Even my 2006 Mac Pro is still a beast and perfectly capable of doing any video/photo/etc work that a professional would need.

While the older machines are still quite capable, I disagree. What kind of "professional" work are you talking about? Current hardware would give my workflow a tremendous boost over something several years old.

All computers are perfectly capable of doing Video/photo/music at a professional level. Just make sure you get paid. Bam! You're pro. I can write a book on G3 Pismo and get it published for example.

I have always been a tower person. I just can't stand the thought of not being able to easily insert or remove multiple hard drives.. add PCI cards, video cards, etc. And Apple's towers have always stayed in the game way longer than their all-in-one and laptop counterparts. For example, my 3.0GHz Mac Pro 1,1 has a geekbench score around 6500, still on par with the weakest machines currently being sold in 2012! An iMac or laptop from the same time period as my tower is not even in the same ballpark, with geekbench scores in the 2000s.

In any case, as my trusty machine has finally been pushed over the edge (by lack of Mountain Lion support) I am beginning to save up money to purchase the all-new 2013 Mac Pro. I expect to spend $4,000 - $6,000 on a full new setup with a new display and everything.

Anybody else definitely buying the new tower when it comes out, and already putting money away for it? :)

Sorry, I just can't get excited about scanning the Mac sites and relishing each silly Mac Pro rumor or fanboy wishlist. If Apple continues the Mac Pro line that would be really great. If not, whatever. There's more to life than spending time fantasizing over the next Mac or iPhone. When it's time to replace my MP 5,1 I'll look around a make a decision.

New "Pro"

I think is't going to be BIG. A new name too. Also with fibre TB that they have been working on for some time. G3, G4, G5 Pro.........New box too. And maybe January.

I agree. It's time for a new case design. And I have a feeling that they'll put cutting-edge hardware in it, rather than their typical one-year-old hardware.

+1.

The 2006 Pro has been obsolete for 4 years. We trashed ours in 2009 or so.

My Mac Pro 2006 2,1 3ghz running ML has a geek bench of around 11000.

Really low ram score but hey ho not bad for a 7 yr old mac. Still plays battlefield 3 on nice graphics.

I will save my energy and excitement for things I KNOW to be on the horizon. I am tired of speculating and hoping like a child that something I need for work will be delivered by the almighty Apple. I too believe the Mac Pro will be replaced for another option. Who the hell knows what or when that will be though. Nowhere in "we're working on something really great for later next year" does it say they will be keeping the name Mac Pro.

I have been sitting on about $5000 to upgrade my system this year however by the looks of it, not gonna happen. A sizable portion of what would have made it's way into Apple's hands is now going to be spent on a cintiq 24in HD . I need the tax write off this year.

I know the desktop isn't a seller like the iPhone or iPad, but the way they have been neglected is unreal. I know it's bating a dead horse, but I am sincerely curious as to how Mr. Jobs would have felt about all this.

I'm cutting RED on my 2006, like a champ. I just render and transcode overnight.

What's frustrating is that we all have/had our hard earned money saved up with our hopes pinned on an update.

Some people $3000, others willing to spend up to $10,000 for a machine. Now I have personally taken my $8000 and had a hack built. I would have spent even more on a genuine Apple machine.

Now just from Apple's obvious lack of motivation towards the Mac Pro line, am I wrong to assume that all of this has little impact on Apple?

Unfortunately I know there are still people and companies out there who will buy the current machines no matter what. These are companies that must have equipment purchased through certain suppliers, with guaranteed warranties etc. I'm guessing these are the sales that keep Apple going. This year one place I work for have bought 2 x top of the line 12 core machines, 3 x top of the line iMacs and we have a few more Mac pros coming in the next quarter as well. There's another guy who just posted a thread about buying 14 brand new mac pros. The way some of these organisations work, the sales would still happen today even if a guaranteed update was coming tomorrow.

My question is have Apple become truly complacent with their success, knowing they will still manage to sell to an apparently captive market?

Would be interesting to know the percentage of mac pro sales from single/private users or enthusiasts compared to larger companies gobbling up whatever is on offer.

Frustrated

I'm in a really tough spot. I'm in need of getting more work stations right now for video / 3d animation work. Currently on a decent 12 core from 2010. Great machine. But not powerful enough. However, there's no way I would put the amount of money into a fully specced current MP. For the same amount, I can get some seriously packed HP Z820. However, I really don't want to venture back into Windows.

However, I'm getting very close to make the switch.

I've decided to hold on until early 2013 to see what the next MP will be like (if any). If it's a disappointment, the only thing that makes sense is to go HP. But I can't wait too long.

But I really prefer OSX, but current top specced Mac Pro's just ain't powerful enough for my work.

So frustrating. I know that if I switch, then I'm sure Apple will release something great which will make me regret.

Wow. You are very patient.

It's actually not bad. After my quad upgrade I can do 1/8th res realtime in Redcine X and Premiere. For the little projects I transcode to prores for offline first anyway. I still work faster in FCP.

Still using my 2008 Mac Pro. Like Apple, love the Mac Pro, love OSX, love the aluminum tower.

But "excited"? Big-ass no. Apple hardware is getting outrunned and outgunned by the latest PC offerings, especially the new Intel chips. Video cards? Forget about it, Mac Pro laughably destroyed by the latest GPUs from ATI and NVIDIA, none of which we can use (or at least not easily). Hell, Apple is still selling old video cards for hundreds of dollars over list, complete scam and ripoff.

Getting ready to make the move to the next iMac release for my "office" type work and personal stuff, and a homebuilt PC for serious computing work. Makes me very sad, but I've seen firsthand how PC motherboards, BIOS software, cases, fans, and chips are now very robust for the do-it-yourselfer. Buy some parts, get some mini screwdrivers, and you can save thousands while building a beast machine that will grenade Mac Pro at this point. I know this because I did it two months ago.

Same thing in the world of Macs unfortunately.

Not sure how that is remotely possible as a 3.2GHz 2008 8-core 5400 series doesn't break 10,000. Nor does the 2009 3.33GHz Quad Nahalem with HT for 8 threads. But hey this is the internets. It is what you claim it is. ;)
Geekbench can't be made faster by anything other than memory and processors as it tests "memory and processors".

Waiting since 2008

My last Desktop was a 2008 loaded. Since then I went in three times after each new release, and am NOT seeing huge speed boosts over what I have. Enough to spend 5-8K on a new loaded machine.

Nothing but promises since 2008.

So, I will keep adding faster video cards, faster hard drives, more memory, etc. and wait, and wait, and wait, and wait, and wait.

If Apple doesn't want to build a MAC DADDY machine, then they can't have my money. It's that simple. At this point I would have at least bought two machines since 2008.

That's OK, I just spent the money I saved on a new Nikon D4, so I can thank Apple for that one.

Here are my results, Im not going to lie, I don't understand all the details that are shown but wanted to show you actual numbers run on my machine.

Geekbench Score 11694 - My machine is 3 GH but when I run it with Chameleon running 10.8 it turns to 2.99.

I do have SSD hard drive, 12 MB Ram and a 5870 Video card if that makes any difference?

OK run it in 32bit? Just curious if there was an obscene 64-bit boosting. Hard to swallow that a 2007 Mac with 1st gen Quad chips beats everything released from 2008-2009, the current i7 3.4GHz iMac and ALL the Macbook pro's to this point. The SSD, Memory, and GPU would make little to no difference.
