It is really bad how often it goes down. My girlfriend is in the middle of her finals, emailing photomontages to supervisors, and mac mail is going down - the one she pays for.

Free hotmail is working just fine.... :(

Has there been any news or announcement from Apple about what happened yesterday to bring .Mac down? It seems like kind of a big deal, yet there's nothing I have found about the cause, what was done to fix it, or the impact on users.

Having the entire web-based service go down from a major company like Apple was a huge problem for millions of people (how many people use .Mac -- 3-5 million? I'm just guessing), and yet it seems like there's nothing being mentioned about it anywhere.

What up wit that?

It didn't affect my 'free' mac web pages or any of my mac galleries... just the mail app. for $99 a year people sure do expect a lot! No dissatisfaction here apple, you rule.

It's funny. They updated it today. Before it said 100% of members and now it just says some members.

Yes, I expect the services I'm paying for to actually be provided. If that's what you consider to be "a lot".

I pay $170 or something a year for a family pack. One of my e-mail accounts is still down today. No idea why -- it just won't let me log in. The others are working OK.

Another thing I expect to get from Apple is reliable service without the headaches I might expect from another service provider. I feel really let down the past couple days. This is something I'm not used to from this company.

I have a lot of other issues to deal with in my life, I don't need to waste my time dealing with something I'm already paying Apple to do for me. Especially with no communication from them or idea of when it might be resolved.

Perhaps they are laying the groundwork and making preparations for the big .mac/.me update/overhaul that's been rumored about. :)
Getting it ready for WWDC and in doing so the entire service had to come down for a bit. Not an uncommon thing to do when running maintenance on servers, let alone major upgrades.
That would explain the silence from Apple about the downtime.

Well said! If .mac were free I wouldn't complain, just move on and find another free service that worked. But when there are so many other services out there that are either free or cheaper than .mac and actually work, it is hard to justify the headaches that we have to put up with.

EDIT: And I also have a family pack.

I'm not aware of any email host (free or subscription) that delivers the 100% uptime that some of you people seem to require.

Do a google for "gmail down" or 'hotmail down" and it looks like every major host has had their fair share of "being down" for large amounts of users.

Of course nothing is perfect, I don't expect that. But I haven't seen any that even come close to the downtime and other problems that .mac has had in the year that I have had it. Completely down, partially down, SSL issues, you name it.
