An average store will maybe have 20-30 people waiting out front (and mostly for that "free gift" which is probably like a $20 itunes card) when the store opens, and out of those people, probably only 5 didnt reserve.

Several weeks ago there was an article saying they were an average of 700 reservations per store. Do you really think less than 5% of those people will be picking up their iPads?

I'm 100% certain the lines at every store will be long enough to make the local news.

That's an interesting figure. @ 700 reserved per store, that works out to just over 155,000 iPads "sold" via the reservation process (222 store in the US). I wonder if that is factored into the 240,000 reported as "pre-ordered" or a totally separate figure.

I think the initial lines will be newsworthy.

But based on Apple opening the Genius Bar at my local store at 3PM that day, I'm guessing that they expect the lines to be fairly much gone by then.

the lines for the ipad will not be big.

5th reason. its a band new product and it is no iphone.

Good reason for while the lines will be big.

iPhone was great, but if you wanted one and were locked into your cell contract, you had to wait. iPad can be yours day one, no questions, no issues, just a buy buy buy!

Those numbers are separate. Most analysts have had a hard time estimating how many reservations will be sales.

There will be huge lines because not only is Apple selling the product, they are offering free setup for anyone who wants it.

Apple is promising free setup services for customers who purchase an iPad at one of its retail stores. The services includes e-mail configuration, application loading, "and more," Apple said Monday.

yes, APPLICATION LOADING.

Information Week

So, yep, long lines sound unavoidable to me.

I suspected they probably were. If I had to guess, I'd say 50% of the reservations will turn into sales. I imagine 30-40% of them are "contingency reservations" that people like me made, knowing that something would go horribly, terribly, fabulously wrong with the pre-order, and the other 10-20% will just be no-shows (lack of money, lost interest, changed mind, etc.).

the lines for the ipad will not be big.

1st reason. not activation like the iphone.
2nd reason. lots of people ordered them.
3rd reason. the in store pick up splits the lines.
4th reason. best buy.
5th reason. its a band new product and it is no iphone.

2) Lots of people reserved them too (est. 500-700 per store)
3) Split lines make the lines shorter but there is still the same # of staff to take payment for both lines.
4) BB is getting in 15 units. How does that effectively shorten the lines at Apple?
5) You are correct it is a brand new product and it is no iPhone, it's an iPad, but I don't see how that has anything to do with the lines.

Where's Waldo?

Yep, they'll be as long as the iPhone line I waited in.
The line went from here all the way to the end of the mall!
I was in the front :D

I just got home from our Apple store, and they told me that somewhere between 300-400 iPads had been reserved. They open at 9am, and I'll probably be out at the mall around 8am (they usually open McDonald's for the early morning mall-walkers.)

Since it's New Orleans, and not, oh, NYC or San Francisco, I wouldn't expect the lines to be insane...MAYBE 50 people or so when they open (which is a lot of people, but not the 200+ I would expect in larger markets.)

Should be fun, can't wait :)

5. It's a brand new product. That's when you get queuing. People don't camp out to get a product that has been available for months, or even days. Brand new is when the queue happens.

which sold more. the 2g iphone or 3g?

That means diddly squat. The iPhone was a brand new device and interface. People know how to use iPads already, because of the iPhone.

You're points are as weak as your username implies.

so i guess the fact that the ipad is a brand new device means nothing?

I'm expecting to pull up at the mall around 8:30am. Briskly walking towards the apple store turning a corner and seeing a pack of ipad hungry people with coffee in their hands.

*le sigh*

It's going to BE PACKED by 10-11am, and all day.

I hope more people in my area preordered to ship...

If not, packed. Which will be anyway. Mines always filled with people there. Just hope at 9am, not so much.

It will be packed, I didn't think it would be that crowded for the iPhone 3G but wow was I wrong. I went into my mall (Kenwood Mall Cincinnati, OH) and was shocked that the line was all the way down the mall. I had to wait like 4 hours in line. It was insane. That's why as soon as I saw that you could pre order and have it shipped to your house I quickly chose that option. Now I won't have to worry about them running out or having to wait in line for hours upon hours. I'll be lounging on my porch drinking my morning coffee waiting for the UPS man to drop off the best purchase I have ever made.

I camped out for xbox 360 at costco on launch. Got there at about 6am (opened at 9am) and it was long already when I got there.

Froze my ass off..

For iPad, I'm REALLY excited. It's been on my mind since keynote... I'm on par, sometimes even more excited for it than I was for xbox 360..

I'm starting to think I'll get to the mall earlier around 8:00am on the dot. Have a peak. If there's no one there or a couple, I'll come back half hour later.

I'm excited too, but I don't know if it's more getting one or the anticipation of getting one.

Yeah I camped out for every system launch since PS2. Luckily the only one I had to camp outside in the cold was for the original Xbox and the Wii. I stayed in a 24 Hour Walmart for about 10 hours for the PS2, and got lucky and won a raffle to buy a 360 at launch from Meijer at midnight. I've learned my lesson though, next system that comes out I am pre ordering the minute you can. Even though it is kinda fun talking it up with other people in line about what you are all waiting for, I'd rather be at home comfortably knowing I am guaranteed one.

I'm almost as excited for the iPad as I was for the 360 as well. Luckily I tried talking myself out of wanting an iPad until a few days before they started taking pre orders. I didn't even watch the Keynote until the day before they started taking pre orders. After I saw a couple hands on videos of it on Youtube I knew I had to get one so I immediately punched in my credit card on the first day the website started taking pre orders. The wait is driving me nuts. I got my shipping number today. I'm pretty stoked. I signed up for a free trial of Netflix so I could watch movies and TV shows on my 360 to make the time go quicker.
