Having my MacBook Pro open and to the right of the LG 5K UltraFine Display, I can say the LG display looks just fine next to MacBook Pro display. I don't look at the LG bezel all that much anyway since the display itself is just so gorgeous!

It runs at 4K on a Mac Pro. I saw one at the Carlsbad Apple store. They had another monitor connected to a Mac Mini and it looked like ass. Why they didn't connect it to a laptop that can actually use it is beyond me. Apple seems to have lost the attention to detail they once had which is very concerning because that affects so many things. Once I saw the stores were getting them in I canceled my online order and picked one up at the Fashion Valley store in San Diego.
I have been running it for about 30 minutes. Stunning screen. It was a very un-Apple experience opening it up but the screen is just so great. I'm not as concerned about looks as some people but LG could have expended a little bit of effort making it look better and matching Apple gear and Apple should have required them to do that.
By the way the power button on my 12.9 iPad Pro has been sticking and I made a Genius bar appointment and they swapped it out for a brand new one in 5 minutes so at least they still have good support. Since their revenues are down I wonder if they will start cutting back on support.
I installed the LG app for firmware updates etc. LG's web page for the monitor isn't very good. You click support and it goes to another page which you have to hunt down this monitor from. Why doesn't support go straight to a support page for this monitor? Ugh. LG.
I'm meandering I realize but I just got the monitor setup and am looking it over. Even with my bitching I haven't been this excited about a monitor since getting the original 27 inch Thunderbolt display.

Been today to the Regents store in London and was the same. One connect to the Mac Pro and the other to the Mac mini. Can't understand why they would do that...

My laptop (15" Radeon 460) runs quite a bit hotter with the monitor connected.
The screenshots below show temperature readings at idle with and without the monitor.
Playing Civ 6 without the monitor the fans are almost never audible. With the monitor the fans kick in quickly and some of the sensor temps exceed 200F.

The side the monitor is connected to has significantly higher thunderbolt port temp.
The power adapter plugged in does not generate the same high port temp.

Hope this doesn't cause components to fail prematurely. As much as I like the 15" display it's hard to use after using the 5k monitor.

Interesting .. geez I wonder how high it would get with two them connected and editing 4K video like apple says it can do

We're the fans loud ?

Mine has just been delivered (seems like most people are getting them today!)

Agree with what's been said already that the screen really is stunning. You really do ignore the bezels and the design once your using it, the colours and clarity are fantastic.

I was one of the folk worried about the performance with the 13 inch, and it's not as good as I'd like it to be. Mission control lags, resizing certain app windows causes a lot of stutter and 4k videos full in Chrome (no option in safari oddly) do lag and stutter if you do anything else on the machine at the same time.

I've plugged a 15 inch into it (with the 455 card) and performance is smooth as butter. Mission control and animations experience no lag, 4k video works full screen whilst I'm doing other bits on the laptop screen, with no stutter or reductions.

The 13 inch doesn't do a terrible job, but it's not as smooth as I'd like It to be. Looking at iStatMenu, the CPU is being absolutely hammered when playing 4k video in Chrome, so this could be something that get's better with software and performance updates.

Only other observations as pointed out already, are that the MacBook (15") does get quite warm towards the top of the touch bar with the monitor plugged in, and also the monitor isn't very sturdy. I have a fairly crap and unsteady desk, but the monitor is wiggling a little as I type with my elbows rested on the desk. YMMV.

Going to have a play with it for a week or so, and see what I think.

Idling the fans aren't audible with or without the monitor connected.

Playing Civ 6 with monitor connected yes, it gets quite loud. Civ 6 with no monitor fans run much quieter, often not audible.

Thanks for reporting back. Are you running the display in extended, clamshell, or mirror? Are you also using the stock cable?

My order is still in PFS, hoping to receive it this week. Love the form factor of the 13" so probably won't upgrade to a 15". If the performance is subpar, I'll likely return the 5K and wait for someone to make a true 4K 27" TB so that I can still use the screen as a proper dock with USB 3 speeds.

4k videos full in Chrome (no option in safari oddly)

Current build of Safari has a bug which won't allow 4K to be selection on YouTube. I reported it to Apple and the representative said he didn't know why it was happening but recommend I submit a bug report to the engineers and he would do the same from a higher level. So hopefully we get a fix for that too.

There's a bunch of other bugs I'm finding which means I find myself switching to Chrome for certain websites more often. Something strange going on with HTML and site buttons and stuff.

does get quite warm towards the top of the touch bar with the monitor plugged in

The CPU/GPU are below the top of the MacBook Pro. That getting warm just means the computer is working hard. It's just batteries and stuff under the arm wrests/keyboard.

Running in extended mode - using the cable that came with the monitor (I don't have another thunderbolt cable unfortunately to test). Working on it at the moment, and it's definitely not as bad as I was expecting, but the odd UI lag here and there (and the 4k video stutter in chrome) are just enough for me to think "is this level of performance going to be good enough for the next 3/5 years?"

I think it's worth getting the display and trying it, and if your happy with it's performance, huzzah! If not, return it and like you say, wait for the inevitable arrival of something better for you

The advertising states 5120x2880 resolution but nowhere can I find a setting to achieve such a resolution. I'm not arguing the merits of whether actually wants their display set to 5120x2880, just that I don't see where it's actually available.

Apple clearly made a mistake with the "looks like" scaling options since the confusion around it is enormous. I think they should have just named them "2x scaling, 1.5x scaling", etc. Most ppl should just use the "default for display" option.

Hi. Just got mine and wanted some opinions on the glow. The glow shifts on angle so tried to get the photos at view level. One is full brightness the other a bit above default.

It's a bit much on the bottom right, worth trying another?

How's it look during normal usage? As in do you notice it? I thought mine was perfect, and then even with a black screen it still looks damn good from front on, but a photo makes it look terrible!

Guess it's down to how much you notice it + if you can be bothered to wait for them to ship a replacement!

I noticed some light bleeding when viewing pure black and I thought it was acceptable. How's it look when viewing whites? My displays had a very noticeable pink / green hue, so I sent them in for replacements.

If you are replacing for minor light bleed you might be returning at least few times to get what you want.
Your replacement might have even worse light bleed. You shouldn't be care too much about it if you don't notice it under normal usage.

Unless you get the real professional monitors, they will have somewhat of unevenness.

Thanks again, really appreciate all the help. Will definitely do testing this week and report back here as well.

Might be a bit of a noob question but why are most people here defaulting to Chrome for 4K videos on YouTube? On Safari, I'm able to play 4K videos such as this one:
.

Has anyone been able to connect an Apple LED Cinema Display to the connect and work with the LG 5K Display. The third party adapter I have works perfectly if I connect they to my MBP separately but no response when plugging into the LG USB.

That won't work unfortunately - the ports on the back of the LG monitor are just USB C, so the Cinema Display doesn't understand the signal. The ports on the Mac send display port signals (which the Cinema Display does understand) through the adapter, hence why it works with that.

A major downside to USBC ports in my opinion, very easy to confuse what ports do what.

Laptop operating temperature connected to the 5k continues to rise while doing nothing but browsing Safari.
My first post had it idle for 10 minutes. This time the 2nd photo is browsing safari for 30 minutes (no video).

This has been on the Apple web site since day 1 in the "Tech Specs" section for the LG 5K UltraFine Display page:

Ports: One Thunderbolt 3 (input), three USB-C (USB 3.1 gen 1, 5Gbps)

Can anyone in this Thread who owns this beast and one of the older macs PLEASE connect it to your old machine through a TB2-TB3 adapter? I would really like to know how the image looks. If it's usable or complete nonsense.
Maybe it looks like a 27" 4k Display scaled to 1440p, in that case I would gladly go for it until there's a new mac pro.
But I can not imagine that it will look decent really..
