But my current desktop PC is about to be 12 years old and it's time for a new computer. Want to try out macOS as long as I won't regret it by missing things that are easy to do or possible in Windows.
It is not difficult to find a bargained 8 to 10 years old Intel iMac for peanuts.
They are hard to sell, since they have a HDD build into a glued frame.
Else they were technically 2-3 years ahead of their time.
The good thing: you can easily run macOS from an external SSD and it's quite snappy.
The better thing: you can easily run Windows 11 too.
And if you get a model with a "fusion drive" you can reconfigure them to run the OS from the NVMe blade and the data on the HDD.

You are unusual in being equally fluent on Mac and Windows, so in a position to make a balanced assessment. Most peoples view is coloured by what they are used to.

Many (most?) people learned their computing skills, and became comfortable with one or the other OS. Changing to the other OS is not as difficult as switching to a foreign language, but there are similarities. There is no sensible answer to which is better, French or English?
Can't agree with you more.

One of my friends bought a 2015 MBP but ended up installing Windows and using Windows only on MBP; while another one who only uses MAC always says Mac is better than Windows, and Keynote is far better than PowerPoint...We know there is no simple conclusion like that.

I thought closing the lid would actually keep the screen cleaner as dust and other stuff won't be able to get to it. Is this wrong? Also, wouldn't closing the lid also keep dust out of the cooling system as the vents are located at the top of the keyboard and are closed off when you close the lid?
More than just a few Macbooks had problems with the screen cable harness. It's better not to strain it too much when it's not necessary.

Yes! My first “Mac” experience besides playing games in my elementary school library was when I bought a 2005 PPC Mac Pro and opened it up and changed the drives and started messing around with it. Eventually getting a 2010 MBP and loving that until the 2015 MBP (RIP) that ended up running Windows for me in the end. A computer is just a tool. Sometimes you can use the same tool to do another job.

I’d suggest looking thru eBay and just finding a good deal on an Intel based MBP and just see what happens.

My boss bought a MacBook Air specifically so he could install Windows on it and use it for work. Says it’s the best Windows computer he’s ever used. But then I’m also currently using my M1 MBP booted into Linux at the moment. Computers! Whaddayagonnado

Your boss is not alone, I know many people love the beauty and quality of Mac, while still loving to use Windows, so install Windows on Mac and almost only use Windows.

I have one Thinkpad laptop with a touchscreen running Windows 11 Pro, I use that mostly for PDF notes via the pen, it's really so convenient to write on the screen directly. I also use that to keep trying new Windows features, I'd keep up with both OS.

I had a Hackintosh 'build-your-own' I used briefly, too. Got to be too annoying keeping up with both app & system updates. Was pretty fast, though. IMO the 2015 MBP was the best. I had removed the SuperDrive and put in a second SSD and had also upgraded the main drive. I had it setup perfectly to dual boot into Windows.. But the Battery would swell up and eventually bump up against the logic board and cause faults. Was a big known issue. I had mine repaired TWICE while still under AppleCare+ warranty, the second time being with about a month left on the warranty. Eventually the drive started swelling up again, and I just turned it off and bought the M1 MBP. And now half the time I use it I'm booted into Asahi Fedora linux 😆 I would definitely still be using that 2015 MBP if it didn't have that battery issue. It's never good when the battery swells up like it's going to burst lol

What do you guys think about the Magic Mouse? I've never used one so just looking for some feedback. I assume it would be better integrated into macOS than a third-party mouse?
Love Apple products but have never been a fan of Apple keyboards or their mouse. I'm totally sold on the Logitech MX series of Keyboards and the Anywhere mouse. With BT, I'm able to switch between devices with just the push of a button. Satechi also produces excellent peripherals and recently introduced a BT Mechanical keyboard with the same features as the Logitech MX that I'm interested in.

Yeah they have us locked down hard. If it's not in the base OS out of the box I'm out of luck.
That is frequently the case. People compare theirs Windows job-PCs (where they are screwed by the admins) with their private home Mac (where they are screwed by Apple).
:p

Oh yeah. At least with desktop computers we're free to use any product we want.

But man I wish I were able to rip out that Apple keyboard from my M1 16" MBP and replace it with something human-oriented. My previous MBP from 2013 had an amazing normal keyboard. But the new one is just horrible (in my view).

Pardon my ignorance but how can you install Windows on Mac? Won't you need Parallels or some other emulator running on macOS?
On Intel Macs from 2013 on, it's pretty easy to install Windows 11 as a dual-boot option: prepare an USP post installer with all drivers with Boot Camp and prepare an USB installer with Rufus. With tat piece of software, you can configure the install stick to ignore the requirement for a TPM chip. Before 2013 it may be somewhat trickier to install directly: then use fully Boot-Camp with Windows 10.
Of couse you can also run Windows in a virtual machine within macOS.

Thanks for the info.

So do I understand correctly that all these options only apply to Intel Macs - but not Silicon?

My switch to mac basically came when Microsoft released the pos Vista. Needed to get a new laptop, because the old one let the smoke out..... went to best buy and told the salesperson what I needed it to do and he showed me a laptop that was a decent price, and said it would do everything I needed it to do as windows vista is the cat's meow...... YEAH RIGHT. Brought that pos home, set it up and then tried to do things I needed a laptop to actually do. It worked ok for about 30 minutes and then would start randomly crashing multiple times. Took it back to the best buy and the sales person took me to the "geek squad" area, after an hour of wasted time, the tech said to me well what do you expect? This machine only has 2gb of ram, and it needs at least 4gb to run vista kinda ok. Told him to have the salesperson who sold it to me come over. He came to the tech area, had the person who told me tell him the same thing, and told them I refuse to pay for a ram upgrade after buying it less than 3 hours ago, and was told it will do anything I need it to do, and it does everything I don't need it to do, I do not need it to do random bsod in the middle of doing work. They eventually put in the 4gb of ram after a giant argument involving the store manager. It barely did what I wanted and needed it to do which was email and basic office stuff as well as internet. A couple weeks later my friend came to the starbucks I hang out in and still do hang out there, and I was fighting with that stupid vista laptop. He said you want to try my G4 iBook, I just bought a new MacBook and do not need the iBook? Tried his old G4 iBook and was quite impressed, it did what I asked it to do, didn't complain, or cause me to have fits trying to use it. I used that iBook for probably 3 years and then got a black MacBook, used that for a few years, then got a MacBook pro 2011 that ended up having the mainboard failure issue with the gpu. Ended up getting a 2015 MacBook air which I sold to my friend who's having issues with his windows laptop, had that running macOS ventura thru OCLP, and just recently installed sonoma on it for him the same way, was using a dell latitude with windows 11 and just couldn't deal with windows crap and the likely constant spying by microsoft, and know that if I blasted the senile imbecile idiot who is occupying the white house by theft on facebook, microsoft would allow the ip and machine id to be released to whomever unlike apple. Got lucky last night at the Lake County ARES meeting, one of the other members purchased a mid 2010 MacBook pro that had macOS 10.9 on it and could not figure out how to update it to anything and was totally frustrated. Told him that I can likely update it to macOS sonoma, and if not sonoma likely at least monterey using a patch tool, but it would take 2-3 days and my time is not free, likely would cost $150 and he said, **** it I'll just bite the bullet and go buy a new MacBook air like my son told me to in the first place and I will simply eat the loss of $150 on this and throw it in the garbage can. Told him I will gladly recycle it for you and if you want I'll give you $10.00 for it since you think it is trash. He said, no just take it, get it away from me. I had macOS sierra running on it before the end of the meeting, and downloaded high sierra on it when I got home last night and now using it with high sierra typing this now. Debating on installing macOS sonoma thru oclp on it as it has a 512gb ssd and 8gb of ram, and I have sonoma running on my late 2009 iMac that still has the spinner hd and 8gb of ram and it runs very nicely, need to find out if there will be any issues with keyboard or trackpad functioning on it with ventura or sonoma, thought I saw something about that when I did the iMac, but didn't have any issues at all. Wonder if sonoma is worth doing or something else like monterey? I do not think I will EVER go back to a windows machine ever, even if it causes difficulty with work productively, they can purchase what they need to share office documents and such, I will use my mac or let them terminate me, its just employment and life is not a job.

I have this same exact attitude. I have a decent ThinkCentre PC w/ Windows 10 for work, plenty of memory and is pretty fast. Does all my "Work Stuff" as it should. My boss offered anyone/everyone on our team (roughly 45 people) the opportunity to have a company purchased M1 MacBook Air to use "for work" and apparently I was thee only person to respond saying yes. So, I've been using that, setup in front of my work PC & Keyboard, instead, for roughly a year or so. Once screen (and smaller) as opposed to the two side by side, and then still needing to go thru a Citrix OneDesktop session (also Fullscreen) to do "Windows stuff".. I mean, a tool is just a tool, and some tools do multiple things 😁

That is the dream and I am so envious of that situation.

I keep finding things that I hate about Windows 11. My "favorite" is how they removed the option to make it stop grouping things together in the taskbar. "Just edit the registry with this third party tool to stop that" someone will say. Nope, not on a locked down work computer.
