Further to the post above, the screen capture below shows the Christian Henson/Jake Jackson Logic template, and Mix window, for Spitfire's BBC SO, "Pro" 638GB version. Each of the "Stacks" in the capture, such as "Strings Stack", is a folder containing tracks for each instrument in that section of an orchestra, and indeed tracks for specific ways of playing a given instrument. That's how you get to 638GB of data in the library :)

The Mac Studio/Max in my signature, which costs US$2600 before any storage upgrade, handles this without difficulty. Obviously, doubling the CPU and memory doesn't hurt, the question is whether it's worth an additional US$2000 before storage upgrade. It is just a fact that a very small percentage of the people using a library like this have that much processing power or 128GB of memory.

In the video, Christian Henson and Jake Jackson demonstrate workflow with BBC SO and the template, which should give people an idea of the CPU and memory demands of a library like this. There's a useful intro, but one can skip to the substance starting at 4:30. Re Henson's comment at 6:31 about accidentally loading all the instruments in a Stack/orchestral section... Logic now has a default setting in Preferences that loads instruments only when they are actually used.

How To Use - ORCHESTRAL TEMPLATES

Thanks for the information very interesting and thanks the template link, that’ll come in very useful, I didn’t know about that. Really like that Dan Keen video as well, it’s very informative.

Wow that’s a massive template he‘s using!

I‘m using an ancient Mac Pro 1.1, I could have upgraded years ago, but it’s been so stable for years and it’s just worked, but all the software is stuck in the past.

I have the original Albions 123, which are now discontinued and an older vision Komplete, plus some other Kontakt libraries, plus various synths. The Mac Pro struggles with a lot of this and the Mac Studio is now the perfect time to upgrade.

I really took advantage of the recent sales and bought a lot of libraries from NI and Spitfire, including the BBCSO Core version. I did think about the Pro version but had spent a small fortune already.

What type of drives are your libraries stored on SSD, NVME?
I’m thinking to store the libraries on NVME to take advantage of the Thunderbolt bolt ports and speed.

What monitor/s do you use?
Currently I have a dual monitor set up, but am really thinking along the lines of one massive monitor or an Ultrawide.

I write library based music and dance music. With dance music I know the Max 64GB will handle it but my main concern with the Max 64GB was if it’ll handle extensive library use, it looks like it will going by the above videos!

Hi @chipandegg,

Yes, all of Spitfire's BBC Symphony Orchestra Logic templates, including for BBC SO Core, are on its dedicated site called BBC SO: The Page.

I've been trying out three storage locations for about 900GB of digital instruments:
  • my Mac Studio's 2TB internal drive
  • a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe M.2
  • a 2TB Samsung T7
I think that all three, including Samsung T7s, work fine for Logic and digital instruments. If you are interested in MVMe SSDs, you may find it helpful to check out a recent thread that I started called Thunderbolt 4 & NVMe M.2 External Storage: Read/Write Speeds? For the most recent posts in that thread (#84 and #85 on page 6), I tried two 980 Pros in RAID 0. The read and write speeds of that combination are amazing, but they're serious overkill for my purposes. There are also one or two posts in that thread about how long it takes to copy BBC SO files between my internal drive and a 980 Pro.

I use an Eizo 4K 27" monitor (link in my signature) and an iPad Pro because I process photographs and video. I think that Eizo monitors, while very well built, are a waste of money for processing data, such as music, where colour accuracy is not a central concern.

I haven't checked out the VI Control forum in some time, but there may be discussions there about the Mac Studios and 64GB vs 128GB of memory. There may also be discussions about the new M1 MacBook Pros, which as you know max out at 64GB of memory.

Great that you liked Dan Keen's video. A recent graduate of the Royal College of Music, I think that he's making some of the best videos on YouTube about making music. He's apparently spending most of June in Los Angeles. Just a guess, but Spitfire has a working relationship with Hans Zimmer, and I won't be surprised if Keen is spending some time at Zimmer's studio. Regardless, I suspect that his trip will result in one or two interesting videos.

How does Logic look in 4K, is everything really small, do you have to scale? On your internal Mac Studio hard drive, are you storing libraries? As I’ve read on a forums a few people doing this or saying theyre going to get a a Mac Studio with a very hard internal drive to keep samples.
