Standby is brilliant if you have an iPhone 14/15 Pro, as you then have the option of keeping the display on. I have a 13 Mini and don't have that option so I use the Fliqlo app instead. I have then made an automation which opens Fliqlo and turns the brightness all the way down when I connect to my MagSafe nightstand. The app stays on all night so you can see what time it is. The watch makes one movement every minute, which apparently avoids burn ins.

I was happy they actually implemented "always on that actually means ALWAYS ON" in iOS17.1. But they force me to use the nightmode (red chars) instead which is a showstopper for me since I have slight eyeproblems and red is more or less useless to me. I hope they unlock this so I can have the text-color I want at night aswell, it can't be that many lines of code to fix? :)
Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of "Nightmode" either but thankfully it's not a show stopper for me. But you really aren't missing much at this point since the Standby screen still does not stay always on. You would think adding a setting called ""Turn Display Off - NEVER" would be as unambiguous as it gets but apparently not for Apple as even with that new setting turned on the Standby screen still turns off...LOL.

For a number of years I used an app called RedClock to do pretty much what Standby does... it does not support widgets from other apps, but it does time, weather, and functions as an alarm... with an "always on" option to keep the screen on while on a charger (plug or wireless)... it works in landscape AND portrait mode, and has multiple color options for the screen. I just checked and it's still in the App Store and it still works on my iPhone 14 Pro Max and iOS 17.1.

Even with 17.1? Annoying if that's the case..

Yes. The specific setting in Standby - ”Turn Display Off - Never” that was just added in 17.1, despite its seemingly unambiguous name still does not prevent the standby screen from turning off. I have tested it the last two nights and while it does keep the Standby screen on for almost the entire night it unfortunately does eventually turn off. Last night I put it on my MagSafe charger at around 11:20 PM and I was able to check it several times during the night and it did stay on most of the night. In fact I luckily checked it at 5:42 AM and it was on but when I looked again at 6:07 it was off and would not turn back on until I tapped the screen. Then it stayed on again until I got up around 8:15.

I had no issues last night with “turn standby off - never.” It’s exactly what I’ve wanted since the introduction of AOD. I am SO happy about it! Every time I looked at it last night it was on. It finally functions like a bedside clock and it should have been that way from the get go.

Unfortunately it's not just me or specific to my phone as their have been several folks reporting the exact same issue. And you might not even encounter it. As I described, mine stayed on both nights almost the entire night. Last night it stayed on from around 11:20 PM till at least 5:45 AM but when I looked again at 6:07 AM it was off.

Yup, I get that exact same behavior. The clock stays visible for almost the entire night. But when it's time to get up, the display is off. Every time. And apparently the angle of the phone is such that turning or lifting my head does not turn the display on.

In this situation the only way I have been able to get the screen to come back on is by tapping the screen. It doesn’t seem to respond to motion or anything else other than a tap on the screen.

I love it, it's like a clock that's visible in the night. It even acts as a small side lamp.

I wonder if they'll add any more features to it, but I don't see what else they could add.

The screen doesn't stay on at night. It will turn off. And when it detects motion; it will turn back on again
My 15 Pro Max does this correctly, but my wife’s 15 Pro Max will never come on when it detects motion, only when you touch the phone. I don’t get it, as she has the exact same settings as me and I can’t get her motion to wake to work.
