use one as a computer case for a PC?

Several years back, I sold a dual processor G5 I had laying around to a guy doing just that. He said he found himself in need of a Windows machine, but he couldn't bring himself to look at one in his home office. I think, at the time, there was even a program that made the Windows desktop look like a OSX desktop. I got fifty bucks for it on Craigslist.

I think it reasonable to assume her statement was made for those considering a cMP to run modern software. Focusing on the edge cases if foolish.

Quibble on dude... I (and many others, as I mentioned) am running modern software!

I need a computer that runs the modern software I use today efficiently and economically, and the 5,1 appears likely to continue to fill my requirements for years to come.

This always winds me up, I've seen dual trays listed for £500-£700, and then a few rows below a complete system (with lower spec CPUs) for £400-£600.

Even once you plow £200 into CPUs and some other upgrades it doesn't make much sense to buy the trays, even single trays with a 6 core Westmere seem to fetch £200-£300, and I've never even paid that for a complete single CPU 4,1/5,1.

I just picked up another dual 4,1 at the weekend locally for £240, even if I slide that tray out with the E5520s still in it and bung it on eBay I could probably make a profit and still have the rest of the machine to part out...spend £100 on some 5680s or 5690s and It'd sell for double again. Madness!
Where did you get it for 240? I'm on a semi-active lookout for a good 5,1. I already have an RX570 for it, a spare SSD and a W3580 processor, so all I'd need is the slowest 5,1 with just a decent amount of RAM.

local seller via eBay, I keep an eye out for when/if they pop up at a decent price as it never hurts to have spares for these machines!

Because this thread is about my cMP... how much do you all think I could get for it?

if you live in the UK gumtree is the best place to look (the prices are better).
ram is cheep on ebay, it's all just pulled server ram and works fine.

@AidenShaw im with you for doing real work, macprofor fun/hobby is still fun to me.
but relay i7 8700 and newer is just so much faster

The Performance & Power Efficiency Of The Core i7 990X vs. Core i9 9900K
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=intel-990x-9900k&num=1
from the last page-
'The 990X was idling at around 98 Watts compared to 52 Watts for the new Coffeelake refresh system. The average load power draw was 172 Watts that dropped down to 120 Watts with the 9900K while the peak power consumption was also a big difference at 225 Watts versus 164 Watts. Keep in mind as well that the coming soon Core i9 9900X is a more comparable test target to the Core i7 990X given the more similar launch prices and being part of the EE/X-Series line-up. The 9900K by comparison has a launch price about half that of what the 990X was shipping for back in 2011. Once the i9-9900X is out, I'll gladly repeat this comparison against the i7-990X. Anyhow, for those curious about the 990X vs. 9900K with how the Intel performance and power efficiency has improved from Westmere to Coffeelake, hopefully you found this data interesting one way or another.'

so the new cpu is over 2 times faster and uses less power never mind AVX
'With the Himeno pressure solver that benefits a lot from today's processors with AVX, the 9900K is 2.4x faster and a 3.36x difference on power efficiency'
from page 3

plus for video work if you use adobe the iGPU is handy

The dropped support by Intel for microcode updates and Apple for OS releases was a deal-breaker for me, and the machine is just so old now with so many band-aid updates to keep it going. I was thinking about selling it anyways since the new one was coming out so the dropped support made the decision easy. I'm comfortable letting it become a part of Macintosh history. I commend those who want to hold onto their cMPs though, even though I think that's kinda silly stubbornness and being cheap. I loved it. Favorite computer I ever had. Hopefully I'll enjoy the 7,1 even more.

my G5 and 3,1 will make a nice coffee table and my 5,1 may end up a storage box in the next year or so (not 24/7 use) and legacy software box.
or my 3,1 as a hack box maybe.
G5 I want for history while I can.

I'm in the market for a 5,1 for personal use. I'd prefer to get one from an MR memenber as they're more knowledgable and skilled at upgrades, etc. If you're considering getting rid of one p lease contact me via pm.
Thanks,
Kev

Not sure if I'm allowed to post the link here, but I've re-listed my cMP with a few more additions (Radeon VII / 1080ti, more SSDs).

I just bought an 8 core 5,1 for $150 a month ago. Added RX460 and two X5680s, plus a new 1TB SSD and sold my single hex- core 4,1>5,1 for more than I paid for it all. My duplicate studio machine is now ready to swap out at a moment's notice.

Thanks MacRumors for helping me to be an informed consumer.
