Just hold the power button and volume down. Make sure you have screen scroll capture on in the settings ( a great trick which allows you to screenshot off page image!)

https://www.androidcentral.com/how-take-screenshot-galaxy-note-8

Nice! Button placement a little awkward but I'll live .. editing / drawing over it after is pretty neat

Easier is just use the palm to swipe the from left or right

I tried that and saw it demonstrated, seems like the most inconvenient gesture known to man :)

Anyone know how to accept a meeting (Outlook) invite in the Samsung email app? I get an email with an attached .vcs file which I open and it pops up in the calendar app. There's an option to add it to the calendar but no option to actually accept the request so although it shows in my calendar the meeting organiser never sees that I've accepted which sort of defeats the object.

Outlook app behaves a little differently, I get the option to accept via the RSVP button, but the organiser still never gets an update to say I did so.

Answered my own question here .. behaves beautifully when inviting outlook.com accounts, me.com not so much. Time to start phasing out the me.com email I think. Sad times ... end of an era

..things are getting a bit petty now, but this annoyed me.

Using Samsung eMail app, Samsung Calendar app. I have multiple email accounts configured and setup to view 'all inboxes'. I receive a new meeting request, which shows in the lock screen as an email notification. I double tap to go to the invite, which switches my view to inbox for that account only. I accept the invite and tap back to go back to my inbox, then I have to go and select all inboxes again. Annoying. Can the calendar app not deal with the invite without futzing with my email client? Isn't that how iOS deals with stuff?

..anyone know if you can improve copy&paste somehow? It's way behind iOS with regards to ease of selection and not having your finger blocking what you're trying to highlight.

Cheers!

What's the problem? Press and hold then drag highlight. You have the magnifying window just above your finger-tip to show the text underneath your finger.

If you use Samsung keyboard, you can opt for cursor control (instead of swipe type) then you can control cursor like Iphone keyboard using 3D-touch. Hit th shift and you can select text while moving cursor

Eh? Cut and paste is excellent. Just keep your finger on a word then let go. You will get two blue teardrops which you can use to select away to you're hearts content.

This combined with the excellent swipe to copy/cut/post functions in Swype make for the easiest and quickest text editing I've ever experienced on a phone. Miss it literally every day on my 7+ and is one of the main reasons I'm considering going Android again.

Woah, everyone loves C&P on android it seems. Maybe it's me or the apps I'm using:

- Using Samsung eMail app to try and select a number (tracking number) that's already helpfully underlined, it will not let me select it, only tap it which overlays into a phone app - not what I want
- The select book end things cannot be controlled as far away from the text as iOS so hard to see what you're doing
- No magnifying glass? Guess that's a patent thing

Cheers!

I had a go at this on my phone. I think for number sequences, samsung throw you into the phone app automatically.

The tip here is to select text before or after and then adjust book ends accordingly.

The clipboard setting is great as well (select the gear wheel in the samsung keyboard)

If you actually read the entire thread you'd appreciate that this is a 'warts and all' experience from someone who has used iOS since the first iPhone. There is no bias, just posting as I find stuff that annoys me.

The perception that every Android device is junk, stuffed with bloatware and used by the 'unwashed' (like me I now discover, shocked) was something I harboured for a long time but things have changed - they are now very competent alternatives bolstered by the improvements made by other service vendors like MS.

Niggles aside I really like the S8, the native Samsung apps (Apple could learn a thing or two about some of them frankly - looking at you Safari) and the fact I can use any service I like on it without a hissy fit. In fact I could have saved myself a lot of time just trusting the stock Samsung apps from the off, as I would have done with Apple, but my perception was that they were junk - just like yours.

Bixby is a fail currently but I'm loving having a hardware button that I can do stuff with .. single press brings up Sonos, double press bring up the baby monitor - thank you Samsung :)

Don't let these negative trolls dissuade you. I very interested in your perspective especially given that I'm trying to convince a coworker to give Android a shot. I've been an iPhone user in the past and I'm typing this on a Note 8. I actually thoroughly enjoy threads like this. Also if you haven't tried the "swype" style texting method, you should. It's much faster and very fluid once you get the hang of it. Just pay attention to your predictive text.

Thanks all :)

Largely happy with how everything is working now. Disabled smartwake in favour of the always on screen which shows minimal notification info (which I like) and date/time permanently - again, nice feature gain over iOS. Really happy with all the shortcut options on the home screen too ... anyone know if you can map double home button click?

So far I have:

Bixby: 1 click Sonos, 2 clicks security camera app .. long click brings up some bixby 'you're in voice context' warning thing in front of the app (Shazam) .. any idea how to get rid of that?

Home: 1 tap = app switcher (I know the actual button is to the left but it's more akin to iOS and easier to use with one hand), 3 taps = one handed mode (again made to work a little like iOS)
Screen: 2 taps = Expand quick settings (means it's easy to get at notifications and main settings one handed), swipe up = app drawer, swipe down = app search (just like iOS)

..still getting used to the edge panels, nice feature but struggle to use it one handed sometimes.

Other stuff:

- Really like having a file system and being able to download files to a set tangible location
- Onedrive integration is a bit weak compared to iOS which is a shame, find myself working from google drive more as a result

..and some questions:
- What do people do for insurance on these phones? I see Samsung do an Apple Care alternative called Mobile care in the UK, but that is only on new phones so I'd probably start this with the next phone. Replacement screens look pricey compared to iPhones
- Is there an equivalent to the full phone backup iOS offers? As in lose my phone and restore it to EXACTLY how it was with email accounts / launchers etc.. all in tact 100%?

It seems to me, and I know I've only had it a few days that Samsung/Android are so close to nailing the experience and taking on Apple properly.

Now I've got the phone working as I'd like I'm going to focus on playing with my Gear S3 that I bought to partner with it, initial impressions there are:

- Rotating bezel is great, I do like buttons and dials thought just like I do with my cameras
- Feels like a watch, AW feels a bit like a toy
- Takes standard straps without adapters although swapping will not be as easy admittedly
- Good, if not amazing, battery life
- Always on display!!!
- Widgets aren't bad, most need you to use the stock app on the phone to work properly but thankfully as I've said already they're pretty good
- Watch face options OOB are a bit poor, but plenty available on the store/3rd party

Choice is good and there is definitely life after Apple it seems.

-use an alternative file manager, such as solid explorer, or even the one drive app. I haven't really noticed a problem using one drive. I can even access in the main Android file browser. I think it requires a few clicks?

-i don't know what Samsung offers in the UK. There is Samsung premium here in the US.

-android itself does a back up of your device. Your Samsung account also does a full back via Samsung cloud. It's is in the setting. I don't know the full details of which have does which, but when I switched from the s8+ to the note 8, I followed the prompts, and my phone came out just like my s8, settings and all.

-if you use an alternative launcher, like nova, you can backup the launher layout and settings that way as well.

Seems complicated....it is not. Just check it out.

Time for a bit of an update, been using it as main phone the entire time

It is not as smooth as iOS. Period. Anyone who says otherwise (with same HW/ same OS) is kidding themselves. Some of it is even hard to explain, but it just is. The screen to body ratio is great .. I couldn't live with a larger phone so that is everything to me. The lack of proper home button (the embedded one is OK, but not as good as a proper one as some apps think you're clicking even when you're pressing to go home .. Google photos seems really bad at that for some reason - I'm hiding on screen buttons, wouldn't be as much of an issue if I wasnt) is annoying but a price to pay for screen. Apps aren't as good, some are plain poor.

That's about it really. If I'm brutally honest if iOS ran on hardware like this then I'd be a happy camper. I cannot go back to a smaller screen and I cannot tolerate a larger handset so that only really leaves me with the X and most of the shortcomings on the S8 are really imposed due to the lack of buttons and borders on the front screen so no doubt the X will suffer equally. And it has those stupid ears. And no touchID. I love the S3 watch, it's almost been my biggest surprise. Android Auto is also very nice.

So in short the S8 is here to stay :)

Some issues that others might be able to help with:

- Sometimes spotify opens itself when I unlock the phone, pretty sure I've not hit the app accidentally. Anyone else?
- Is there a way to get basic spotify controls on the AOD/lock screen for quick access to skip track/volume etc?
- Plex. If I'm on wifi but it has no internet (like my f*cking hotel) it shows my local library but when I play anything it just says 'loading' and never plays. If I disable wifi it plays fine. Anyone else get that? Doesn't happen on iOS. Will raise on the plex forums anyway

thanks for reading :)

As an avid switcher as of late after being with iOS since 2007, I can say that the only thing holding me back from switching fully is messaging.

Messaging on Android to iOS folks is terrible. More so with group chats and MMS. If you have an iPhone and group chat thread, then switch to Android, forget about receiving any messages on that thread ever again. Using a third party is not an option with my circle of friends, nor is deleting the thread and restarting. Its stupid that that has to be the fix for this bug. After a dozen Androids over the last year this sole issue prevents me from switching. I had a NOte 8 last week and found myself back on my 8 Plus because I wasn't receiving my family's messages. Its pretty sad and I hate that something so simple would be a deal breaker for a lot of people. This issue is well known. Have a look at reddit, XDA, etc. No fixes. Just kind of a deal with it type of thing.

My husband and I came to the same conclusions as you after about a year on S7 Edges and S8+, all totaled up.

Sorry I don’t have the Spotify issue. I don’t use Spotify really except on Alexa/Amazon Echo these days. I don’t use Plex. My husband has found some amazing Watch faces on the Samsung store.

I’m getting a Pixel 2 and I will miss not being able to use the Samsung store for it. But my S8+ is still around so I can still theme it.

I hear that “pure Android” on the Pixels is a much smoother, faster experience, which is why I want to try it out. But there are drawbacks to be discovered, too. Samsung does spoil people with amazing features. Which is why I won’t get rid of my Samsungs or vow to leave them forever. They are clearly working hard to keep smoothing the software experience while still maintaining their customizations. They’re getting better. On their store there are developers who seem to develop just for Samsung, so check them out, too. iOS app quality is still generally better, but with Apple sort of fragmenting now between the radical design of the X and the more traditional designs of the iPhone 8 and iPads, I am not sure how that will impact Apple’s traditional advantages. Maybe not at all. Perhaps some developers will comment.

The bug is on Apple’s side and theirs to own and fix, and clearly to their advantage to not fix it. So don’t expect this to be fixed anytime soon, if ever.

It’s the reason I stick with two lines and two phones. Not many people can afford to do that, but it’s a luxury I decided to indulge in for the next couple of years or so. I suppose someday I’ll pick a side and stick to it, and move on to drones or robotics or trains for a hobby, but for now I’m having a lot of fun goofing off with iOS and Android.

Love to hear how you get along with the Pixel2 (which size?) .. the non plus is out for me due to screen - no SD card storage either? I need to look at specs again.
