Guys,
Please post the summary of what needs to be checked (serial#, factory date) to make sure the iPhone is capable of t mo AWS WCDMA.

This will be helpful for folks who are swapping an old unlocked iPhone for any reason.

It's something I read in the first few days on Tmobile iPhone 5 launch on the forum here. Have you gotten your iphone 5 from Tmobile, unlocked? Please share what you did (did you buy on plan or outright), how did you get your unlock(what one should know to get it done), were you required to get plan when purchasing if paid in full?

Here is the official unlock guidelines: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1588

For USA iPhone owners Just need to have model # Starting with ME or NE and Serial ending in the 4 combo's we have mentioned in original post.

As for Canadians as that is the only other place the A1428 model is sold...we havent had any input from people...

I wish you answered my question because anyone can find that link and talk about it....thats not personal experience we can share with people....iPhone just launched and has different requirements than any other smartphone...

In Canada Rogers, Fido, Telus and Bell will unlock any phone of theirs without being so demanding on requirements but same cant be said for iPhone....

The link I posted is the brand new requirements that were posted with the iPhone launch.

Lets see I'm hoping someone will share their experience...I know for a good portion of owners it will be hard to get the iPhone unlocked immediately because T-Mobile still requires you to have an active account for 60 or 90+days...

I got an iPhone replacement at my local apple store with the model number NE491LL/A 64GB white AT&T iPhone 5.... I got my preivious model unofficially unlocked through a third party b4 it became illegal in the states... Every time I used to restore that old iPhone 5, it would give me the "congratulations your iPhone has been unlocked" screen... Once I got this new replacement, it stopped giving me the congrats screen when I restored... But I popped a T-Mobile SIM card in it and it would connect and place calls on T-Mobiles network...

I'm wondering if they gave me a factory unlocked model and if so would it not show the "congrats your iPhone is unlocked" screen when I restore?

nice! I am soon going to get my 32GB replaced hopefully they help me out. I'm starting think all GSN A1428 models are now being replaced by tweaked A1428 models as Apple is probably able to unlock the 1700 band in their factory where they refurbish the units.

I bought the unlocked AT&T version in November. I did not buy Apple Care+. Do you think I too get my phone exchanged for the T-mobile version?

It's entirely possible, go and give it a try! Let me
Know how it goes because my 32GB is perfect but I want to get the tweaked one if I can. I'm sure if you talk nice enough they will help you out.

Folks who got their iPhone replaced amd using on T-Mobile, please update your thread with model numbers and field test mode results.

It will help a lot to people who want to do the same.

Satnam1989,
Quick questions:
1. Is it an *and* or an *or* condition between (Model Numbers ME or NE) (Serial Numbers ending with the last for ending with the below numbers)?
FH19
FH1C
FH1D
FH1F
FH1G
FH1H

2. You mentioned in another post that Apple is sending back 8 Million iphones to factory and that your take was exactly the reason of this thread (iPhone firmware update for Tmo AWS). If this is the case, the serial numbers may not change.

1) so far within USA if you want AWS enabled iPhone make sure it's model number begins with ME (Original) or NE (a device you will receive as replacement should you get your iPhone 5 replaced) and just make sure that long serial number ends with the last 4 digit combos above.

2) I have reason to believe apple is sending back units to enable AWS 1700 band, I just got two of my AT&T iPhones replaced and they both came back as A1428 AWS enabled models.....if apple wasn't sending units back to enable 1700 band then we wouldn't be getting the models with AWS...instead be getting the older A1428, also I had to wait 2-3 days for the iPhones as they had none in stock.

Forgot to add: I went to two separate apple stores on a Thursday and Friday, both were out of stock on black and white A1428 models, as we all know apple simply locks the A1428 model to the carrier it is being given out as a replacement for, so it's not like they needed AT&T special iPhones....and my iPhones were both unlocked already...but apple had no refurb units on hand they could give me.

I got a replacement and it's the TMobile version but it's running 6.1.3 so I'm torn. Problem is my power button doesn't work at all so I took this. Hate that I don't have the jailbreak. Stock iOS 6 is awful.

Sorry to hear that you got the one where there is no jailbreak (yet) but I am glad you got a replacement that works on T mobile.

Can you post your serial number's last four digits? Do they match with above mentioned numbers?

Thanks

It's FH1C and model #ME487/LL. 16GB AT&T White. I guess it will help my resale value. Plus the body is perfect. First iPhone 5 I've seen with no defects. I never realized how much I miss the jailbreak though. I only use NC Settings, 5 icon dock, Bitesms, and location spoofer.

Had a T-Mobile service phone of 661-7427, 64GB White.

The last 4 serial number is FH1C

iOS 6.1.2

Does the Apple store that you got your replacement phone from only has the T-Mobile branded phones in stock? If so, that's great! BTW, how is your replacement phone working out in general?

I got it in the mail from Apple.com. Ordered the replacement last Thuraday. Phone seems fine. Power button works ha. Just wish it had 6.1.2.

Thanks for the info. Did you buy it unlocked? Was it before T mo launch date when you bought the faulty phone?
I am in a similar situation. The phone that I bought was unlocked in december 2012. My phone had lock key issues and when I went to apple store last week, they were replacing with a non tmo version. I rejected it and told them that I will try after some time with a hope that they run out non tmo version phones. Looks like that is happening faster that I anticipated.

I bought it unlocked. This was a replacement for a replacement. I'm guessing Apple is using these as of last Thursday.

Thanks for the quick reply! So the power button is so-so? Have you contacted Apple support about this?

I bought the unlocked iPhone 5 when it came out in December from Apple and had problems with it almost from the beginning. It's good to know that Apple's online store is now replacing the phones with the T-mobile version, at least that is what it appears to be.

The power button is fine. My old phone's power button was flaky.
