Am I missing something? I must be.

Pricing out a 13" Macbook Air and Pro for my girlfriend.

Both come with 16GB ram and 512SSD

Both are priced at $1,699. Am I missing the obvious here?

You'll notice that the 14" base MBP is also the same price as these 2 on sale, or from the education store - when you've spec'd up the M2 Air and M2 13" Pro to have 16GB Ram. the 14" MBP is a no brainer at these prices

That's what I thought.

THANK YOU for that answer.

I wanted to make certain I wasn't crazy.

I can't believe they are both selling at the same price. Is this a mistake?

Have Apple increased the US prices of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro?

They have just raised the prices in the UK and Europe.

The 13 inch MacBook Pro was £1249 / €1299. Now it's £1349 / €1599!

The new MacBook Air has a much bigger price increase. It started at £949 / €949. The new model is £1249 / €1499!
Old model still available. MASSIVE global inflation. Bigger screen, newer chip. Sucks big time that it costs more, but that's 2022 for you.

What if I don't want the extra weight of the 14-inch and my needs are more everyday rather than pro? If so, new M2 MBA is a no brainer.

Because I want to get her the newest models with Magsafe and future-proofed with M2.

I don't mind spending a little bit more for the M2 AIR over the M1 AIR.

My question from the start is what choice do I make when the M2 AIR is the same price as the M2 MBP? And why is that even the case here?
The choice primarily comes down too whether you need a fan inside your computer.

The weight is a concern, certainly.

However, if you are getting more power at the same price and don't mind the extra weight, then the MBP is a no-brainer

I prefer the fan on the outside of the computer actively using the new M2 MBA, I'd rather the lighter weight, bigger screen and faster charging option. But that's just me, for others it will be different, they'll want the fan, or the 14-inch model.

No mistake at all. Apple giving you the ultimate choice - they create, you decide which one to create with.

Yep. IMO there is still no compelling reason to choose the 13" MBP instead of either the 13" Air or the 14" MBP.

Some people want a lighter laptop with passive cooling, I guess that's the main selling points of the Air.

I do wonder with the continued supply chain issues if the Pros will get move expensive when Apple refresh them with the M2.

The weight difference will depends if she carries her laptop in a purse/laptop bag. If she does, she won't notice the weight difference. This is what I do and I haven't noticed a weight difference

Honestly it does seem like, heck everything in general with inflation is increasing.. Not just supply chain for technology related stuff.

I don't think a lot of people understand that the world is changing and might be worse than 2008.

Why does it matter if it is normal?

I guess it doesn't

And I'm not trying to make more out of this than it should where I am being grilled for even asking the question.

I just have never seen an AIR and MBP with the same identical build specs at the same price point. I always thought the MBP would be more expensive for additional hardware features.

It just seems odd

Don't understand the existence of the M2 on the MacBook Pro 13" this model should be just eliminated.

Anyhow.. This Air is quite expensive even beyond the 1299€ previously discussed, only having support to one display and all the models to pick up on store are 8GB... Quite a mess.

Or just call it the MacBook, which it could be a nice middle model for those who don't want the Pro price tag. While Apple has done things like this before, it was surprising to see it get the upgrade over the mini.

Is the 14" base MBP priced differently for you? From the education store a base 14" MBP is priced at $1849, while the M2 MBA with 16GB RAM and the 512GB SSD is priced at $1579. That comes out to a $270 difference for M1 Pro vs M2.

Pricing aside, do we know yet how the M2 stacks up with the M1 Pro?

Too early to tell on the chip front, but we should have more GPU performance and a bit more CPU but still M1 Pro is the best way unless you need battery life over a 2nd external display.

I'm surprised Apple kept the 13" MBP around. Just consider it a pricing weirdness.

They placed the M1 Pro/Max above the M2 in the keynote and said they’re even more powerful machines than M2. Given that the M1 Pro is about twice the performance of the M1, you can do the math for the M2. I wouldn’t expect too much. The M2 is the usual spec bump for the M1 with the addition of a 24GB option. It’s plenty for daily tasks, but it’s just not in the same league as Pro/Max/Ultra and it’s not supposed to be there. If you’re fine with a M1 now, you’ll be fine with a M2. If the M1 doesn’t provide the power you need, then the M2 isn’t going to do it either.
