I’m on my mobile phone.
No my computer does not break disks. First disk in 6 years.

Is there anyway I can just start a fresh here?

Currently In disk utility under ‘internal’ tab the disk is called ‘disk0s2’.
This is wrong isn’t it?
Ok, you cannot do it on mobile.

Ok, I interpreted this wrongly then: "On its 3rd HD NOW....And I fully accept this now 4/5 year old HD is on its way out.".

You start fresh by booting the Internet recovery, starting the Disk utility and then erasing the disk, quit disk utility, start OS installation.

How to erase disk in 10.7 (your original OS and pretty much all later versions too): https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4220531

If none of this stuff works then I repeat: Maybe the cable, drive or something else is broken.

I’ve pressed command option R and it’s now just about load up for 5th time. So when I get in and access disk utility erase ‘disk0s2’. I think I had issue doing this before. This shouid have been such a simple thing.

Yeah, it is a simple thing. That is why its so difficult to assist. Cannot figure what is going wrong from your description, cable problem is not a far fetched idea.

Take a photo with your mobile of the disk utility screen (when you start it) and post it here. Would be much easier to see what you are seeing.

Can't be online much longer today though. Its getting later here and stuff to do.

When I erase disk do I need to select format as Mac OS extended journaled ?

Just tried and that no permission message come back up.

Currently the ‘Internal’ tab has a disk or tab called ‘disk0s2’

At this rate I’m tempted to just send this damn disk back and just buy a new Mac!
But surly this shouid be a simple
Fix?!

Here is my disk utility now.

Here is my disk utility now.
That looks fine to me. Cannot remember if it needs to be mounted or not.

But, if you quit from the Disk Utility and return to the installer can you choose the disk0s2 to be the installation target?

The disk Shouod not be called Macintosh HD and not disk0s2 ?

When ininstall
It’s super slow and eventually has an error I think.

And right now I can’t select disk
It’s not there. When I try to install. It was earlier on. I need to totally restart. How can I just start like I got drive out the package?

It doesn't matter what the disk is called. You format (erase) it and give it a name. OS doesn't care what the name is, you can name it after you granny if you wish. If you don't name it the Disk utility will name it.

If you can't select it then try to re-erase it. If you can't do that either then something is probably broken. I would start with the cable like somebody suggested a week ago.

Bye for now.

Would the broken cable cause software issues like this disk issue or would it only slow things down?

It was fine earlier. I got to install
But since then it’s something I’ve done. I need to undo.
I just want to start again like I got it out of the packet.

I have just comand opt r and waited to get in from start again and this come up…

I’m back in now. Trying to delete this disk. But not sure how. Doesn’t seem to let me Erase.

I have selected format as MAC OS EXTENDED JOURNALED

I press continue and it’s saying ‘Unmounting disk’ but then error comes up and it says ‘erase process has failed’

It’s saying the disk is not mounted. Does it need mounting. And if so where???

Here is an idea: go and buy a SATA to USB adapter cable. Then connect the new SSD drive to your MBPs USB-port and try to do the Internet recovery. If it works your internal HD cable is most likely busted. Then buy a new internal HD cable and install the SSD internally. But, if the adapter cable doesn't work then your computer has bigger problems.

You can also use the adapter cable to check out if your old hard disk is really broken or not. If it still works you can use it as a backup drive with the adapter cable.

I’m sure it was just my old HD slowing down which has caused this.
I’ve just managed to ‘show all device’ in disk utility. But still can’t seem to erase or create a new disk for install in install.
