I noticed some light bleeding when viewing pure black and I thought it was acceptable. How's it look when viewing whites? My displays had a very noticeable pink / green hue, so I sent them in for replacements.

Good idea:

Looks pretty good. The bleed is only noticeable in the corners with a dark background, its a little annoying but hard to know if a replacement will be better or worse.

Having nothing else to do I called LG to inquire about the temperature with monitor plugged in.
I emailed them screenshots for reference.

LG said that it should not run hotter than when plugged into AC power and suggested sending it for repair.

I'm not sure they know what they're talking about as the GPU runs when the monitor is on so there should be some increase, just not sure a 30F across the board.

He agreed to send the screenshots to their engineers to review and said they'll get back to me in 3-4 days.

In the meantime I'm checking if any Apple stores have secret replacement inventory to try a swap for peace of mind.

Any word on walk-in store availability? Specifically EU or NL?
6-8 weeks sucks.

why don't you try calling apple ? tell them your temps rise a lot when running the lg monitor

I got my 5K this morning. I think the DPD guy was ready to pass out by the time he got to my door. I can't help but think that he delivered it first thing so he only had small light stuff the rest of the day!

The picture is amazing but I have already in the short period I used it this morning noticed some glitches which I believe are due to the 13" MBP being unable to cope. I had the cursor stay on the monitor in the middle of the video I was watching and the only way to remove it was to unplug the display and MBP.

I am going to see how it is this evening when I get back home; but I already visited an Apple Store and they said they would exchange it for a 15" if I decided to do so tomorrow. I can't say I want to do that as the 15" is larger and more expensive but I don't want to be stuck with a display that is going to be giving me performance issues and I need an external display.

So frustrating. I chatted with Apple earlier today as my screen is supposed to come in later this week and they confirmed again that the 13" should be fully compatible:
“From what I’m showing here, it definitely should be compatible with the 13-inch MacBook Pro as well! I’m showing that the only system requirements for the screen is macOS Sierra 10.12.1 or later, and a Thunderbolt 3-enabeld Mac. Your MacBook definitely meets both of these requirements, so should be able to use it without issues.”

Are you past the return date? And is the store offering to do a straight exchange or are they asking you to pay the difference?

Sorry to hear about your issues.

While the 13" for the most part was fairly smooth for me, I reluctantly exchanged it for the 15". I didn't want the 15" but having had it several days I'm thrilled with it. I found the higher resolution of the 15" makes working off the screen much nicer when not in front of a monitor. I have no regrets having switched, other than the huge cost increase.

If you return your 13 and get a 15, I assume the 2 week return policy will restart so if you don't like the 15's size or performance you can switch back. A hassle but you should be happy with your purchase.

Can anyone in this Thread who owns this beast and one of the older macs PLEASE connect it to your old machine through a TB2-TB3 adapter? I would really like to know how the image looks. If it's usable or complete nonsense.
Maybe it looks like a 27" 4k Display scaled to 1440p, in that case I would gladly go for it until there's a new mac pro.
But I can not imagine that it will look decent really..

I'm also trying to figure out if combining the LG 5k with an older MBP (mid 2014 15" in my case) is ok for a couple of month, till I might upgrade to a 2016/2017 MBP. My alternative plan is to get a used Dell P2715q till my equipment is ready for native 5k. (Currently I'm using a Thunderbolt Display)

The only information bit I found on the running the LG with older but compatible (via the Thunderbolt 2 adapter) MBPs is the review over at iMore, which states, that it "worked fine and looked great". Any more details by people who have experience with that combo would be greatly appreciated!

exactly what I thought.

Someone sent me their monitor connected specs and they are 20F cooler than mine at idle.
If they were much closer to mine then I'd think it's normal but because of this difference it has me concerned.. and I hate hearing the fans kick in much more often.

I want to test with my old 34" (3440x1440) but I'd need to buy a USB-C thunderbolt to display port cable, maybe tomorrow.

Interesting thing... I reconnected the thunderbolt cable at both ends and GPU idle temp is now 10F less than before. Airport temp 10F cooler. Other temps down 4-7F each. Why would reconnecting the cable do that?

I am going to swap it tomorrow; my returns period has finished and they agreed to do it as an after returns exchange.

I know it will be too big to carry in my existing bag; but I will have a Macbook Pro that won't have issues with this display and that if worst comes to worse I can return again or sell for more than the cost of a new 13" so it is a no lose scenario other than the £600 difference between the spec I have of 13 to 15.

£600?! Ouch, that sucks. Apple should be doing more since the 13" are supposed to work but instead, you have to get a larger laptop (re: your bag) and spend more out of pocket :(

I'm in your boat. Have two TB Displays right now attached to my nMP. Right now I'm leaning to either go with Dell's 2715Q until the nMP gets an update for TB3, or just stay with the TB Displays (wich is tough).

But It kind of would be the more elegant solution to buy the display that I really want right now straight away, especially because of the huge discount!

Using the 13" TB i5 and the performance seems quite good so far. Can strain with full screen video but normal desktop tasks looking good. I found even 1080p video skipping a few frames in full screen, one way to remedy this is to drop res to native 1080p of course.

Personally losing the portability of the 13" would make me question using the notebook/desktop solution in its entireity as the 15" is getting closer to the full screen, but this is also coming from a rMB owner so that's a very important factor.

At what resolution are you currently running the 5K screen? Full 5K or scaled? Thanks!

Usually at 1440 (default scaling), but have tried the higher res and even native 5k and the frames look similar. Can notice a small drop when I attach another 1440 monitor though.

That makes me a bit more optimistic. I'm running i7 with Iris 550. I'm planning on only attaching the 5K to my 13" in clamshell mode with no other displays connected.

Now... if only Fedex could be any more vague about where my screen actually is...

Thats with the student discount, £1700 for my 13 plus 16GB ram to the mid range 15" with 16GB ram. It isn't ideal. But I think that it gives me the best options going forward as far as better performance on the display and the ability to change back to the 13" without having to pay up front again.

Not aware of your unit has specific overheating issue. Mine really doesn't kick up the fan or anything. My MBP gets mildly warm when doing normal task aka web surfing. I really hasn't heard my fan kick in yet. If you local Apple store has the LG 5K on display you can try the display unit with your MBP?

Below is what my sensors look like with the MacBook Pro open and the second display set to "extend" mode. The LG 5K display and OWC ThunderBay 4 with four drives is attached as well.

Let me know! I'm thinking of cancelling the LG UF 5k for a 34" ultra-wide... the issues here make this looking increasingly a bad bet and I would get the 34" several weeks earlier

The LG 5K display is incredible and in no way a "bad bet". I been using the display for 13 days now and still think it is spectacular to look at and use. I have had zero problems with the display.
