exact same internals and main camera as their top offerings isn’t mid range, imo!

I really am not able to see the difference. If anything I feel the OLED is a bit dark/dim. My preference is going to be to go for something wider than the iPhone X regardless of OLED or not. I regret having moved from the plus size to the X. My text input speed has remained slower due to the lower width of the X.

Just a choice of words as others here refer to it as ‘budget’ and it’s far from a budget phone. Ok, it’s the standard mainstream iPhone.
