I didnt have to make up an excuse, I told them that i need to exchange my unlocked iphone 5 for a refurbished one because my iphone doesnt have access to T-Mobiles AWS network and the new ones do. His response was.... "OK"

Got the "new" phone and i couldnt be happier.

The thing is you bought the phone unlocked. I bought it from AT&T locked (unlocked through swiftunlocks). So I'm in a tougher situation.

Wont hurt trying, i didnt have to use my applecare+. When i told him i had it his response was "that wont be necessary, i will run it through normal applecare"

Will try it in a week or so, I just got my Two AT&T models replaced today and couldnt be happier!

Technically i paid full price for the ATT version since the "Unlocked" one wasnt released yet. When you pay full price for the ATT one it comes "Unlocked" so there really is no difference. So when he asked if i bought it unlocked i just said yes because it was unlocked when it was purchased.

Are the phones that you got replaced unlocked as well since they have AWS. I assume they were unlocked before.

They were AT&T and IMEI unlocked via 3rd party. Now they are also unlocked, however they did ask if I'm still using AT&T...I said no I'm on simple mobile and Tmobile.

Great! Glad to hear that ATT IMEI unlock via 3rd party and it still unlocked for replacements.

I'm gonna try to swap my phone hopefully if jailbreaking comes out soon, I rely heavily on some of the tweaks and since both our replacements came with 6.1.3 I kinda don't want to give up my tweaks lol.

I'm curious… do these replacement phones have 6.1.3? My iPhone is in pretty bad shape; the only reason I'm holding off on a replacement is because mine is jailbroken.

Ya...we got two today and both were 6.1.3....some people about a week ago were reporting 6.1.2

Mine and my brothers replacements were on 6.1.3

Just got two AT&T iPhones replaced and they both start with NE, I'm going to get them unlocked and report back after doing proper testing althought being in strong T-Mobile 1900MHz coverage area it's going to be difficult

What was the exchange process like and did you have to make an appointment at the genius bar?

They actually no longer have the old ones. So all the replacement unlocked phones will work with tmobile. Find a different genius that one seems to not know what he is talking about. Ask for a replacement unlocked version and check the serial on the box to see if it ends with one of these

Why would one buy an unlocked phone from Apple for 649 when T-Mobile is selling them for 579?

because T-Mobile iPhone is not unlocked and nor will they unlock it unless you have a active post paid account for 60 days or more....thats why...and some people reported having to pay $50 for the first month in order to get it...so if thats true that is already $630...

Also I'm selling my T-Mobile AWS Compatible iPhone 5 16GB, I just got it replaced yesterday check thread for more info: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1573412/

For some reason the link doesn't work for me. :(

Because i bought mine in november unlocked which was months before tmobile started selling theirs

I feel people are soo caught up with the $579 that they dont even bother looking at what comes after those digits...

Here are some highlights that people need to keep in mind regarding the $579 price as one may face going this route...
(1) iPhone will come locked to T-Mobile and SOME members have reported being told that they need to have account active with iPhone on it for 60+days
(2) Some members have reported the need to have $50 post paid plan...now your up to $629+Tax...
(3) Some members have reported that T-Mobile requires a $50 fee to unlock the iPhone...again your up $629....<- I am kind of seeing this happening because T-Mobile is pretty much subsidizing the iPhone down to $579 so they need to make their money back if you are going to switch to a "Prepaid" or MVNO's option as they say Carriers dont make much money on Prepaid plans

I had bought mine in December, just when they released the official unlocked version. Did you setup a genius bar appointment with the store when you exchanged it? I'm still skeptical that this would work, though I do think I can say I'm getting poor signal in certain areas would warrant some type of valid excuse.

That simply isn't true. Perhaps they talked to a misinformed T-Mobile rep, but there is no fee for unlocking your iPhone on T-Mobile.

It's something I read in the first few days on Tmobile iPhone 5 launch on the forum here. Have you gotten your iphone 5 from Tmobile, unlocked? Please share what you did (did you buy on plan or outright), how did you get your unlock(what one should know to get it done), were you required to get plan when purchasing if paid in full?
