the lines for the ipad will not be big.

1st reason. not activation like the iphone.
2nd reason. lots of people ordered them.
3rd reason. the in store pick up splits the lines.
4th reason. best buy.
5th reason. its a band new product and it is no iphone.

Your Reason #4 is flawed. Best Buy will carry only 15 , 5 of each model, they will go in the first 5 minutes of store opening. If you think different then you are fooling yourself.

I think the lines will be huge. However I placed my order online.

I think it's clear that the Apple stores will be complete mob scenes. Whether there will be long lines/wait times is sort of another question. Will they have dedicated reservation pickup lines? Stock release lines? Mad scrum?

his first reason is flawed because activation only SLOWS THE LINE DOWN.

PS. why make a post like this? if you were to give a persuasive/informative speech, this would be horribly mediocre.

forgot to mention the 3gs line was mad small but it sold a lot due to the same reasons but the activation one.

Once again, I think some people forget that Apple is really good at marketing.

They WANT there to be lines. It creates the hype for the iPad for people just walking around (streets, malls). Apple stores are generally packed like crazy on the weekends, this weekend will definitely see insanity even with organized lines.

I am betting the only ones who get the iPad at the stores are people who ordered it weeks ago. I do not think they will have a large number of unsold iPads. Maybe a few. I am glad I ordered mine over the net to avoid the lines.

and? the activation keeps people in the lines and makes it longer.

regardless whatever you're talkin about, this thread is so irrelevant.

"activation keeps people in the lines"

WTF? obviously since they would want their phone to work.

you can keep reachin and we can go back and forth

what? did you just agree and disagree at the same time?

activation makes line go longer

a. cause it take a long time to activate.
and b. :apple: sucks at activating

the fact tat the ipad doesnt have activation cuts a ton of time thus making lines to move faster.

also they can take ipod salesmen that didnt know how to activate a iphone (but since the ipad doesnt need activation.) they can also help sell the ipad.

Apple also announced that all customers making iPad purchases in its retail stores will receive free Personal Setup service, which includes assistance from Apple staff with setting up email accounts on the device, loading applications, and other tasks.

That is purely optional, and I won't be taking part in it, and think the majority of others buying an ipad won't either.

I think most will just give them their credit card and take the unopened box and leave. Who wants to open up the entire box and have someone else help them set it up, when I think most people buying an ipad on day one already know how to do that, these are the hardcore apple people.

...

I guess, if you get there about a quarter til' the apple store closes. Of course no lines, because they'll more than likely all be sold out.

Yo, if you get there the time the apple store opens, if not a bit earlier. THERE WILL BE LINES, it may GO FASTER, obviously as there is not activation. But then people ask questions, they're giving HELP to people setting up the iPad.

so working at an Apple Store, you have different positions? "Activation Specialist" "iPod Specialist"?

1. Fair Play you're mostly right, though I do expect some people to want it to be activated in store.
2. Many people ordered, many reserved, many decided to take their chances on launch day. Second two sets of people makes for busy Apple Store.
3. Split lines get merged the busier the store gets. People will go to the line that seems to be moving quicker, which slows down other lines.
4. 15 Per store. Knowing that I'd take my chances at the Apple Store.
5. It's a brand new product. That's when you get queuing. People don't camp out to get a product that has been available for months, or even days. Brand new is when the queue happens.

actually this is just a rumor and has not been confirmed. i wouldn't be surprised if they got more then 5 units of each size.

All specialists are the same. I looked at my local store and they don't have genius/onetoone sessions in the morning on Saturday. I'm sure it'll be "all hands on deck". And as noted, they announced that there will be personal setup/workshops that could keep some individuals milling about.

Hell, I see lines at the Apple Store whenever I go, even without the iPad!

You know, if your thread title was more like "iPad lines will move faster than iPhone 3G/3GS lines", I think most people would agree with you.

But FWIW, Apple Stores don't have a position that only sells iPods, with no knowledge of how to activate iPhones. The sales positions that they do have (Specialist, Expert, and Business) all know how to activate iPhones.

Obviously there's no way to know for sure, but I think more people are going to take advantage of this than y'all want to admit. I do not think we (meaning people who are actually posting on these forums) are representative of the technical clued-ness of the average buyer. People are going to be giddy, the Apple reps are always sparkly and friendly (at least at my store), and some people are going to take advantage of the offer.

Meanwhile, the argument "there will be no lines because there is no activation" is disingenuous if you do not include the fact that there IS still a specific reason for people to stand around taking up rep facetime.

I agree, with the pre-order and reservation program I cannot foresee huge lines. Especially since you didnt have to pay to reserve one.

An average store will maybe have 20-30 people waiting out front (and mostly for that "free gift" which is probably like a $20 itunes card) when the store opens, and out of those people, probably only 5 didnt reserve.

I personally didnt reserve because I was on the fence about what model I wanted. I will probably head down there at about 10am and see if I can pick one up. If not, I will wait till the middle of the week.

I live in Phoenix and we have 6 apple stores and tons of Best buy locations (there is actually an apple store and a best buy 5 miles from my house 2 miles apart)

I can see longer lines outside of Best buy because there was no reservation program with the addition of the insurance you can buy for them that apple does not offer.

I hardly doubt Apple will let anyone wanting one on Saturday to go empty handed.

There is probably just as many for pick up as there was for reservation.

Those who were gunna wait in line are the ones who reserved from Day 1.

I hope for my own sake that you're right, but I suspect you're wrong. Just to be safe I'll be showing up around 6am.
