Even if you don't care about OLED's superior contrast, there are benefits:
  1. Significant battery life improvement (often double) when using apps in Dark Mode.
  2. Smaller dimension -- OLED is thinner and requires no side bezels.
  3. Better motion handling. More natural looking motion, with less blur and faster response.
  4. More uniform performance across the entire screen. No darker patches, etc.
  5. Wider viewing angle. Doesn't matter too much over small screen of course.
And as for "always on display", while iOS does not yet utilize it, things may change, perhaps even as a surprise new feature on iOS 12 and new iPhone.

Agree, there can be huge benefits. Apple needs to take advantage of / optimize iOS for OLED first. With the X there was no difference compared to how LCD was treated. Case in point, True Tone. It sucks on the X compared to iPhone 8.

Motion is far worse on my Pixel 2XL and former S9 compared to iPhone 8 when black is involved. Scrolling in particular. Because the pixels turn off for black and then on, it creates blur.

Some iPhone X and Pixel 2 XL phones I tried had horrible uniformity compared to LCD iPhones.

Hopefully with the new generation some more optimization will be done for OLED.

I agree with you. It’s rather disappointing that Apple didn’t implement any benefits for the OLED. I was hoping that would’ve been done sometime in iOS 11 but never happened. Will it happen in iOS 12? Possibly, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

This explains the phenomenon I observed on demo units of X and 8. Both having the same processor, I was expecting apps to open faster on the 8 than the X. But I felt that apps opened quicker on the X. I realised that they are not opening faster, they might just be feeling faster somehow. What you said in point 3 explains what I observed, to be a characteristic of OLED. Thank you.

There is more blur on OLED. Try scrolling anything with black text or better yet, black images on light backgrounds. You'll see long trails and / or blur on OLED phones that is not present at all on the iPhone 8 and earlier LCD phones.

I'm in the very small minority of people who can't wait to see OLED die the same way plasma died. Won't get into it here.

At the moment, I have the 8 and very happy with it. Since July I have been successfully curbing the desire to upgrade my 2016 computer to 2018. Let's see what September 12 brings. Maybe I will be able to help myself to a watch and call it a day. :D

oled is instant. plasma refresh rate was what? over 600hz(marketing term). Plasmas had one of the best looking images out there. I still love my Panasonic plasma and ive had numerous 4k tv's Still is an amazing picture to me compared to 4k. Not sure why you hate on oled and plasma. They are just better than lcd. Only lcd's that can compare are full arrays. brighter picture doesn't mean better.
good video to watch

I'm talking about OLED phones having the terrible blur when it comes to black images on light backgrounds and scrolling. Not so much TVs, although I still don't like OLED TVs. I know that OLED response times are much quicker than LCD.

Different strokes for different folks. My old Panasonic plasma had the noisiest picture I've ever seen on any TV. Same for my dad's old VT30. Also had the ESPN logo burned in on the bottom of the screen. With OLED I don't like the whites and ABL annoys the heck out of me. They can't produce as good a white as LCD, in my very subjective opinion. Not to mention there is still a risk of burn in for those who watch sports or leave the TV tuned on a baseball game for hours while doing work. Sorry, I never will get behind OLED. 'Tis what makes the world go round.

OLED is like Chuck Noris vs LCD like Steven Segal. No comparison, CN will always roundkick the s*** out of SS without breaking a sweat or spilling a drop of the morning coffee.

LCD is fine, but going back to LCD after having used a OLED screen is not.

Using a low res LCD screen in 2018 is beyond really sad.

I prefer OLED. True blacks. Can save battery if using dark mode and have a black background.

Sure if you’re staring at your home screen. iOS is still virtually light colored in most every app. Only some apps offer a night mode so you’re not saving that much battery unless you like to stare at your hole screen.
