Got my Jot Script today. Haven't had time to play with it properly yet, but first impressions are not good

Looking forward to hearing more.

What programs are you using it with?

What styli have you used before?

Note shelf was recently updated for native Jot Script support. It's a billion times better than penultimate.

Keep in mind the script is best for handwriting - only buy it if you plan in using it for that. At least for now.

It's not great for drawing.

Tried Noteshelf, Penultimate, and unsupported apps.

Used a few dozen styli before, all types and brands. My daily driver is a Wacom Bamboo Duo.

The problem with this stylus is that it's inaccurate. Without an app that compensates for the offset center, you'll be writing quite a bit off the actual tip, which is annoying. Noteshelf doesn't even seem to have a way to compensate for this, Penultimate does, but doesn't work well if you, like me, change writing position based on situation. Nowhere I've seen does Adonit say anything about how off center this thing is without software that compensates for it, and I frankly think it's outright deceptive.

Have you used the Adonit Jot Touch? If so, how does it compare?

The Jot Touch used with GoodNotes is the first stylus/app combination that actually allows me to write long-hand with no zoom and few stray marks and no interruption. It is also extremely accurate between the tip and what is written on the page. My hope is that the Jot Script would work as well as the Touch without the negatives of the disc on the tip.

I hated the first Adonit stylus I bought so much that I instantly swore off the disc tip type of stylus. I had hoped this would be different.
The Script feels more accurate, but when I started comparing my actual writing with a simple Wacom Bamboo it wasn't really. I think my biggest gripe is that no matter what, it still won't be even half as good as zoombox writing, and I've gotten so used to that method of writing that I'm not that bothered to keep doing it if the issues the Script show is the alternative

Interesting that experiences can be so different. :)

Was your disc stylus active (bluetooth) or not?

This combination is for me almost as good as my Surface Pro with the active digitizer (and actually better in some ways). It's extremely accurate.

Hello everyone!

I see that some people want more informations about the new Jot Script. I recently made a video to show my friends what it looks like, but I think you could be interested too.

Also, if you want to see how handwriting works for me with the Jot Script, you can check out this most recent video I posted.

I hope you won't see this as a spam, I'm honestly just trying to help as much as I can and share what I know. I hope you will find this review useful.

It was not. Would have loved to try a jot touch 4, but after the script, im never going near adonit again

Can you sum up the issues?

The one big issue I can't forgive is that it writes off center. Had it not done that everything would have been different, but that's a problem you cannot fix with software as even SDK integration means this is an issue you need to actively compensate for, which doesn't work 100%, and you cannot just use it in any app like a normal stylus (because of the inaccuracy). Fairly hard to forgive a stylus whose main selling point is accuracy and that in reality is less accurate than other styli in most situations

Hmm, I can tell you that the Jot Touch is extraordinarily accurate - uncanny almost. In GoodNotes I'm able to write as if the screen is the page of a journal, longhand, with no zooming, filling every line with text at about the same size as on a sheet of real paper. It's even accurate at the edges of the screen, which is not the case at all for the Surface Pro.

I'm beginning to think that the pressure sensitivity, which I didn't think I was interested in, plays a role here, as other stylii I try in this app without it make very fat and/or unnatural characters - either the line is fat enough to be easy to write, or it's so skinny that it looks fake. The pressure sensitivity seems to fix this and make the writing look natural.

If you use GoodNotes, and want an accurate stylus, this may be worth another look for you (from somewhere with a good return policy). I'm also amazed at how good my diagrams can come out - and because of the ability to pinch-zoom the page combined with the accuracy of the stylus - I can even get tiny text to be completely legible.

This combination is pretty much what I've been waiting for on the iPad since day 1.

Would you mind doing a video? I would be very interested in seeing a true demonstration video of this. Only found some random videos, most of which from Adonit, regarding the Touch 4 for note taking. My primary (only) use is notes, some in Good Notes and some in Goodreader

Well, if you'll excuse the extremely amateur attempt. :)

Hard to hold my iPhone while writing with the other hand.

I have a number of pages full of text written like this.

Here's the link as that embed doesn't seem to be working for me

Interesting to see, thank you. It looks accurate, but not really accurate enough to be very interesting to me personally. I know you were wielding a camera there, but the whole disc thing seemed to slow you down quite a bit - it needing to adjust for each word. I can write much faster with zoom box writing, more accurately, and with essentially any stylus.

The speed is way slow compared to my normal motion because I am trying to keep the stylus framed in the video while writing as you requested to see the accuracy of the stylus. Every word or so I have to glance over to the camera. Writing with this setup is not really any slower or less accurate than on my Surface Pro, and the gap between the tip and what actually appears on the screen is actually less.

You may be right that any stylus works well with zoom box writing. I am certainly far more accurate with it, but overall a bit slower when I am not working on the entire page all at once. It's a work-around that I don't care for overall, and that's why I like this setup - it allows me to interact with the page as if it's a full sheet of paper.

I agree with zhenya: an Adonit stylus, combined with GoodNotes, that makes a perfect teem.

I've watched some of your videos- nicely done. Is the Jot Script currently your favorite stylus? One thing I really like about the Jot Touch paired with Goodnotes is that the palm rejection works really well when paired - I don't have to use those adjustable palm rests when using the full screen (no zoom box). Does this work just as well with the Jot Script?

I guess I'll probably be ordering one of these to try too if it's as good as the Touch without the hassles of the disc...

Yes, I would say it is my favorite, for these different reasons:
  • it could be more precise, and I think that can be achieved through the SDK, so there's room for improvment;
  • I fear less for my screen than with the Jot Pro, who tends to leaves tiny scratches;
  • the feeling is better than the Jot Script, it feels more like a ballpen;
  • it has palm rejection, whereas the Jot Pro doesn't.
Palm rejection in GoodNotes is great, even if it uses an outdated SDK. The new SDK should be added in december, and I look forward to it.

If you want to know more about the Jot Script in real life, stay tuned: I will definitely do another review in a few days or weeks to talk about it with the benefit of hindsight.

@Cptnodegard I have very good news for you about GoodNotes: I'm just testing a beta, and a new feature allows the precision I was waiting for. Finally, the line appears at the end of the Jot Script. This is a huge enhancement! Now I want to use the beta all the time…

Since a few weeks I am using now the Livescribe 3 and it works perfectly for me. It is just the workflow I have dreamed of. I can write in meetings with the Livescribe 3 on paper with or without connected iOS device and after the meeting I send the whole pdf with the notes to my email and/or evernote.

The most important sections of the handwritten text I can in the Livescribe+ application on my iPad simply translate into normal text and create a new calender or todo entry.
it is so simple.

And if I compare it to the youtube demos of any stylus writing directly on the iPad I can not understand how this should be fast enough to make notes in meetings without disturbing everybody.

I am so happy that I have found the perfect workflow now!
Good luck to everybody to be more efficient!

Here's basically a demo and "review" of the Jot Script from my point of view: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeriMMGtCd8

Yes, that looks very problematic and not like the other reviews I've seen. I wonder if you got a bum unit as some reviewers have reported.

The thing I will point out is that with the Touch I am writing at basically the same size and accuracy as you when you use the zoom box, but I'm writing full screen. The fact that it can do that with very few issues is why I'm excited about this stylus.

One problem I can see coming is that the file sizes in Goodnotes are going to get out of hand pretty quickly. 10 pages of written text and the notebook PDF is already 13MB!

I doubt I got a bum unit, as a lot of the time it's the software that's acting up. Also, I wouldn't rule out differences between 9.7" iPads and 7.9" ones. Then again, maybe it is indeed broken. Sent the link for the video to Adonit so they can judge for themselves

The thing about zoom box writing though is that it's adaptable. When I grade papers I add comments between lines of machine written text, font size 12, line spacing 1.5. That's a level of accuracy that not even real pens are good at, let alone digitizer pens or any capacitive stylus. A more accurate stylus would then not be able to eliminate the need for a zoom box, not for me at least. The reason I wanted a Script though was that I had hoped it would give that extra accuracy without it being a compromise, but it doesn't seem to be.

been in contact with Adonit CS and there's nothing wrong with my Script. apparently the offset is on the device side and is there because of finger use, and so the accuracy of the Script becomes an issue. seems they're not impressed with Penultimate's integration, right now. anyways, turns out that the Script is fairly accurate in landscape mode, unpaired. ironically the offset fix messes up the natural accuracy in landscape mode. Same situation on my S3 android phone. So bottom line is that until someone less crappy than evernote/penultimate comes along and integrates the SDK properly, the best result seems to be from landscape use with the pen unpaired. in which case it's actually impressively accurate!...just wish it didn't require landscape
