replacement screen

i thought id comment on this thread.

i took my phone to my local apple store yesterday as i had marks underneath my screen which appeared to be the screen lifting from the backing. So the man at the genious bar swopped my screen whilst i waited.

Now, i have a 3G from the first weeks of them being released and i can clearly see a much warmer screen compared to the screen before.

Im alittle annoyed now that i got it swopped and i now have a new screen but i suppose id be more anoyed if i had just bought a 3GS. I went back today to ask if they had any thoughts on this and a chap told me he couldnt see the problem.

But im not going to stress about it, but it is annoying and can sympathize with all the new 3GS owners

I have 2 week 27 32 black 3GS on hold at Best Buy for tomorrow. I took my brother up to swap his out because of the bad battery and the lady said she could not do it because AT&T support was closed. Anyways, we go back tomorrow.

Both of ours are week 25 phones. Both have the warmer screen. His has a battery issue so it will be replaced either way. Mine on the other hand seems to be fine except for the warmer screen.

Question is - should I even risk swapping the phone?

My 3G phone's screen was a lot "cooler" than my current 3GS and for a while it bothered me. Ever since I sold my 3G, I haven't worried about the color at all.

back from ban, here's where i am at now

* week 26 phone, got display replaced at Genius Bar, beautiful display
* make a call, realize Genius broke proximity sensor
* use ARS (waived fee) to get new week 27 iPhone
* new iPhone has yellow gradient issue
* drive 2.5 hours to Apple Store, get screen replaced
* worst screen I've ever seen on iPhone, they're out of replacements. Genius was stunned at how bad this looked next to hers. getting a new screen next Sunday, since she had to order one.

SIGH

I've now had two screen replacements at a genius bar. Problem is, I don't believe they replaced the screen either time!!! Last time there was a lot of whispering going on between the manager to the genius who was seeing to me, and he looked a bit sheepish when he handed it back to me. I really wish I could prove it because I don't like being treated like an idiot, and considering all the paper work that gets completed I guess it must actually be fraudulent!

I'm getting a brand new boxed phone from o2 when back in stock. I'm hoping that when new stock arrives this issue will have been resolved.

week 27s have bad screens too.

my genius showed others and in each scenario 2-3 Geniuses agreed I should get a replacement.

I'll go down the replacement route again if the new phone is no good. I told the guys at the Apple store that I wasn't happy after the second replacement. They had 'replaced' the screen without hesitation, but there was definitely something funny going on. I'm almost past caring... but not quite!:D

EDIT: I'm not usually paranoid!!

1. Does your phone have a yellow tint?

Yes

2. When was your phone shipped and from where?

Bought at Walmart

3. What model/color 3GS did you order?

32GB White

4. When was it made? (check the third-fifth #'s of your serial number)

Week 25

My head hurts from all the yellowness!

Before I rest these thoughts for another night, I'll just say that I wouldn't mind if my local Apple store and o2 store weren't full of nice bright non-yellow iphones..... Agr!

Remember, people, that these whiners are a MINUTE fraction of the MILLIONS of happy 3G/3GS owners... so take it with a pinch of salt, and don't get too OCD about your screens :).

If you compared ten TVs side by side, you'd end up becoming paranoid; the human brain adjusts to colour shift, and you'll soon forget about the "yellow" screen. What are you gonna do - use the iPhone, or sit around obsessing over its "flaws" and get all grumpy?. Sheesh, if it is THAT bad, go back and exchange it, but if not, then give us a break please.

first iphone

I just think about when the first iphone, the 2g had one of its first major SW updates and the original 3g, it had a much softer, more yellow gamma and everyone freaked out. Then, in a few weeks an update was released and it took it back to the more blue/white screen.

So, ALL this could be just a software issue, and apple could update it.

Why do people think software solves everything?. Broken your leg? wait for a software update. Run out of coffee? a patch will fix that too. I wonder if half you people can imagine anything that ISN'T fixed with a software update?!. If a screen is cracked, can I fix that with an update also?.

We live in a PHYSICAL world, and software isn't a physical thing - you can't fix the world's problems by pressing buttons.

I agree with you 100%.

However, I don't think my eyes can adjust to blue-to-yellow gradient down the screen. That's the reason why I complained. People complaining about even yellow across the screen are the ones that are crazy. Warm is better... just not when it's only on the bottom.

I apologize in advance if what I am about to say causes you any offence but you are an idiot.

So don't reply to me, as that would make you equally an idiot. Oh and your faux apology is the most pretentious thing I've heard in a long time - what kind of crazy person are you?.

I am a crazy person who knows that display calibration is perfectly possible with software.

PS. It wasn't a faux apology!

If you want a break, then stop reading this thread! Don't ask people to stop talking about something because it irritates you. There's plenty of room on the forum for this discussion.

My 3GS has a slight tint toward the bottom. It's difficult to show it to the geniuses because of the lighting in the Apple Store. Even for myself, it's usually not noticeable, but I notice it at night. Not too bothersome, for now, but hopefully a fix comes soon. I don't think Apple will announce a recall at all, since majority of iphone owners are ok. It's quite irritating (and a mental note for the future) that Apple's secrecy with products means the early adopters are the beta testers. Next time, wait at least a quarter before jumping in so the kinks are somewhat worked out.

Meanwhile, I got this link from the Apple forums to find the factory where your iphone was put together in China using the serial number. No need to post the serial number, but the rest on the info may help narrow down the culprit factory.

Colour: White
Capacity: 32GB
Factory: 88 (Shenzhen, China)
Model introduced: 2009
Production year: 2009
Production week: 25 (June)

Yellow gradient on the bottom of my screen:

Model: MB717 iPhone 3GS
Colour: Black
Capacity: 32GB
Factory: 86 (China)
Production year: 2009
Production week: 25 (June)
Production number: 12981 (within this week)

I just got a week 27 white 32GB iPhone with a yellow screen. Should I get it replaced? I'm afraid that if I do, I'm gonna get another yellow screen. Does anyone have a week 27 phone without any yellow?

Wait, the first 2 digits are the factory number? We should've been comparing those all along.

Factory 87 (China), warm but probably perfect screen. Week 21.

I'm so sick of this line. We all pay very good hard-earned cash for our phones and expect in return a premium, quality product. Clearly, a lot of us here share the same sentiment that Apple hasn't offered us that with our 3GS'. All the screens I've seen on display at AT&T/Apple stores are flawed to some degree. That shouldn't be the acceptable standard now, should it?

Coming from a iphone 3G, I immediately noticed that the iphone 3G S had a warmer screen. It no longer bothers me as I have gotten use to it very fast.
