by the way, the Apple support guy who promised to call me 2 days ago at 7:30pm, after speaking with engineering, did not call.
I shouldn't have added the optimised part charge, because that is not what I meant.it has nothing to do with optimised charging. I tested with optimized on/off, and with 80% on/off.
Also, after the first night I thought it turns off much later, during the night, because when I went to bed, it was on, when I woke up, it was off. So optimized charging was suspected first (by myself AND the Apple guy).
However, I then found out it turns off soon, after 30 - 60 seconds with no head or arm movement.
It MAY seem as if it's on anyway, but believe me, it turns itself off if you lie totally motionless.
The motion detection is very sensitive and actually a smart thing. However, if descriptions and Apple people claim that it SHOULD stay on, then I want it to be this way - and there should be a switch to turn motion detection on or off. And not default to motion detection as the only option if everything/everybody claims otherwise.
And during the day, at bright(er) light, it stays on forever, with white digits & letters instead of red. This might als mislead and make somebody think it stays on anyway.
No it doesn't.
it turns off 30 to 60 seconds after going in standby mode. Providing it's dark, and no movement detected. 100% reproducible, with different kinds of magsafe chargers (Apple & non Apple). And with a 100% healthy (According to Apple) 15 Pro.I shouldn't have added the optimised part charge, because that is not what I meant.
I was just wondering if your issue was like mine: It stays on all night, except it goes off at some point in the early hours of the night. And when I wake up the screen is off.
Is that what you are having as well? Ir yours goes to sleep immediately after putting it on standby mode.
They were claiming it wrongyes.
But user guide and Apple people claim that it should stay on.
Maybe to prevent it from draining your battery.... by accident?I like it very much, but why not when not charging? Dumb.
You were 100% correct. I tested it as well and was able reproduce it exactly as you described it. Now Apple has clearly admitted that as originally released it in fact did not always stay on. They released a fix in iOS 17.1 that includes a new setting in Standby. In 17.1 there is a new setting in Standby - The “Turn Display Off” - Never setting. It is a great addition to Standby but just noticed that when you do set it to Never “Night Mode” is automatically turned on and can’t be turned off. Disappointing IMO as I’m not a fan of the red tint display color. Would have preferred the ability to just keep the colors but reduce the brightness based on ambient light. Maybe they will add that to another update sometime in the future.it turns off 30 to 60 seconds after going in standby mode. Remember what I said previously: in the first night, I also believed it was on all night and went off in the early hours of the night. And found out in the nights after that it didn't stay on for longer than 60 seconds. Also, consider this, depending on the distance to your body/head/arm, it might turn on if you move your head to take a look, due to its sensitivity. So it might feel like it was on anyway, but it wasn't.
Honestly I wish they would just add a similar switch to the Always On Display so you can set it to stay always on at night when it’s on a MagSafe charger. I always thought it was pretty funny that Apple had a feature called the “Always On Display” that you could set to be never on but couldn’t actually set to be always on…🤣Not that fond of Standby Mode because when I'm lying sideways in bed looking at my phone, the phone is in landscape mode and if I wake it up from sleep, instead of unlocking it goes to Standby screen which I wasn't looking for.
I tested the new "never off" feature last night. You were 100% correct. I tested it as well and was able reproduce it exactly as you described it. I tested it last night as well. Seemed to work as advertised. I woke up twice during the night, once at around 1:30 and again around 4:30 and it was on both times...so far so good (I did not see any issues with Night Mode, the display was red all night). But when I woke up this morning around 7:45 it was off and did not come back on until I tapped the screen? I'll test again tonight but I honestly don't understand why Apple has such a hard time with making the screen STAY ON? "Turn Display Off Never" seems like it should be rather unambiguous...?I tested the new "never off" feature last night.
In the beginning, it stayed on, and instead of showing the entire display in this dim red tint, the watch hands were bright white, which was almost a little disturbing. But ok, I thought I can live with that. It did not turn off until I fell asleep after 15 minutes or so.
Surprisingly, when waking up in the morning, the display was off. It did not react nor turn on, on waving or any other movements (unlike pre-17.1., where a small turn of the head was sufficient to turn it on). Only when tapping at the screen, the clock display came back, this time completely dimmed and red !?
So it still doesn't work properly imho, and I really don't understand why Apple has not been capable to fix this finally, in particular as they did in fact try to improve standby mode by adding more options.
This night I will try "automatic" mode, to figure out if it behaves like the pre 17.1 - version.
Not for me; I don't use or charge my phone in the bedroom. It stays in the kitchen overnight.
I don't need an alarm as I wake up naturally about 15 mins prior, but I have a red digital one anyway.
It’s pretty useful during the day, too if you have your phone on charge. That’s why they didn’t call it Nightstand mode I suspect.
I had the same issue. Every night. on a 14 pro maxI tested it last night as well. Seemed to work as advertised. The new Standby setting that is supposed to make it stay on all night was just released in 17.1 yesterday...I had the same issue. Every night. on a 14 pro max
I don't need to use it as an alarm, I'm retired, but I do want to use it as a nightstand clock so it needs to stay always on...you would think Apple would be able to handle making that happen...LOLNot for me; I don't use or charge my phone in the bedroom. It stays in the kitchen overnight.

I’ve had it for a couple of weeks from the Beta and the RC, I have toggled always on. And it stays on for hours…. But at some point in the late hours of the night it turns off.The new Standby setting that is supposed to make it stay on all night was just released in 17.1 yesterday...
It didn’t make sense without the additional info, so thanks. Bottom line it seems like no one at Apple actually knows what ALWAYS ON means…🤣I’ve had it for a couple of weeks from the Beta and the RC, I have toggled always on. And it stays on for hours…. But at some point in the late hours of the night it turns off.
