I am no longer looking forward to the Haswell chip.

System builders and manufacturers are reporting that the pre-production chips were running a lot cooler than the production chips. They are unhappy because it appears that the production Haswell runs hotter than the Ivy or Sandy bridge and they have all kinds of issues due to running so hot.

This sucks. I was really looking forward to the slightly cooler aspect of this chip. I HATE when electronics run hot. Just how I roll.

So, if this is true (I never overclock) then I will stick with my Ivy Bridge, or whatever my 2112 mini has :)

...
This came to a head when I needed to a full scan in Windows 8 and the temperature went up to 85-87 C which I regard as too hot. (check the maximum temperature allowed for the CMOS battery, memory and SSD have increased degradation at elevated temperatures).
That's normal, even on Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge platforms. If you want a cool processor, then do not use the processor!

Haswell processors have integrated VRAM and integrated voltage regulators. So it is pretty natural, that they generate more heat than less integrated circuits.

One user here on MR wrote, that his 2.6 GHz Quad-Core Ivy Bridge i7 reaches 100 °C, if he encodes H.264 HD movies with HandBrake. I think this is pretty normal. Or what do you expect? 100 % (or 400 %) CPU utilization, CPU temperature 20 °C in a 30 °C environment, or what!?

My 2012 2.6 runs regular 24 hour batches of the same encodes as MJL at 100% CPU at 100C as well. My 2011 2.0GHz quad ran the same for over a year or so and it ran at a similar 95C. The 2011 is just fine still (greener pastures) even after its 18 months of 'living in hell'.

100C is not an issue for me. The mini and CPU were designed for that. I do what I can to minimise the temp because of my CPU intensive use, but I don't stress either.

This sucks.
No, it creates an unnecessary panic. I doubt that the 100 °C CPU temperature (105 °C max.) reaches the other components, because this would require a good thermal conductor. Air, especially hot air is not a very good thermal conductor.

Haswell (and Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge) processors run only hot, if your tasks need the CPU power (most likely only temporary). Otherwise the improved power management features decrease the temperature, if you do not use all CPU cores or CPU/IGP features.

If this is the case, Apple may be forced (in order to get the Haswell in) to rethink the "super compact sexy alloy unibody with a 'somewhat worthless fan' design" they have. Otherwise known as the SCSAUWASWF Design :)

There is no way the current alloy unibody can handle an even hotter CPU. The heat is tolerable in my 2.6 but anything hotter and I am cooking my breakfast on it.

There is no additional heat. They moved more components into the CPU. The same heat is being created, it's just where the heat occurs.

People have said the same thing about IB and SB but they have been perfectly stable platforms.

Hysterical! Thanks for the laugh.

I do over fret about temperatures. It's just how I roll :)

no mac mini to come out any more - only mac pro
i work for apple in uk,
just buy this 2012

I would love for it to come with a dedicated graphics, maybe something like a GT740m, but that seems unlikely, but if it comes with HD 5100 or 5200, I'm happy.

I was considering on getting a 2011 model with Radeon 6630m, came close to buying one but with the refresh coming this month (or later), I decided not to and instead decided to save up.

If the base model iMac didn't come with a 740M, the mini most definitely will not. Iris and Iris Pro will be the choices.

Well I dont think they are gonna dis the Mac Mini line, although with the new design of the Mac Pro there could be a eventual revamp. They need something in the low end to mid desktop market. Many folks dont want iMacs. At least I dont. So there may be no real change in the mac mini except for minor CPU upgrades and possibly wireless upgrade.

That being said and after looking at the new mac pro I would hope the new mac minis would have the following:

-802.11ac, do believe they would hold on to etho at least one more model.
-latest cpu offering from intel or amd (though I doubt there will ever be a AMD based mac).
-Would love to see dedicated ATI (AMD) video (no the mobile crap) that can be paired with the intel iGPU on chip. Much like the lucid logic mess for the PC.
-SSD Baseline on all models.
-Remove HDMI in favor of another display port (Thunderbolt 2). This is very possible, easy to get adapters or cables that are display port on one end and hdmi on the other. So this is no biggy. Plus you can do more with thunderbolt ports.
-Would like them to hold on to at least the current 4 USB ports. Thunderbolt is still pricey and so many things are remaining USB.
-Now one more thing I would love to see is 5.1 audio jacks or the current stereo/mic jacks with also a digital (SPDIF) out..

That would make a very solid offering...

Having HDMI is one of the benefits of the Mac Mini. I'd be sad if it is gone. However, if HDMI is indeed removed, just lets hope there are more than one TB port.

SSD baseline? Probably. I really suspect that either this year or next year, the Mac mini will be redesigned and will go all-SSD and loose the option for an internal HDD. It certainly makes sense. The Mac mini leaned more towards the MBA line and the iMac leaned more towards the MBP line. Furthermore, the Mac mini should not pose a competition to the Mac Pro line as well.

It did not take long to get banned after he posted, wonder if someone from Apple is already on to him....

He threatened me in good grammar and with some nice polish words. I guess the mods weren't so happy afterall. We'll see about Apple. Maybe he was right, as implausible it seems. :)

Well, hopefully we'll see storage increase.

As for GPUs i wonder if Apple will go for;

HD4400 - i5 dual
HD4600 - i7 quad

Or

HD5100 - i5 dual
HD5200 - i7 quad

It was written, Mac Mini Max. TDP is 45W. Thus...as of today, there is not any quad-core i7 mobile Haswell processor to support Iris Pro HD5200 graphics lower than 47W TDP....the only available quad-core i7 mobile Haswell processors supports HD4600 graphics.

However, there are some dual-core i7 mobile Haswell processor which supports Iris HD5100 or HD5000 graphics...below 45W TDP limit.

I hope you are wrong! Do you think MacBook Pro and Mac Mini won't be updated in 2013?

My opinion? It's going to be a "silent update" of Mac Mini (similar to iMacs) till the end of Oct. 2013.

Wait and see....:)

Many do use the HDMI, I am fine loosing it as long as a quality TB2 to HDMI adapter is included. HDMI is limited as it can only serve one purpose (A/V) while TB2 can do that and much more. But yea, 3 of them would be great.

This topic is still picking my brain. Spent a few hours the other night looking over Intels lineup of up coming CPU/iGPU offerings.. Currently they all perform sub par. I just dont understand why Intel doesnt just put 2 of the GPUs on the chip with 1 GB of DRAM.. I really dont see it costing that much when you compare it to the performance one would gain..

IMHO the iMac and the Mac Mini should both offer top of the line single card GPU. Let the Mac Pro offer the dual video card.

People buy Macs to get the best. Currently unless you got a Mac Pro video performance isnt the best.. HD4000 - 5200 is fine for desktop usage, but any heavy video editing or gaming just isnt up to par.

To add a dedicated GPU (Lets say, a GT750m) I think that the mini will ether require a larger chassis or redesigned cooling, unless they decide to comprimise with the same ULV processors that the Airs use.

I believe there will be a new mini for several years to come though I also believe they may shrink it down to two models or even one. As for ajkaramba, I don't believe someone with horrible grammar works for Apple.

It could be youngster posting from his smartphone in "text speak" however having a row with another poster is not something what one would expect from a person working in an Apple retail shop.

My 2009 mac mini has SPDIF out via an adaptor in the 3.5mm socket. I think this has been standard on all mac mini's since then.

I think the 3 models works fine for now low end, high end, and a server.

They could possibly "simply" it for consumers if they have the server model only avaliable from the buisiness & Education stores i suppose.
