In motion I don't notice them, besides AA really kills performance. I'd rather up the texture quality/effects than AA :)

If it's going too slow for anyone there's a line you can add in the console to turn off the HDR effect.

I'm running with 2xAA, all settings high except shaders set to medium. 1280x800 resolution. 45 - 70 fps on my early 08 MBP.

I've got it on bootcamp on my Black Macbook, but having trouble tweaking the settings. It runs, but the framerate drops quickly when the zombies pour in.

Standard hardware, 2.4 ghz, 667 Mhz, 2GB ram. Team fortress runs ok, but I'm wondering if a upgrade to 3-4gig is what I need to get my gaming up, or what settings should I use to increase the frame rate?

Tried it on the MB (9400m) for the first time today and I'm loving how capable this card is. Bioshock, Fallout 3, L4D, all running at mid-max settings (no AA or Vsync though) at native resolution and they fly. Should tide me over till I build a dedicated gaming machine.

I'm really not sure what the normal temperature should be but I'm at 111 Degrees Fahrenheit right now. It seems to be fine.
With high-graphics games, that usually feels what I'm at. ...though, ith would be nice if there was a slightly larger heat sink over the processor.
That's a beautiful setup. I needa set something like that up. Cheers! ;)

My 4 year old windows PC I was using to run TF2 and L4D conked out earlier today. Was thinking about replacing it with a new Macbook Pro 15" and using Bootcamp to install Steam.

I was wondering if anyone knows how the new MBPs run games (particularly TF2/L4D). My main concern is whether or not there are any issues with the dual video card system the new MBP uses.

Also, is it worth doing at all if I can't find a copy of WinXP? Does Vista run decently?

Another issue is whether or not you can transfer your Steam ID to another computer and have your achievements/tf2 unlockables intact.

Thanks

It'll run them exactly the same as a Windows machine with equivalent specs. In other words, very well. There will be no issues, under Windows only the 9600M is used.

It will be fine under Vista.

As I understand it, your achievements are not locked to your computer, they're locked to your account. So it doesn't matter what computer you use, only what ID.

Unless you max out your MBP I'd stick with XP for gaming performance reasons.

umm

I have a uni body new 2G mac book and i used boot camp and separated the hard drive with 31 GB on the widows side and left 4 dead worked fine so if you want it get ithttp://images.macrumors.com/vb/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I was playing Death Toll with 3 of my friends last night. While standing on the broken bridge near the beginning, I got hurled on by a little tiny boomer from about 2 stories bellow. :)

I've been vomited on plenty of times, but I had no idea they could do so from so far away.

MBP works great with TF2, and L4D.

Achievement are associated with account. On new computer you sign in to your account.

There is a way to transfer games that you bouoght (by transferring all game data), or you can redownload them again.

Your custom sprays will not transfer unless you transfer the relevent game data.

Yea everything is stored online on Valves servers. It's all very portable too. Just copy the whole Steam folder anywhere and (after Steam does a minor update) it'll be back to normal.

help!

So I am about to purchase L4D for my early '08 MBP, but what else do I need? I was thinking of using my 42" plasma as an external screen, but do I need to get anything else?

I have the Xbox 360-version of Left 4 Dead. I must say it's the first Valve game that really disappointed me. Extremely repetitive, limited, rather boring gameplay and not enough atmosphere. I can forgive the lack of a story line, but then at least there should be more levels, preferably randomly generated (you know, like an FPS-version of Diablo).

Anyway. It doesn't surprise me that it runs nicely on a MacBook or MacBook Pro. Valve's (rather old) game engine is not very demanding. If you want a real hardware benchmark, try Crysis or any Unreal 3-engine-based game at full resolution and maximum details.

Valve has plans to support the game with extra content that was supposedly delayed due to the Christmas season. Don't know where it is right now though.

Have you tried versus instead of just campaign? Vs. is where it's at, really.

Eh! The Source engine has gone through 14 major versions since it showed up. It's not old at all and supports all modern technologies.
As I always say; it's just that Valve don't throw bloom and bulbous armour clad grunts in every direction.
The Source engine is by far the most optimised available engine currently going.

I've been faithfully waiting for the DLC for over a month now. I can't honestly tell people that it's just around the corner anymore...even though Christmas seems like a long time ago.
