Excellent analysis. I believe this scenario to be the most likely one. I expect to be able to walk into an Apple Store on Tuesday and leave with an MBA.

I believe that just about everyone's ship date will change. Based on what I've seen here and my own order, the ship date is 3 weeks after the order date. This syncs with the promise of 2 to 3 weeks.

While I don't believe anyone's has shipped yet, I do believe it is imminent. All the big sites released their reviews yesterday and based on Apple's previously releases, the product hits store shelves within a few days.

The reason why all the reviews come out the same day is because they are embargoed. Apple sends them the equipment early with their commitment that they won't publish until Apple says they can. Apple wants the reviews to be out just before the product as part of their grand marketing plan.

I'd be surprised if they didn't ship by Sunday (or Tuesday at the latest as that is 2 weeks). I'd also be surprised if every order wasn't shipped the same day despite what your ship date states, because if they'd already sold out, the Apple Store wouldn't still say 2-3 weeks.

My MP shipped from China on a Monday night their time and I was surprised to see it here in Virginia at 10am Tues morning our time.

This is partly due to the time difference. They are 13 hours ahead and across the dateline. If you fly back direct you actually can basically arrive when you leave.

I actually have gone to Shenzhen (alas not to visit Apple, most of whose stuff is hidden away in places like the Foxconn compound) and so am always mindful of this.

Yeah. Also with the shipping times, it will typically come faster. The cost is the same when sending out from China. If it has to go, it has to go. There are only 2 issues: 1. Occasionally there is high demand to send stuff out of Shenzhen and people with discounted volume rates may agree to delay normal shipments on more packed flights for a few hours or a day as part of their price discount. 2. Slightly slower delivery from Fedex depending on how you asked for it to ship. (But in a way, they are still sending by plane and so it is almost like they choose to slow down as an excuse to charge people more for a good - a classic "price discrimination" marketing strategy for Fedex).

Engadget and Gizmodo got their first units. It seems like Apple deleted the thread "shipping status" from the discussion.apple.com-forums.

Woo?

Yep, the thread has definitely been deleted...I was subscribing to it. Hmmmm....

Well you may want to check your facts first as the MBA itself weighs 1.36 kg. So add to that product packaging, charger, other studd, plus shipping packaging 4 kg is perfectly reasonable, where as 0.4 kg (the weight of half a loaf of bread/ or 3.5 lighter then the actual product) is not.

Just noticed that Amazon lists the shipping weight as 7.2 pounds.

Need an external drive to install Windows

So, Uncle Walt is saying you cannot install Windows wirelessly - you have to have the superdrive. That's a problem if true. What about a disc image on a USB-connected external drive - might that work? Any thoughts?

I'm not sure about Final Cut Studio, but why would you want to use a MBA for editing in FCP?? I've got my 17" MBP for editing in the field and while at conferences, I've got a brand new Mac Pro coming to me for work. I do a lot of video editing and graphic work, and needed more power. I've been pushing my MBP to it's limit's. Now for school work, general papers to be written, email, and general day to day stuff I've got an MBA coming to me.

So has anyone else seen there's as having been shipped yet?? Also I've got the 1.8 ghz with nothing added on or any custom configurations, and it's telling me that it's CTO. Any ideas???

I am pretty sure it will not run on a MBA. I am pretty sure that one requirement is a dedicated video card.

my bet is that the early adopters will get screwed by means of getting a product plaqued with some major deficiency..

I hope I'm right because that is my bet and I'm not an early adopter no more..

yea i was surprise too
however not the newest generation still not bad
it's not like we expect it to be crazy fast

engadget's benchmark was interesting too however
we all know a 2+Ghz new macs will be faster than a 1.6ghz macbook air..

Ya but none of them will have a faster hdd than the macbook air's ssd drive. I want to see some benchmarks of the 1.8 version with ssd.
