In case you didn’t catch this little tidbit in the presentation.

This highly suggests that the 4x version will be based on the M2 instead.

It makes sense if they plan to release the M2 Air before converting Intel Mac Pros over to the M2 GigaUltra.

Also, a bit disappointed that we didn’t see the M2 today. But to me, it never made sense to see a chip as important as the M2 launch in a 6 year old design. Made zero sense. It should launch with the brand new MacBook Air and the new iPad Pro.

As an Apple shareholder, I would like to see a new MacBook Air 14” and a brand new MacBook Air 16” instead of rehashing the 6 year old MBP 13”.

And most importantly of all, release a $750 MacBook SE in the shell of the current Air. This will be the most important Mac of all.

Timestamp of Apple saying the M1 Ultra is the last chip in the M1 family:

Pretty much. M1 is introductory technology, it’s impressive they were able to take it this far. M2 is likely to bring more nifty things.

Should we bet that the next Mac Pro will have a Quad M1 Max - 40 CPU Cores , 128 GPU Core 256 GB Unified memory and 16 TB SSD and 1.6 TB bandwith .. introduction this WWDC

There is no Quad M1 Max because the "Ultra" is the last one in the family. Instead we will see something else, probably a different design.

the m2 has no purpose in ipad pro currently. apple continues to gimp iPadOS such that the M1 itself already stands as overkill.

for now but they could simply have one more thing ... if Ultra is Dual M1 Max .. then Quad M1 Max looks like the next thing ...

Of course it isn't a 4-die. The yields would be so low.

The next one would be an M1 Ultra MCM, multi-chip module. A pair of Ultras mounted on a package.
4 interconected dies. Separate pieces of silicon. Yields would be the same as the M1 Max. Just as they've done with the M1 Ultra, which is already multi-chip. What the tweet says is that there's no support for 4 MCM on the M1 Max, it only supports up to 2 (the M1 Ultra).

Why? Because the marketing team can't use the word "Extreme"?

We've already seen how accurate this prediction is, not sure why there's suddenly doubt about 4x Max.

This is where it gets really interesting .. will we se Quad M1 Max (Dual M1 Ultra) or even Octo M1 Max .... I think that Quad M1 Max with 40 CPU Core, 128 GPU Core, 256 GB RAM and 1.6 TB bandwidth feel like a Mac Pro 2022 BUT why not take it to the extreme with an Octo with 80 CPU Core, 256 GPU Core 512 GB RAM ... it could happen and apple could market it as the next Mac Pro is a supercomputer on the desk ....

M1 Ultra is clearly a monolithic piece of silicon.

I don't think you understand what multi-chip means.

Where did they say in keynote from today? Dont mind to share the video time?

Oh, it's on their website now and I don't want to look for the time. Just click "Learn the secret that unites these superpowers" button and you will see it.

John said it. I did not note the time. ? But he really said it. It will be interesting what that means for the Mac Pro. Because the M2 Ultra is probably over 12 months away from today.

Apple's press release says:
Apple’s innovative packaging architecture that interconnects the die of two M1 Max chips
Apple’s innovative UltraFusion uses a silicon interposer that connects the chips across more than 10,000 signals
What I take from this is that it's two silicon chips connected with another silicon chip (a silicon interposer) instead of being routed through a PCB, but each part is separate. It can't be a monolithic piece of silicon. It wouldn't fit on TSMC's 5nm reticle, it's too long.

Because they literally said that the M1 Ultra is the "last chip in the M1 family" during the keynote.

"Good morning, we're introducing today the Apple W1 processor for the Mac Pro workstation."

It's a natural evolution to connect pieces of silicon on an external bus and possibily external memory. It seems extremely unlikely Gurman got all the existing code names right, but the last one wrong.

He say in the video that UltraFusion is a MULTI-die chip architecture ... NOT a DUAL chip architecture .. so this confirms we will defently see a Quad Chip and even a Octo chip heck like a wrote way way back with a multi-die chip architecture the whole system becomes modular in a sense that we can se machines like

Mac Studio
2 M1 Max Chip
20 CPU Core
64 GPU Core
128 GB Unified memory

Mac Pro
4 M1 Max Chip
40 CPU Core
128 GPU Core
256 GB Unified memory

Mac Pro
8 M1 Max Chip
80 CPU Core
256 GPU Core
512 GB Unified memory

Mac Pro
12 M1 Max Chip
120 CPU Core
384 GPU Core
768 GB Unified memory

Yep those are two M1 Max chips. Thats the beauty of the Apple Silicon architecture. There is only one core architecture which is the same in M1 up to M1 Ultra. And there are only two dies. The M1 die (which they not only use for many Macs but also several iPads) and the M1 Max die. The M1 Pro is a M1 Max with a part chopped off. Thats why the M1 Pros internal name was Jade C-Chop. M1 Maxs was Jade C-Die.
So with all the chopping and binning Apple manages to get many different SoCs for all performance levels out of only two die designs.
And by using two dies for their most performant SoCs they even mange to improve their yields.

Pretty genius architecture design.

I really cant say it's a final cause you can just use multiple M1 Ultra for Mac Pro just like M1 Ultra did with M1 Max.
But Apple said it is...

If Apple does not change its mind, the Mac Pro will come with something different, not one of the M1 variant.
