JFC! FFS! WTMFF??

I’m now definitely NOT going to buy a used 2013 Mac Pro. I didn’t buy one when they came out because I was waiting for Apple to make a retina display for it. They never did, so I never bought. I wonder how many other people did the same. I’ve been waiting for about ten years to buy a Mac workstation. I guess I will be waiting another decade. I’ll be an old man before this **** gets sorted out.

When the 2019 Mac Plutocrat was announced at TWICE the price of the Trashcan, I again considered buying a 2013 Mac Pro and a 3rd-party display, just to get myself a few years more up-to-date, a retina-resolution display, and something that can handle a bit more heat than the anorexic machines Apple expects us to buy (and so do countless Apple fanatics, who don’t know what thermal constraints are, apparently). Between this maddening display voodoo, and the nearly non-existent Thunderbolt 1/2 support out there (just try to find a drive enclosure for TB1/TB2, which is what you really want on a Mac without USB3), it makes no sense for me to spend $3000+ on a USED and outdated computer, just to get myself a bump in software support.

But then, I can’t exactly spend $8000 on a 2019 Mac Plutocrat PLUS display, either. I’m EFFED. Another ten years to wait.

Apple won me over with their great OS and solid unibody macbook builds (if you don’t run them hard), and their mobile devices, back in 2008-2012... but iOS has become a buggy pile of ****, and the computers have been a nightmare of thermal constraints, stupidly high prices, and display compatibility wackiness. Now that they’ve finally decided to do a proper workstation again, it’s just for Pixar studios and the like.

Screw you, Apple.

There are wonderful, ridiculously cheap offers for used DELL's UP2715k displays out there, in the 400 € range. Beautiful 5k Displays that run well on the Trashcan (I have two of them hooked up).

Buy the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter and use Thunderbolt 3 devices with the 2013 Mac Pro. Thunderbolt 3 devices and docks also add USB 3.1 gen 2. LG UltraFine 5K requires additional hardware though (Blackmagic eGPU or Thunderbolt 3 add-in card).

There’s no such thing as a Thunderbolt 3 add-on card for computers. eGPUs are notoriously problematic (especially in Windows, which is where I want to boot to do gaming when I’m not using my Mac for art/music), and there’s no official support for eGPU on Thunderbolt 1 & 2.

dysamoria
You can consider the latest macmini with i7, it's pretty powerful and flowlessly supports eGPU.

I don’t want compact computers. The lack of storage and RAM replacement, the thermal issues... I DID mention thermal issues in my original comment above...

Yours don’t have issues? Everywhere I read people using third-party displays with the Mac Pro 2013, I see issues. The display wont wake, the computer wont sleep/wont wake, tearing and color inconsistency between the two panels that make up the whole display, etc... That’s probably why they’re going cheap used... and why they’re discontinued.

ZERO issues since two years. Really. It's just that by driving two of them in certain apps like Adobe Premiere the interface can become a bit sluggish. The machine was just not made for driving that amount of pixels. But overall, I'm super glad I went that route back then, couldnt stand the none retina displays anymore.

Another vote here for the Dell UP2715k. No issues on the trashcan (or a 2014 iMac before that).

And a Thunderbolt 3 dock (with Apple's TB2 to 3 adapter) is useful if you need to hook up a Thunderbolt 3 device to a trashcan. This is not the same as connecting a USB-based USB-C device, even though the connector is the same. It won't run at Thunderbolt 3 speeds, so it can't drive a thunderbolt 3 monitor, but it can work with things like Thunderbolt 3 SSDs that wouldn't otherwise work with a USB-A to USB-C adapter. Like other docks, a Thunderbolt 3 dock also gives you several additional ports if needed.

I meant to say Thunderbolt 3 add-in card.
They don't work well in computers that don't have built in support. Support could be added though. My Mac Pro 2008 has two GC-TITAN RIDGE and two GC-ALPINE RIDGE. They work fine as USB 3.1 gen 2 ports or for converting DisplayPorts to USB-C or Thunderbolt. I have to warm boot from Windows to get Thunderbolt PCIe tunneling (without hot plug support) on the GC-TITAN RIDGE cards. GC-ALPINE RIDGE don't do Thunderbolt yet (requires more code I guess).

I have the Dell UP2715K. It's a very nice dual cable 5K display - no messing around with Thunderbolt with that display.

Thunderbolt 3 docks or devices are the best way to add USB 3.1 gen 2 to a Thunderbolt 2 Mac.
