Just tried 10.12.4 and the volume bug is still not fixed. Out of interest, does everyone have this bug (where it's super loud anything past the 2nd volume notch)?

Hello LG Ultrafine 5k owners,

Because of a problem with image retention I need your help to decide, if it is the best option to exchange my display. Therefore it would be great, if someone could answer some of the following questions:

1. Are there really displays LG Ultrafine 5k, that doesn’t suffer the issue of image retention/ghosting. My display shows the ghosting effect after only 5 minutes of using static images/windows. (it would be great, if someone test this with some existing methods)

2. Do you consider this a inherent issue of the display technology like Apple does? Regarding this Apple says that this could happen, leaving an image o long period of time, but in my case it happens only after about 5 minutes.

2. Normally the ghosting effect occurs since the first day? (Maybe some iMac users could answer this)

3. Is it probably, that the issue gets worse with the time?

Appreciate your help a lot

Man, it's amazing how the brightness fix in 10.12.4 makes using the display feel far better. I tend to dial it down at night a bit, so this will be welcome. It's the small things right?

I think it's safe to say that the volume thing must be a display firmware issue, as I'd be shocked if Apple couldn't be bothered to fix this at the same time. This is where the "3rd party factor" is annoying as we'd have seen this fixed if this was an Apple display (or it would have never been an issue in the first place).

All in good time I guess.

Anyone else's FaceTime camera working fine in every app except FaceTime? I have reset and restored macOS and even updated to 10.12.4 today. Nothing has fixed it.

Ok I have NO idea how but my volume control is fixed?!

Here's what happened.

1) Tried volume after updating to 10.12.4 - it was still too loud past the second notch.
2) Unplugged the Mac and used for a few hours.
3) Restarted whilst unplugged.
4) Plugged back into the LG Ultrafine today and suddenly the volume control is fine!

Not sure how or why this is fixed...and not sure if it's permanent but I'm now very happy.

It does seem that max volume is now lower than it used to be though.. Not sure if thats intended or not but yeh just wanted to share this with you guys as it might help figure out how to fix for everyone else.

Mine's not, just thought I'd give it a try, but didn't work for me.

That said, I'm almost certain there was one time I plugged mine in and the volume actually WAS correct as well.

LG / Apple really need to fix this soon though, it's insane this is still an issue 5 months into the release of this display.

Mines gone back to the bug now :( Was short lived. I can't seem to get it to go back to fixed either.

I tried a combination of connecting/disconnecting AirPods and other headphones, connecting/disconnecting the display whilst volume is high or low on the MacBook Pro etc. Nothing seems to work. Maybe just got lucky yesterday.

So, probably the last day for a discount on these displays: what's the consensus? Buy/not buy? Wait for TB3 alternatives from other manufacturers? Use a TB3 dock (if they ever ship) with a display from another manufacturer e.g. Dell? Would like 27" and >=4K, high gamut colour would be nice but not essential, ideally with a 1-cable solution for data/video and charging for a 15" MBP.

Same question here, what do the current owners of the display advise?

I don't regret my purchase. I still have some of the niggles mentioned in these threads like the odd volume levels, but overall I'm happy and the image quality is just amazing.

While other manufacturers may come out with 5K monitors, I doubt you will see anything like this LG that includes the camera, speakers, and one cable operation. I think with any other setup you will be stuck with some sort of hub situation.

macOS 10.12.4 fixed the slow brightness adjustment, so that makes me optimistic somebody somewhere at Apple is aware of and working on the bugs.

If you don't need the 5K and want a 27 inch display that is "head and shoulders" above the LG in panel quality, aesthetic design, warranty (5 years) and has a rich matte screen and is made in Japan using high quality components (versus China for the LG) check out the Eizo EV2750, EV2780 or CS2730. I returned my flawed LG Ultrafine 5K and bought the Eizo EV2750. Very glad I passed on the LG.

Here is a review of the Eizo EV2750:

The Eizo 2750 comes in black which coordinates well with my 15" Space Grey late 2016 MBP and also in white as shown in the video review.

The monitor is currently the best option for the 2016 MBP. However, I find the 27" size small and the 5k resolution unusable.

Note if you are in the US and order now, there is a high probability you will receive a retrofitted/refurbished unit. I ordered on 03/15/17 and received/returned a 612, 701, and finally 703. Luckily the 703 panel was good and had shielding from the factory. At the time of receiving the 612 and 701 unit I did not know they were retrofitted (neither did LG).

It is strange that LG is selling retrofitted/refurb units as new. There is no way we can tell whether they were previous customer returns or old factory stock. Either way seems like a cheap practice.

So, two days before the sale ended, Apple Switzerland made the display available. For the first time, almost half a year after the keynote! Today it's full price. Still 2-3 weeks shipping times. Almost feels like a very bad April fools joke.
I'm so glad I ordered my 5Ks in late February in Germany instead. A bit more expensive and some effort required to get them myself in Germany but I'm enjoying those wonderful displays for a while already :)

So yesterday, the last day of the sale, I ordered another one.

FEDEX just delivered it .... aaaaand ... it's a 701, with a black dot.

It's going back. I won't even bother to open the box. Since this is now my *third* try, I think I'll be looking for an alternative monitor now.

It means it has shielding.
