Same here, except that I own EyeTV200 as well as an EyeHome unit to stream the content to my TV. (May buy a 2nd EyeHome unit to put by another TV in the house.)

Just watching to see what other people come up with, etc.

Finding an EyeTV200

Yeah, I noticed that Apple has now stopped carrying the EyeTV line (minus the EZ) from their online store. Apple Stores that do still have the 200's and 500's in stock have marked them down from their original $330/$350 price tags up to $100 off. The problem now is finding them.

I just eBay'd the 200 and came up with several listings with Buy It Now prices at $280, leading me to believe you could get it cheaper than that. There also isn't any shortage of them either (search "eyetv 200".) That is probably your best bet. Most online retailers are still charging the full $330.

I'm definitely interested in getting you set up with an EyeTV. They're defintiely easy to use, and are full-featured. I only have the chance to check up on the forums every other day or so, so be patient with responses. Lose hope after a week or more of inactivity. :p

well friday i ordered the eye TV 200 for MacMall. I am always really nervous about buying from random web sites that i've never heard of and that somehow charge $50 less than everyon else. so i ended up paying full price at MacMall, so I should be receiving it sometime this week.

I am still wondering if elgato is going to upgrade the 200 b/c their website says "currently unavailable". especially since i just ordered one, i will probably immediately have an outdated product! (i hope not!!!)

is there any advantage to the eye Home over just putting the mac mini and elgato unit in with the TV?

The EyeHome device is simply a media server. It allows you to stream your iLife media content (iTune, iPhoto, iMovie) as well as your EyeTV programs to any TV in the house. It can be run via a LAN or WAN, with the LAN setup being the better choice for large files (movies).

I've started ripping my DVD collection onto my Mac mini, and am building my library onto an external disk. That way, I can play my movies without damaging or ruining my DVD's. I've already had to replace a few because of scratches, etc., so having the content on the Mac keeps the content safe.

how is quality on the eye home? i have streamed video from my PB to my mac mini by sharing through front row on the mini. anything wireless (on an all 802.11g network) is worthless. and even when both are connected through LAN the quality is much better, but it still has trouble connecting or just dropping the video connection at times. im not sure why.

The EyeHome works fine. I can stream my iTunes (although not any purchased songs) and iPhoto content with no problems. I can play my EyeTV recorded content as well, and it generally works fine. Sometimes I get the EyeHome software that runs on the Mac to crash, but it hasn't happened lately.

My current problem is with my ripped DVD's. After 10 or 20 minutes the sound gets out of synch for some reason. I think it's just fine if I play it through QuickTime on the Mac, but for some reason it getrs out of whack when going through EyeHome. Haven't gotten any help from anyone else on this one yet, but will keep trying to get it resolved.

woo everything came in the mail today! got the miniStack set up and the elgato eye TV going as well! looks pretty cool, heres a pic.

im curious if anyone has any pointers for the elgato eye TV program. im trying to see if i can get it to auto record programs, delete adds from recorded shows and eventually get the shows to play on front row.

btw already the eye TV 200 is much better than myTV.PVR. much better video quality, does not jitter or shake or any other video problems. and looks better (the physical box, not just the video! heh)

oh yeah, the setup now makes the monitor look really bad and crappy. and i think im going to switch the keyboard with the BT apple keyboard i use with my PB.

is there a way to auto delete commercials with the eyeTV 200? I found how i can manually edit them out, its not too hard, just kinda time consuming and annoying.

also the whole 'export to iPod' is really processor intensive! and takes for ever! i guess that what happens in the whole re-encoding. not that i have a video iPod, but im just trying to see how everything works. and also how i can incorporate everything with front row.

For what it's worth, the MediaCentral application integrates DVD, Music, Video file, and EyeTV playback into a single Front Row-like application.

what program are you using to rip your DVD's? and what format are you ripping them to?

I'm using Handbrake, and going to MPEG-2, I think. I'd have to double-check at home.

I'm basically using the recommended settings from the software maker.

here is an interesting thread that talks about the release of the elgato eyeTV 250. its cheaper than the eyeTV 200 and supposedly going to be released at the beginning of april. if you google the 250 it is definitely for sale a couple of places for around $200 but not available until sometime in april. the one thing im curious about is wether or not the 250 uses hardware based encoding, or if it relies on your processor to do all the encoding. it looks like the eyeTV EZ which is definitely software based. but if the 250 is hardware based, then its definitely a lot cooler than the 200 because it is much smaller, and supports digital signals. im curious to find out more. but it seems there is no info on elgato's web site at this time.

Interesting. Is there a way to link this so called "Handbrake" app to Front Row?

drop your movies in the "movies" folder in your home directory. front row will automatically take any .mpg or other playable format from that directory and include it under 'video' in front row. it works with TV shows or whatever you have in the movies folder. im trying to find a way to get a TV show i ripped from a DVD i own to show up in front row under TV shows instead of under video. it seems that the only TV shows that will show up in Front Row are those TV shows that are purchased in iTunes. Unless anyone else knows how to get this to work?!?!

Alternatively, create a symbolic link or an alias in your Movies folder to the folder that contains your movies. This is useful if you have your movies on external drives.

u know you could save a lot of HD space if you encoded in mpeg-4

This sounds like the beginnings of a page 1 rumor to me.. Apple Stores are not selling the most popular Mac PVR equipment anymore, in preparation for rolling out the new Apple/Mac PVR device.

heh, well, elgato (the creator of the EyeTV 200) is not selling it anymore either. so it probably means elgato is rolling out a new product. apple shows on their site the eyeTV 250 which isnt even on elgato's site yet. and you can find the 250 for sale in a number of other places, but they arent shipping for about 4-5 weeks on most sites.

also. . . i just got a griffin powermate, and its awsome! i have a little thread here (dont want to repeat myself) but just commenting here that the powermate makes a great addition to the DVR project. . . it would be cooler if it were BT but i dont know where the batteries would fit!

while I was of course teasing about the page 1 rumor, its not just the 200 that the stores arent selling anymore - sounds like everything except the EZ model.. anyway, back to the usual rumor-mongering again..
