If you're waiting for LG to fix firmware issues, you really should buy a different brand.
I agree and even if they do fix the issues who is to say they won’t come back in the next OS. At this point I would advise against buying the 5k display but the problem for me is that I am used to the iMac and so the 4K displays look bad to me. It may be worth waiting for the M1 iMac variant now.

7 days in now with the M1 Mac mini and Ultrafine 5K ... I am delighted with my purchase.

The only issue I've incurred 'occasional jagged widget line' (or 1" column of misaligned pixels as others have described) is resolved very easily by enabling hot corners in Mac OS. Set a corner to 'Lock Screen', use it and the issue goes away ie. no need to reboot Mac. Other than that, it's performing superbly for me. My alternative choice was ponying up for the Pro XDR, but a quick glance in their owners thread suggests it has niggles of its own.

I checked in the System Report (Apple Logo -> About This Mac -> System Report -> Thunderbolt) and it seems to indicate my display has a firmware release of v43.1 (at least I'm assuming that's the display f/ware)

:)

That is the same version as my LG 5K.

so I have the m1 mba and this display on the latest firmware and it just randomly disconnects. It still powers my mba when the 5k display turns off. The only thing that fixes this is unplugging the monitor for 5-10 mins. It's done this with 2 different m1 machines now so Im guessing its a faulty monitor. Anyone have this same issue?

Maybe M1 machines are faulty? What if you put a Thunderbolt 3 dock or device between the M1 Mac and the display?

Mine is fine except for an occasional offsetting of a column of pixels. As someone suggested, locking screen and unlock fixes it. Other than that, I am very happy.

I may contact Apple about this given I purchased directly from Apple.

Definitely not normal. I'd contact Apple about it. No screen wake up issues though?

I have tried the cal digit dock and anker dock and it makes no difference. Im going to replace the monitor with a new 5k and hope for the best.

Anyone using the BenQ ScreenBar Plus with their LG 5K display? Does it get in the way of the camera?

Got the Mac Mini M1 along with the LG 5K, both from Apple. The problem with the screen saver freezing has mostly gone away but I still have a problem with the column of misaligned pixels and that neither 3200x1800 nor 3840x2160 resolutions are options. Have 11.1 installed and the lock screen suggestion does not make a difference. Anyone else having similar problems or have any suggestions? Have to admit I'm rather disappointed at the number of issues as this was a big purchase for me.

I just run mine in the "Default for display" mode. The Lock Screen workaround is working for me.

I am hoping that 11.2 will fix this, but may give Apple a call.
Default for display mode just puts it into 2560 x 1440 for me. Agree that hopefully a software fix is in the near future.

I have a 27 inch 4K HP Z75 which works as a great hub, was considering getting the LG Ultra Fine but after all these issues not sure. The monitor works fine with my M1 MacBook Air. So I would just be gaining resolution not screen size, seems like a very expensive purchase for that.

It's a well known limitation of the M1 that it cannot do HiDPI virtual resolutions above 3008 horizontally. You can force it to go to 3200x1800, but thats going to look jagged and blurry. No one has figured a way around this yet on multiple monitors including apples XDR.

Thanks saulinpa for the SwitchResX suggestion.
Philstuman, I didn't realize that about HiDPI so that's good to know.

SwitchResX doesn't work on the M1's like it used to just as an FYI.

Yeah the lack of decent HiDPI resolutions is what's held me back from buying one. But I trawled through this forum checking the owners of the XDR, LG Ultrafine 5k, LG 5K2K monitors and no one had any luck getting a scaled resolution higher than 3008 horizontally. While apple did release a note saying they were looking into widescreen monitor compatibility, it doesn't seem to be this issue. The new Beta does not fix the problem.

You still can use it to select resolutions that System Preferences won't.
Yep, But not the HiDPI resolutions like you used to. All its doing is just making the monitor scale the output you’ve selected, hence the reason it looks all jagged. It can’t get around the 3008 width virtual wall unfortunately.

I don't see jagged at 3200x1800 on my mini M1 with the original LG 5K. I see text a bit softer/a touch blurred. Quite usable depending on what you are looking for. Note that resolution is scaled in the Mac to 5K. The 3840x2160 is not scaled and looks sharper.
