Hmmm, Capture One Pro 10 works well for me. What kind of slow down do you experience?

I get beachballs all the time. Navigating through the image browser takes forever. Just moving to the next image gets me beachballs. Adjusting the image is more beachballs.

Capture One Pro 10 was previously fairly responsive on my 30" Apple Cinema Display and my mid-2012 MBP. It wasn't fast by any means, but it was acceptable. Now it's slow. Super slow. I always use it with two screens with the image browser on my MBP and the Viewer on the Ultrafine 5K.

The 10.0.2 update just came out a couple of days ago. I'll install that. Maybe a fresh reinstall will fix the speed issues. My copy right now was the one migrated over from my mid-2012.

Curious if anyone switched from a 5K iMac to a MBP + 1x or 2x LG 5K's? and how your workflow is going? any noticeable change in speed or productivity with a slightly less power mobile CPU

That's what I did. I had an 27" 5K iMac + 12" MB. When the new MBP came out I picked up a 15" and used it with two LG 5K's at the office and immediately preferred that setup over the iMac, so I got two LG's for home as well. I design and develop apps/websites. Having two screens immediately increased my productivity, I can have one screen with my code and the other with the preview. Additionally, I use the MBP as my primary computer now, which eliminates the need to sync up my computers and since I have the same setup at my office, I just plug in and pick up where I left off. The setup replaces my iMac, but I still have it for personal use. As far as performance, the iMac is faster, but it's not noticeable for the work I do.

Things are pretty snappy with my Sony A7r2 raw files (42 mpix), but then I run Capture One Pro 10 on either my MBP screen or the LG 5K monitor. Maybe the app doesn't like working on two screens? I will try that tomorrow.

I switched from my customac (see signature) to a 15" MBP w/ single 5k display.

It's much more convenient now. Definitely not as powerful, but it gets the jobs done well enough.

I've retired my customac to a plex server/gaming machine for now

I also use an A7RII and Capture One Pro and all recent versions have been a dog. V10 is unusable for me when using two displays. I tried the viewer and tools on the 5K and browser on the MacBook but gave up quickly as it took 2-5 seconds to advance from one image to the next. It also performs best when the display being used is set to true retina scaling (e.g 2560x1440 on the 5K) or true Native resolution. This is likely because any other scaled resolution offering more desktop space is crunching more pixels (2x the effective resolution and then downscaling). Other scaled resolutions are incidentally also no good for viewing images zoomed to 100% as they don't offer 1:1 pixel mapping like pure retina or native.

So while I run 3200x1800 normally, I switch to 2560x1440 when using Capture One with the browser on the right and it gives me a pretty good area to work with on this 5K display. And at 100% zoom I'm seeing a good portion of my image in the viewer. I'm pretty happy with the result and the performance is acceptable.

Another thing I like is that the track pad on this 15" MacBook is so large it can double as a stylus pad for brushing layer masks. My Wacom is now collecting dust. :)

Well, I just upgraded to Capture One Pro 10.0.2 so it's a clean install direct to my new MBP and the performance is much improved from before. I don't know if it's the install that did it or the upgrade to 10.0.2. It's not blazing fast by any means, but it's not maddeningly slow anymore. It's now somewhat better than on par with the way Capture One Pro performed on my mid-2012 MBP.

Has anyone picked up an LG 5K display at Apple Store where the white seal on the box was already broken?

I just unboxed mine and noticed the white paper seal was already split open. The inside contents appear to be unused, but not %100 sure. Maybe an employee placed a newer usbc cable

Or maybe it was cracked open at the factory and fitting with the shielding before shipping! :)

when I unboxed mine in beginning of Jan, the seal was also broken. it couldn't have been returned because I ordered in Dec, no one had it back then.
Are you referring to this seal?

I wouldn't be happy about that to be honest.

Has anyone had issues with the USB-C to USB-A adapter plugged into the back of the display? I use a couple for devices—a Yeti Microphone and a Demo Label printer. Sometimes when I plug my MBP into the display, the USB devices lose connection and I have to unplug and replug the USB adapter to get the back running. I have these two specific devices going to a USB hub, but it happened without the hub as well.

As a next step, I'm going to try a powered USB hub to see if that makes a difference on the connectivity.

But other than that, I'm pretty happy since my original woes of trying to decide if the display is worth it or not (it is, in my opinion).

Then today...I noticed some retention (think that's the term) when opening an app. I keep Messages at the bottom left of my screen. When I opened up InDesign at full screen, I noticed Messages ghosting down there. Holy burn-in, Batman! I'd never seen anything like that before (well, since burn in on old CRTs). It went away after a few minutes, but it definitely something I'm going to need to be on the lookout for. Maybe I need to adjust my screensaver to run more often when I step away from the desk...

My logitech wireless mouse transmitter is connected to the back of the monitor with a USB-C adapter, works fine.
When I connected my iphone via a second adapter the mouse stopped working. Had to connect the iphone directly to the laptop and then reconnect the mouse dongle on the monitor to get the mouse working again.

Thank you for the updates. Been looking to purchase a display and you have been helping me a lot. I want to accomplish a similar setup

I'm going to try ordering a powered USB hub to see if maybe my devices are pulling too much power for the adapter. That's the only thing I can think of.

I'm having the same issue with an Anker powered USB hub. Just spent an hour with AppleCare last night. Not saying you shouldn't try it, even with my issues half the hub usually works, I just have to switch ports regularly. Frustrating. But there seem to be USB hub issues whether its powered or not. Apple advisors have acknowledged as much to me.

I have a similar issue. My external Apple Keyboard connected through a USB-C to USB-A adapter to the monitor is sometimes not functional upon wake-up. I either need to unplug the dongle or restart the machine to get it working.

Cheers,
Bernard.

I use Capture One Pro 9 overall it works well but there is minor lag with brush tool.
Is version 10 smooth on everything?

I wouldn't be happy about that to be honest.

same here seal broken and I got one of the first batch delivered so it couldn't be used. content inside the box seems all brand new so I didn't bother.

I ordered one of these for a client a couple of weeks ago and it was a disaster. The 2015 MacBook Pro it was plugged into - with a Thunderbolt --> USB-C adapter - continued to generate kernel panics when the monitor was plugged in. The monitor never even lit up or gave an indication that it had any power.

I tried plugging this into another machine that normally uses an Apple Thunderbolt Display, and this generated the same results.

When I called AppleCare, I was told "Oh that monitor doesn't work with anything except USB-C" (which really was news to me, and seems to contradict other people I know who say they are successfully running it - albeit in 4K mode - on older devices using the adapter.)

I was not happy with the fact that Apple Support refuses to discuss this, since they now take the tact of "We don't actually *make* that monitor", but their site sells it. Very unhappy with Apple (and their billions of $$$ in assets) deciding to delegate this to another company and not brand it on their own.

I highly doubt Steve would have tolerated such a solution, which essentially says "LG can build a better monitor than we can". Which I don't believe to be the case.

IMPORTANT NOTE - re. returns/replacements

- Background:
I have two LG 5K's. They were ordered on the first date available (excluding that earlier day in Nov!) in December on 20.Dec.2016, and were delivered on 10.Jan.2017.
Like many others, I've had the issues with screen flicking when first plugging in and then 10 minutes or so of on/off behaviour, with further blackouts at random while using past that initial 10 mins. Reading extensively and following the issues online, obviously I've heard that this is likely to be caused by the EM (electro-magnetic) interference issue, and lack of insulation to defend against it.
After owning them for 5 weeks now, upgrading macOS to 10.12.3 on my maxed-out 15" MBP, and having my router away from the monitor, they still display "issues". So I want to return/replace them for new "issues free" ones.

- Replacement attempt:
I phone Apple. First they try and say it's outside of the normal returns period (2 weeks Apple policy, 30 days UK Consumer Rights Act 2015) and to contact LG accordingly. But after prompting them about the known issues and the admission statement from LG about the first batches being wrongly manufactured, they said they'd "do an exemption" and accepted return for replacement or refund.

HOWEVER, if I proceeded, they expected me to return both displays within 10 days (they'd have them picked up at a date of my choosing), with absolutely NO idea on when replacements would be available for shipping to me. The manager I ended-up speaking to at Apple said they could NOT allow me to keep them until replacements were shipped to me, and then accept the first faulty pair back – even if I was happy for them to charge me for the second pair and then refund me when I returned the first ones!
It's highly likely this would have meant returning them on say, day 9, and then waiting 2/3/(or longer??) weeks for replacements to be sent out whenever they were available. He said that they usually expedite replacements before new orders, but couldn't comment further on likely timeframe for the replacements to be shipped.

- Solution:
Not good enough, I said – they really expect me to go without any external displays for my work for an indeterminate number of days/weeks until they possibly/maybe replace them!

I noticed Apple's website were offering "3-4 weeks" shipping time on new orders, so instead decided to simply order two new displays for future delivery, and will then return the first pair as if they were the second ones, within the two weeks of Apple's normal returns period. (from my long experience with Apple's delivery dates, they almost always show accurate dates; preferring to beat them by delivering early, rather than not meet the advertised date at time of order.)

(of course I explained this ludicrous returns problem to the manager on the phone, and explained my get-around that effectively bypasses Apple's silly return for replacement procedure, but all to no avail!)

And no, Apple do not track the serial numbers of non-Apple third-party items they sell, so they can't track which ones you end up returning, either. ;-)
_________

So anyone in a similar position, I suggest you do this, rather than bother wasting an hour on the phone to Apple attempting to get replacement outside of their returns period, and/or doing the same by wasting your time and effort dealing with LG to get the ones you currently have "refurbished"!

Hope this helps.
[doublepost=1487099725][/doublepost]I should add...

The serial number is behind the removable stand/VESA panel on the back ("612" at the front means "2016 December"), and importantly, it also show the manufacturer date, e.g. "December 2016 / 12.2016" on my two. You cannot get the serial number from System Information or the LG Screen Manager on your Mac, or anywhere else in the software, unfortunately.

I have had three of these now, all have gone back except for the original - which has been the best of the lot.

A post by another member reminded me that the seal on the original one I received was broken too. I believe I was the first (or one of the first) in the UK to receive the model, and I have a sneaky suspicion that it was manually inspected or even tweaked before it was shipped to me.

The two others I have had, while have been nice, have been noticeably less bright - they've also had somewhat of a green tint. The whites on this one (the first one I received) are a brilliant white (it really is quite something).

I've asked if I can hold on a few weeks and try again (as the latest one I received, even tho around the 10th of Feb, was actually manufactured in Jan), my rep has said that'd probably be ok but I might not be able to hang on to this one (though I imagine I will just place an order for the new one so it's a new order rather than a return).

Anyway just wanted to update you all.

The 30 days in the UK is around damage of the product upon delivery. LG have admitted to a manufacturing flaw which means the 30 days is irrelevant, standard warranty applies, i.e. first year is from the seller, second year is manufacturer under EU law, then there is the UK sale of goods act which goes far further. Apple MUST accept returns if one is requested, they are not making a special exception.
