I have the 'crushed whites' problem. No amount of calibration seems to help. I have tried several HDMI cables, also tried Display Port to both HDMI and VGA. All give a rubbish picture as my Mac Mini (late 2012) sees my monitor as a television.

See the first thread titled update 4th March on this post, looks like there are strong fix for this problem. :)[/QUOTE
I've just given this a try but without any luck. I'm pretty new to the Mac so it took longer than it would for most people. I had to create the Displays/Overrides folder in the Library folder. Was this right? Should that folder already have been there? Is the System/Library folder the same one as when you press the Alt button on the Go menu in Finder?

The fixes talk about monitors but my mini is plugged into a Samsung TV. Should the fix have worked on my setup?

It sounds as if the issue was the mini confusing a Computer Monitor with a TV. If you have a TV, then the settings were correct. That is my understanding.

These HDMI/ Display port problems have kept me from pulling the trigger on several new 2012 model Mac Mini purchases for personal and business use. I have a mid-2011 base model Mac Mini with Intel HD 3000 graphics and it works flawlessly. To my knowledge the Intel HD 3000 had none of these problems. I wonder if a change in the post 2011 HDMI spec requirements that restrict HD playback of protected content via HDMI and other HD outputs is one of the underlying culprits of the problems these newer Intel HD 4000 graphics chips and their drivers. I have been reading about similar problems also plaguing Wintel machines with Intel HD 4000 graphics for a while.

I can't risk investing in new machines with this problem still ongoing. How many months since the 2012 Mini release have we seen graphics problems? Isn't this going on month five? This is a real deal breaker for me with the late 2012 model Mac Mini until these issues are 100% completely resolved.

UPDATE: I purchased my late 2012 2.3Ghz i7 Mac Mini yesterday. Hours after making the purchase I read that the remaining HDMI display issues have best resolved with the latest final release of update 10.8.3. This is good news for all potential buyers of the late-2012 Mac Mini models that use the HD4000 graphics chip set.

It's very strange because the problem has been ongoing for some users and those late 2012 model users have been waiting to see if the official ML 10.8.3 release will solve it once and for all. For others there have been apparent fixes and work arounds to the issue with the past Apple updates for ML, the firmware, reset the OS X ML settings, change monitors, use different cables for HDMI or display port, etc..

There seem to be far fewer complaints about it recently than there were a few months back. Until the 10.8.3 update is released and the final reviews are in from those who are having problems I guess the only other thing to do would be to purchase the new late 2012 model Mini....install all the latest updates right away and give it a thorough trial on your monitors or TVs. If it absolutely doesn't work for your setup then you could either wait with everyone else for the next ML update or possibly return it within the allowed return time window of the vendor you purchased it from.

I just don't want to be stuck with investing in a number of new Mini purchases...spend more money upgrading the RAM...buying all the peripherals...application software, etc...and find out weeks after my return window has expired that they have display issues with my current monitors and/or TVs.

I believe I am having the same problem with my MBP. On 10.8.2. DVI looks fine, but when I plug my MBP in using HDMI to my LG IPS235, I have all kinds of white problems. On this test (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/white.php) I can only see 200. DVI is better.

I just bought the monitor yesterday... tempted to take it back but reading it might be the MAC problem. Anyone else having this issue with a MacBook Pro?

The largest HDMI issued was resolved in December. The "crushed whites" issue that affects a small number of folks has not been fixed officially. Reports are that the 10.8.3 beta fixes it, but that has not been confirmed.

I have not experienced the crushed whites issue with 3 different HDMI displays. I'm now using two 27" displays, a 2560x1440 attached via MDP->DP and an 1080p attached via HDMI.

Can anyone recommend a 22-24" display they are using with HDMI that is not experiencing this issue?
I've used an Acer S231HL with my Mac mini (Late 2012) with success. I've seen it on sale regularly for $129-139.

The script linked in the first post fixed my hdmi output on my 2012 mini. I though my monitor was just going bad :)

About to pull the trigger on the base mac mini when i saw this and a few other threads, which are worrying me a bit!
Ill be buying this to purely connect it up to my sony 32" hdtv via HDMI, for videos, music etc
Is this problem with mac mini's connected to monitors via hdmi or is it an hdmi connection problem in general?

Nothing works...

DL'ing 10.8.3 now. :D

Hope it helps.

Newbie alert! Sorry I've joined this thread a bit late, but I've just encountered the problems mentioned. I've connected my late 2012 Mac Mini i5 to a Packard Bell Viseo 220 DX via HDMI/DVI and just get colour noise. I've tried it on a rubbish AOC and although I do get a picture it regularly flickers and eventually deteriorates. The reason I'm bringing this up is because I'm running 10.8.3 AND have the latest EFI 1.7 upgrade...so why do I still get the problem?
Trawling t'internet brings up 2 possible explanations; Apple HDMI port compatibility issues and/or the built-in Intel 4000 HD graphics card. Can anyone give me some clues as to how I should proceed as I'm a bit miffed at having bought a HD screen specifically because my Mac Mini has that connectivity facility

If nothing else works for you, I'd suggest you get a MiniDisplayPort-to-VGA adapter, and then try connecting to your monitor via the VGA input (it has only DMI and VGA inputs, is that correct?).

VGA should support the monitor's full resolution, and (contrary to what others may say), should still give you a decent image…

I'd take it back and get another one if it doesn't work at all. Apple should fix or replace defective products. You could also try the TB/Mini-DP port with an adapter (you can get one off amazon for under $7; I use two monitors here and they both work fine with both ports). You might also have a defective HDMI cable if you've only tried one. Flickering and a deteriorating picture don't sound right for a digital connection. I'm using a 22" AOC monitor right now with the HDMI port and the picture is perfect.

You can (in any of these orders):

1> Take it back where you bought it or an Apple Store and either get it replaced or tested.

2> Try another HDMI cable if you haven't already (is that HDMI OR DVI connectors on the same monitor or HDMI *TO* DVI adapter that you've already tried?)

3> Try a cheap TB-to-HDMI adapter off Amazon and see if that port works any better (if it's the same, it's not the port, but could be a defective GPU chipset).

Thanks Magnum - I get a good screen using a Thunderbolt to mini VGA, and I'm pretty sure the HDMI to DVI cable I have is a good one as it came from the IT department of the company I work for. The adaptor is the one bundled with the Mac Mini, so it should be ok! I've contacted the store I got it from and am awaiting a reply - I'll keep you posted as this is an interesting problem that seems to be causing a lot of angst across t'internet!

Good tip, so I went back to John Lewis where it was discovered that there is "nothing wrong" with my Mac Mini, and the cable I'm using is top-notch :) My computer worked beautifully on a HP monitor in John Lewis, so after much head-scratching myself and the technician finally arrived at what seems to be a very logical conclusion: my Packard Bell monitor operates at 1080i whereas the Mac Mini outputs 1080p. And because the monitor is a cheapy, it doesn't upscale (if that's the right word). Hence, snow/flickering etc. So I've bought a mini display port -> DVI cable for a tenner off A***on and it send a perfectly good digital signal which I'm happy with (well, better than paying £150+ for another monitor). Cheers ;)
