You really think that a public defender is worse than not having a lawyer at all?

No! How on earth did you think I imply that?

We were talking about free versus paid. I said sometimes "free" is not the right choice, which implies that I meant "paid" is sometimes the right choice. I never said "none" is the right choice.

Lost! 75% of my friends want me to buy a Galaxy Note!

The answer is obvious...ALWAYS do what your friends tell you to do. They really know everything!

Never think for yourself or make decisions without their approval! You could make a mistake somewhere in your life, and your friends would laugh and mock and say "told you so"...and no one can live with that!

OK, so much for snarky stuff. Decide what you need, study up on your options as best you can, and decide what is best for you. If you think about it, that's not a bad approach to a lot of things you will confront in your life...;)

My advice to everyone is:
- if you love doing illegal things like copying music and movie straight from the tablet with a computer or specific software, then Samsung is for you (plug and play, drag and drop)
- if you are happy to settle for something that is slightly complicated (always need itunes on a computer to copy and transfer stuff) but a far superior, quality product, then iPad it is

Lots of brilliant apps are only available on iPad. Like djay and vjay.
Go with your practical reasons.

Majority of people I know have iPads but because of the iTunes on a computer story, they basically use it for games and internet surfing :D

 This is what I am now. Never had a tablet before. A friend gave me a Samsung Ace II X phone he had for free after renewing his "vows" to phone company. He hates smartphones so the small white thing is with me now. Since I never had an iPhone or iPad, I just can say it's working flawlessly. Got used to Android 4.0. Guess what: now I'm craving for a tablet and...all my friends have Samsung Note or Tab. Reviews and comparisons on the Web point in the same direction: you decide between the opened system Android or the closed one iOS. Between a 3 star construction and a 5 stars (Apple). Learn to let go of the extra SD card, the mini USB port, the Widgets and the Sylus pen. All arguments my friends have. I have a late 2012 27 iMac. In a nutshell and straight talk only, what will the 200$ premium for a 32 Gig iPad Air will buy me? I'm no gamer, no SMS maniac, no YouTube and Netflix addict. Apple or Samsung, I would mostly browse the Web, read papers and do photo stuff since I'm a semi-pro photographer. Don't judge: I really don't know what to do. Extra storage and S-Pen are a bonus.:confused:

With friends like that, who needs frenemies? Good luck with your note.

14 days to love Android or not

Hello again. Last Monday, I bought a Tab 3 8in at 229$ CDN. I wanted an iPad mini Retina with the same amount of storage (16g). Was 420$. Decided to give the Tab a try. Played with iPad and Tab for almost 30 minutes at Staple's. Now After 5 days, I am comfortable enough with Android 4.2.2. Screen is as beautiful as iPad Mini but transitions are inferior. Mini is faster when compared with a side by side Tab 3. Became familiar with the widgets and the Google and Samsing stores. But not the polish of Apple Store. I have 7 days left to decide if I keep the Tab or trade it for an iPad. For now I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the settings and fiddlings and customization of the Tab. Not used to that much customization. Have to be careful. Syncing with my iMac is horrible and nearly pointless. If I keep the Tab, I'm surely saving money to by the newest iPad coming this year may it be a 12 inch or a refreshed 9.1. But what I'm stuck with is the question: what makes the Tab 3 200$ less than the Mini or what makes the Mini 200$ more? Right now, I can't asnwer this riddle.

Longevity makes the iPad much better value, above all others. And the A7 chip is a beast.

I couldn't agree more, having a small Samsung tablet from a phone vendor promotional offer. The really useful memory is the one that is there upfront, so the possibility to insert an SD-card looks nice to have some stuff ... but is way overrated when you want to do something with that stuff.

I couldn't agree less. Android isn't bloated at all. Android is 200MB before install. It's all the crap that companies load on top that is bloated and slows down the experience.

On my LG G2 I am using less than 4GB for Cyanogen ROM + all the software that I use. I still have 20.2GB free

I have the rMini and a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014. Extremely satisfied with the best of both worlds. And they both complement my Galaxy S4 nicely.

Well, the point I agreed with, was that the storage extension possibility with an SD-card should not be overrated. Are your 20.2 GB free on your SD-card? How much is the "basic" capacity of your storage? I can tell you: the 8 GB factory-stated on my promotional tablet are just eaten up and the thing is a grocery of warning messages about "insufficient storage issues", and adding a 16GB micro-SD card inserted does not resolve the issues.
That companies do load a lot of stuff I don't care for, which indeed bloats the tablet ... I couldn't agree more with you. So, regardless of the words, I think we are not that far apart.
Anyway, thank you for your reaction.

Bloated software on my Tab 3? Yes but...

Hi again and thanks so much for your comments. One month with my Samsung Tab 3 and I don't regret the hardware but I miss so much true Apple approved software. I was told of all the crap in the Droid world. Didn't believe it but live in the Android ecosystem for one month only and it quickly becomes a fact of life. I'm not very used to searching three days for a simple Note pad that will allow me to draw too. There are hundreds of them out there but...ugly and uglier and bloated with unecessary features. I truly love the Tab 3 8 inca form factor. Snappy enough for me, beautiful display but a real pain when it comes to software. I spent some time searching this memo app and, true, the ones I like were for iPad. Conclusion: when Google Store or Samsung Apps or else will offer the same quality apps as the App Store, there will be blood!!! Until then, not much to scream about with Android apps. Still saving my precious dollars for a renewed iPad. (Hope so).

Androids are nice. But ipad edges it out still. Thanks to my ipad I basically only use my iphone now to make calls. I really don't use it otherwise. iPads power is in it's apps. With them you can do anything your mind can conjure up. Really. you'll have more fun on a ipad. You'll have more control on a android.

You're so right. And I'm that kind of guy who places fun over control in my computer environment. The friend that pushed me toward purchasing the Galaxy Tab is an Ubuntu break with tons of widgets displaying Ram,Rpm, temperature, Bandwith up and down, location of this and that. He really inpresses me but I know now better that I prefer the Apple experience. I'm satisified with my Tab 3 but my Android trip is nearly over...Will buy an iPad when Ram is bigger though. As for the fixed amount of memory (16, 32, 64, 128), I'd like too if Apple gave us the mean to expand it. Cheers.

Okay, I needed to speak up because I hate this misconception.

COPYING YOUR OWN MUSIC FROM YOUR OWN TABLET TO YOUR OWN COMPUTER IS NOT ILLEGAL.

Sorry for the all caps but this misinformation keeps spreading and I'm trying to stop it. The reason Apple doesn't let you copy music directly from your iPad or iPhone to your Mac isn't because it's illegal. It's because they want you to buy your music on iTunes.

This is the same reason Apple doesn't let you download an MP3 file from a website directly into the Music app on the phone. It has nothing to do with legality, it has everything to do with making you use iTunes to do that. If Apple let you do this, you could use any of the other music stores on the web directly on your phone (Amazon, etc.) and Apple doesn't want that!

Making users use a PC or Mac with iTunes to put their own music on iOS devices makes it just inconvenient enough that people may just log into the iTunes Store and buy what they want. Hell, I've done this myself. I felt dirty afterwards.

So yeah, not illegal. Just unprofitable for Apple. :)

Hey

Copying your own purchased CD's and ripping your own purchased DVD's is legal. Copying was used in the context of ILLEGAL copying ie. sharing MP3's from friends, downloading off torrents websites, etc.

Trust me, if you do it legally, you are in the minority like me.
Illegal file sharing has killed the industry. It's sad.
But then again, labels (movies and music) have gone too greedy. Whilst I don't encourage illegal file sharing, that's what the industries get for being greedy.

And yes, Apple DICTATES what you can do on their devices because they want you to support iTunes. Let's just say, it only made business sense for Apple and that's what they care about only. Their business. I do everything legally so it ain't an issue for me but I have other friends who have iPad and they NEVER use it!!! They don't want to do things legally, and that too, through iTunes.

:D

Since you're going for a tablet, I'm going to say that you should think differently....

And either get a Surface RT refurb (200$) or a Surface 2 (450$). Seriously, having what is essentially a full desktop browser is more awesome than you'd think.

My advice would be to go to a store like best buy spend a few minutes (or hours :) ) playing with a bunch of devices and pick what you like. If you are going to buy something outright look for features you'll end up using..try to figure out which apps you use (or are more likely to use) the most..and see how they look and feel on each OS (you can youtube )..Thats about all you can do..

I have a Note 2 and I really love using Netflix on it. Huge screen. I can't wait to go even bigger on my phone.

My iPhone 3GS just looks so small compared to it.

Do you eat what your friends tell you to? How about date the woman that your friends pick? or drive the car that your friends pick? Or take the job that your friends pick? Take your own pick instead.

First, open vs close is moot for an end user like you. It is a nice buzzword, that's about it.

Second construction is fine for both Apple and the rest IMO. Sure plastic doesn't feel that awesome to some but it depends if you can get over it.

Also do you need a smartphone? Emphasis on need. Do your "friends" and family use IM apps or does SMS work fine for your needs? If IM i say get a cheap but decent phone like Nexus 4/5 or Moto G depending on your carrier, or heck even a lumia. If money is no concern i would suggest iPhone 5S/LG G2/Xperia Z1.

And for the tablet if you are on the move a lot and do not game a lot, a nexus 7 works like a charm. Or if you buy an iPhone and like the sync capabilities of iOS then you could buy the iPad mini, can't go wrong with either.

Personally, I use the jeans test for all of my cellphones. If it doesn't fit in the front pocket of my skinny jeans, I move on.
