This is weird....

Although I selected 4096 x 2160 on the Display, however the Graphic Displays in System Information shows otherwise.... 3008x1586

Although the 4096x2160 has more space compared to 3008x1586

SORRY my bad... I did not close the System Information after I change my resolution. So it really appears that it is showing the correct refresh rate. AND if you check the 'Show low resolution modes' the refresh rate drop drop down option is shown.

Displays:
LG 31MU97 SRX:
Resolution: 4096 x 2160 @ 60 Hz
Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Rotation: Supported
Connection Type: DisplayPort
Television: Yes

Thats really good to hear, how is 50 hz to work with?

I was previously using a Dell 3007WFP 2560x1600 @ 60Hz.

I can imagine that those using Mac Pros might be able to detect the difference, but given that the Late 2013 rMBP is a little underpowered GPU-wise, I'll always notice the GPU lag when dragging windows/playing games/watching videos more than any 50Hz lag.

Worst case, you can still use it at 60Hz as long as you use one of the 16:9 resolutions.

Since I'll probably have this monitor for 5-7 years, I'm pretty happy with the 50Hz until there is either an OSX update or if I get a new Mac in a few years.

And now I see how you look that up under the System Report: I'm at 50Hz. It's not killing me. Hope to get 60Hz at some point, but I'm not going insane in the mean time.

The file is not working out for me, nothing's changed... Even though I removed the ".text " extension and rebooted, it's still showing as a text format in the folder:
/System/Library/Displays/Overrides/DisplayVendorID-1e6d/DisplayProductID-76e7
Under displays and scaled i only get the "larger text-----more space", pressing the option key does nothing for me... any help ?
Should SwitchResX be installed before for it to work ?

Are there any existing file on that folder for you? You can copy one of them and edit and replace the content from the text file, then rename the file after.

Yes, there are 2 other files in that folder, should I delete them ? I'm worried it might cause problems, or is that the way it should be done ?

No don't delete them... leave them there.. just copy of the file and rename it to 'DisplayProductID-76e7' then edit the content and replace it with the one from the text file.

Also, click the 'option' key first before clicking the scaled radio button. let me know what if it did change anything...

Yes, thank you ! It's now working, i had to uncheck Add Text suffix or something similar while saving it.
Ratio is now in 17:9, but as others have reported, it's limited to 50hz..

Also a BIG thank you to the creators of SwitchResX, without them this wouldn't have been possible...

Display driver bug or 2x panels?

I've noticed that when I scroll, one half of the screen sometimes scrolls at a different rate than the other half.

I've attached a photo I took of the screen while scrolling. Anyone else seeing this on their LG?

When I switched the screen off and on the issue completely disappeared, so it's not a huge problem.

Maybe this is because the screen is actually 2x panels stitched together, and the firmware in the monitor that is separating the SST stream into a stream per panel is a little bit buggy?

Or maybe it's a buggy GT 750M GPU driver?

What you experienced didn't happen to me, did you notice it only once ?

It happened once on Friday, and once again yesterday. Each time I noticed it, I simply unplugged and replugged the displayport cable and the split scroll problem disappeared.

Can you tell me how it looks at 50hz? Any noticeable lag? Also curious how small everything appears at this resolution - if you're keeping it at this res, how close do you need to be so everything seems an acceptable size?

Thanks - I'm on the fence about ordering one, similar setup to yours...

I'm happy with it at 50Hz. Since I am able to make 60Hz work in 3840x2160 resolution, I tried video and tried dragging windows about at 50Hz and 60Hz on this monitor and can't perceive any difference.

You'd be crazy to use it at the raw resolution, I use HiDPI 2560x1350 and that's just right.

Even with these small issues, I'm much happier with this monitor than my old 30" 2560x1600 one.

The competing Samsung UD970 is 60% more expensive, so I feel like this is a bargain monitor. Even if they were the same price, I'd probably still prefer this one given some issues people are having with anti-reflective coating "graininess" on the UD970.

It actually looks fine at 50hz, maybe 60hz is just a tiny bit smoother while scrolling vertically but you'd have to have them both next to each other to notice the difference. If you use your monitor for gaming, then you'd maybe notice it more.

For safari and Photoshop, my main use for this monitor it's a non-issue to be honest. At least i get to use the monitor in full screen without having the black bars on the left and right side of the screen, which were very annoying before..

Using it full resolution makes it unusable to be honest, everything looks so tiny and my eyes begin to hurt after a short while because I have to squint to be able to read anything. "Best for display" chooses 2048 x 1080 by default and everything looks crisp and sharp, the scaling is excellent. A good compromise could be 2560 x 1350...

This all sounds very encouraging, I'm interested in how the scaling/retina side of things looks. Does it basically use the higher resolution as a base but scale up menus and windows etc to a more readable size?

Any chance of a screen grab at a couple of resolutions?

Thanks!

Sounds like you are new to the concept of HiDPI.

If you're not currently using a retina screen, then the screenshots are going to be useless in explaining anything. E.g. take a look at this http://images.anandtech.com/galleries/2078/Screen Shot 2012-06-11 at 4.35.46 PM.png

What you should do is go over to the Apple store and play with the new retina iMac or with a retina MBP, and try switching to the different HiDPI modes in the display preferences. This will show you what things look like when you're not in the raw resolution.

Sorry I probably didn't phrase the question very well, I understand the Retina concept what I mean is that whilst I appreciate that the native 4096 resolution may make things too small to be comfortable part of my reason for going 4k is to get more screen real estate so would be interested as to how much more can be practically fitted on the screen than my current 2560 x1600 30in Cinema display.

IE how does the screen layout look ( how much can you fit on) at the HiDPI 2560 x 1350?

If that makes sense!

I just would want to make sure I can use it without *any* scaling. Is anyone currently doing that?

Pretend your current non-retina monitor had the dimensions 2560x1350. That's how much you'll be able to fit on the screen when you use HiDPI mode on the LG screen.

The only difference on the LG screen will be that the text will look clearer since the actual raw resolution of the LG screen is much better than 2560x1350.

Great to see real 4K and not UHD. After reading through posts of issues trying to get 60hz, Apple's 5K implementation is even more impressive.

Yes, I just saw the 5K iMac in the store, and that screen is might beautiful.

And it's a perfect 4x scaling of 2550x1440, which I am sure makes it look so good as well.

I just hope my 6-month old nMP with dual D700's will be able to support whatever is coming...

Unfortunately thunderbolt 2 doesn't have enough bandwidth for 5K. You can drive multiple 4K displays though.
