Works fine with fairly high settings on my Mac Mini @ 1680x1050. Average about 40 but drops to 30. I'm fine with anything as long as it runs more than 27fps so I'm satisfied.

the mac only started getting steam support a few months back. I think its just fine for now. they are still working on optimizing the drivers to work better with steam and such. The games run brilliantly on the same hardware under Windows. I say give it a few months so that the drivers will be mature gaming wise.

I hope your optimism is correct, but having worked day-in and day-out on Macs for over 15 years now and having been using them here and there since the eighties, Apple's history when it comes to 3D gaming in particular has left me very pessimistic about their performance. This is more than just drivers, it's OS X, which I figured 10.6 would have helped to resolve, but it didn't.

well, you seemed to set video pretty low. then you said 40-50fps? with my sony laptop F, for the same setting, I got 160fps. I usually set up video max out. I still get 55-69fps. what's wrong with macbook? is that what laptop can perform? that's pretty lame. that's why mac (probably excepting desktop) laptop is not for gaming. so people are pretty happy with that lower setting? LOL. you waste your money. better buy PC laptop which is way way better, and cheap. I guess that people are happy because they don't need to run bootcamp, right? yeah, keep dreaming.

Careful there, that is dangerously close to being a troll.

I just got the macbook white unibody with 2 gigs ram and same graphics card as yours. would i be able to run it as smooth as this. I also have 4 gigs(2gig +2gig) of ram from my old mac that i exchanged for this one, but i don't want to install that quite yet. might be unnecessary.

It's very necessary for smooth consistent performance. Put that 4gb in and you'll be good to go.

what about the controls on the macbook. i heard using the trackpad for games is very irritating. is this true or is it just personal preference.

Games like L4D are unplayable on a trackpad. You need to be doing a lot of spinning around and aiming and its not really doable without a mouse.

Compounding the issue further you need to use the Right and Middle mouse buttons for in game functions (scope, hand-to-hand attacks) .. Its really difficult to do those on Mac trackpads. Trackpad would be fine for something like Civ, not a shooter though.

wat about other games on steam. amnesia, penumbra, or half life 2. how are those on the trackpad.

Great vid, aznguyen! Runs great!!

I have to tell say how pleased I am with how well this new 320m is running games for us. I have had my new mbp for a couple weeks now, and am so happy that I don't have to use windows to play tf2, l4d, etc.... :D

Now, I just need to get a good mouse to use. Any suggestions guys?

In terms of gaming mice, I must recommend Razer products. Many of their major mouses have mac native drivers that are customizable to each button. I love the Razer DeathAdder, my favorite mouse and also own a Razer Orochi which can be wireless via bluetooth. Both have Native OSX drivers + 2 year warranty is great.

Very cool video aznguyen316! Is this mac what you do all of your computer gaming on?

I like smaller mice usually and use wireless Logitech laser mice - The VX Nano in particular is lovely.

thanks for the suggestions.....

I've had several logitech mice in the past, and they have been pretty decent for sure.

Although, I am really liking the orochi. That looks like a great gaming mouse! I think I am going to give it a chance.

Bought my MacBook too early, I guess

I have a late 2007 white MacBook. Am stunned at the improvements in gaming performance on the newer ones. Mine can just about play games like the original Splinter Cell and Civilisation 4, but Left 4 Dead? GTA IV? COD 4? Dream on, lol. It can't even do MineCraft. Bought my MacBook a little bit too early, I guess

Back in 2006-2008 Apple used crappy Intel intergrated graphics.

How bad? The PowerBook G4 12"s GeForce Go 5200, which was weak in 2004 and completely outdated in 2005. Scores better in tests than the early MacBooks

You don't need to tell me :) Back then though, I didn't really think I'd ever use a Mac to play games; Boot Camp was still in beta, I think. --> Graphics on MacBooks and the arrival of Steam has really shaken things up a bit though!

i AGREE to :] L4D2 works so WONDERFULLY on the MPB.

Mine is 15in 2.53ghz though, but same thing. I hardly get any FPS drops unlike Sc2 ;x

yeah the source engine seems to be working very well with openGL. I do wish SC2 would run as smooth as the PC counterpart. I'm not even asking for same FPS, but it just doesn't feel as good, mouse response, screen scrolling, etc, game is just not polished on Mac as it feels on PC. L4D2 I don't feel any of those differences except it's slightly lower FPS than boot camp.

what game would u guys suggest i buy off steam that would least likely require a mouse. reason being i have 4-6 hour breaks between my classes and im in diff places and packing the mouse everywhere would be kind of irritating. im going to buy a mouse soon anyway but what game would you suggest minus the mouse?

A non action game. Something where you don't have to move a cursor around the screen quickly. Try a turn based strategy game or something similar maybe? And then buy a mouse :D
