Under COVID, dished out for a LG 5k with concerns in a mixed eco system...
But MacBook pro works perfectly with it and so does my Thinkpad T480s using Thunderbolt 3: webcam, speakers, all work and with a little extra freeware software one can control screen brightness too.
2 days in and its is a "think again" for those who thought this was just a Mac monitor.
Hello,
I have the same config but I have still a lot of issue with the LG flickering with the T480s using TB3.
Have you ever met this issue too ?

Raph

Thunderbolt 3 will be on Apple Silicon devices. AMD have already licensed the port from Intel already, and Apple wouldn't remove it on AS, as it would mean a regression in speeds available and mass incompatibility with millions of TB3 devices already being used on Macs now.

That's a relief and what I read about USB4 has been promising as well.

How close is the image quality of the LG 5K Ultrafine to the iMac Pro?

I recently got the LG 27UL850W 4K monitor. Although it is nice, the contrast, color and overall image quality of my iMac Pro are significantly better. And I'm not sure why.

Reference? EDIT: I see now where they announced it this afternoon  https://www.theverge.com/circuitbre...icon-intel-thunderbolt-arm-macs-support-usb-c

I finally took the plunge and got this monitor. I set it up with excitement. The picture looks great. However, I noticed the power outlet on the back of the monitor is protruding some (almost looks like it’s not fully plugged in). While plugging a couple other cables in, I barely touched the power cord. My MacBook and monitor screens flickered for a moment (as if I unplugged the cable).

Has anyone else experienced this? Seems ridiculous for a $1299 monitor to have such a sensitive power outlet. Should I immediately return for a replacement?

It shouldn’t protrude. It should be flush with the rest of the monitor.

Yes, if it’s causing your monitor to flicker. Did you get it directly from Apple?

Yes I got it from Apple. It only flickers when I accidentally touch the cord (not every time, but enough to be annoying). Which is something that should not happen too often but it’s worrisome if this wears overtime and the plug does not stay in.

I’d take it back. While you are there, also see if you are eligible for a 10% corporate discount based on your employer. It’s a great monitor, and even better for $1170.

I actually just tried pushing in the power outlet more and it’s finally somewhat flushed...maybe it’s okay now. Not sure why it took so many tries to get it flushed. I wasn’t aware of the corporate discount. How is that accessed typically through the employer or the apply website?

From your employer, usually there is a Perks at Work link. But at the store just ask an associate to look up your employer’s name. Since you are within the return period I’d suggest asking an associate or submitting a chat request to see if they can retroactively apply a corporate discount if one applies.

That’s basically how mine looks. Not quite “flush” but certainly not what your first photo looked like.

Anybody in this group had the idea to try to take this LG UltraFine 5K display apart and try to fit this into Apple Thunderbolt Display enclosure to make an Apple 5k Thunderbolt display!

Anyone ever figure out how to update the firmware if you keep getting the "plug out monitor" error? Anywhere I can download the 3.11 firmware .zip file?

I'm tempted to buy the 23.7-inch UltraFine 4K Display, mmm I prefer 24 than 27, I don't need a big monitor.
Price is $700? any way to buy it brand new for less? any promo or deal or store? tips?
I should or wait for a real apple monitor for the average consumen? mmm maybe never happens... mmm....

Happy to report that since yesterday, I have an LG UltraFine 5K.
This was not intended - my „old“ (only 5 1/2 years) Dell UP2414Q broke down and I needed a new monitor instantly. Good working with Macs, high resolution, matte, webcam, speakers and same-day availability were my main criteria. Funnily enough, the LG fitted best, and I went for immediate action

Therefore, I deliberately did not consult Macrumors before purchasing to learn about issues and stuff ;)

As of now (24 hours), everything is fine. Only 4K on display as the Mac is an early 2015 MBP 13“ but crisp and sharp nevertheless. Glossy, alas, but that is less bad than expected.

Prediction: I will keep it. But there is a lot left of the two weeks return period so we will see.

Same as me, everything was perfect at first...
It just the insane image retention issue will arise sooner or later, and only gets worse.

Do you have the old 27MD5KA-B version or the new 27MD5KL-B version? I have two of the newer ones for a while now and no image retention problems, you can also find those problems were all fixed in the 27MD5KL-B

I first had 27MD5KA-B, then it developed the image retention about a year or two in, then I bought 2 * 27MD5KL-B to replaced it. One developed within a week and got pretty bad, the second one had it right from beginning but wasn't that bad. Both end up returned immediately.

A lot of people also reporting the same issue after awhile. Every single demo unit I saw in countless Apple store have this problem. My friend's LG UltraWide 5K also have this issue as well after about a year of usage. That is when I realized almost all LG panels exhibit similar problem. Hence why there is a lottery on Retina MBP for display between LG and Samsung back then....

I decided to just dump the LG and got myself a CP7271k with AU Optronic panel.

That's strange, I did see the issue on the first version but didn't encounter it on the new version (there are multiple at the company I work at).

Just picked up a 27MD5KA-B from ebay for £250...seller couldn't test it to make sure it was working and there is a small mark on the front sceen in the bottom left so he was selling it for parts/not working with no returns. Luckily my gamble paid off, monitor works perfectly, the mark isn't noticeable in use and I would have vesa mounted it anyway. Not seeing any ghosting issue but not sure what I would be looking for. I definitely like the iMac like screen experience and proper retina display as well as built in webcam.

For reference I came from a Benq BL-3201PT 4K IPS 32" monitor...which was actually a bit too big really. I am also using an app called loopback which creates virtual sound devices to output all sound to both the monitor and my 16" MBP simultaneously and it sounds pretty good!

So far no image retention after 3 months using a 27MD5KL-B. I did get a 3 year service plan from an LG contractor for $89.

Okay, I have searched through...I have the 5K, and a 16" MBP and would like one wire running into it, but if I plug in my ethernet adapter (belkin) into the 5K, I get less than half of my gig speed. I may solve this with a T3 Plus dock, but I'm seeing those have issues too?

Has anyone recently tried the newer Realtek driver with this setup and had it work fine?

It is a known issue that the USB ports on the back of the LG are limited. Earlier in this thread someone had issues with network adapter speed.
