No no. I don't think you can use a 10.6.0 disc. You can use 10.6.3, I can confirm that, but I doubt a 10.6.0 disc will work.

Unless you do all of it in Target Disk Mode, you aren't going to get a functioning machine. And by that I mean:

1. Install to the target volume (mounted with TDM)
2. Install the 10.6.4 update to the target volume

You will probably not be allowed to install the Mac Mini 2010 specific update, as you booted OS will likely say it isn't compatible with the computer. So you will have to do the vanilla 10.6.4, boot the Mini and then apply the custom update.

I don't see why the 10.6.0 discs won't work, either way I should know by next week . . . also I thought MacMiniColo stated they got the new Mac Minis working with 10.6.0 disc.

If not its really not a big deal to go out and get a 10.6.3 disc online.

*Update* Regardless I know I can the Mac Mini Server working on regular Snow Leopard without have to run custom firmware, etc. It just getting the correct disc and applying the correct updates from Apple. *Update*

I am not saying they won't, but I wouldn't bet on it. And I wouldn't bet on the subsequent Install being usable, even to install updates.

The reason it wouldn't is because it lacks the necessary drivers. Or, the drivers have been tweaked for the Mini. It may work, but it may not. I can test with 10.6.0 as well.

If you don't mind testing it that would be great. I remember reading last night that if you install 10.6.0 you won't have Ethernet or SD however you will have graphics and wireless, so from their just download the specific update for the Mac Mini, it installs all the correct stuff for the Ethernet and SD card and your on your way.

Hey Guys

For those of us that don't have 2010 Mac Mini 10.6.3 retail discs, I think we can use our "old" 10.6.0 disc and then download this update from Apple to resolve our issues:

Mac OS X v10.6.4 Update Mac mini (Mid 2010)

I'm going to be testing this out when I get my Mac Mini Server next week.

-iGrant

I have seen posts by another user saying that his Mac Mini Server would not boot correctly with the installing the 10.6 DVD from last year. Let us know how it works out for you.

It would be great if there was some way to slipstream that update into the 10.6 media and create a new disk.

Yeah, I will test it out. Good timing really as I am in the midst of getting a new standard deployment image ready so I have the machine at my disposal.

We put out about 30+ Minis every few weeks, so I need to get these new ones going ASAP.

I also doubt this would work why? I tried to do a clean install on my i7 iMac using the 10.6.0 family pack retail discs once, and it just hung there. For those of you who don't know, i7 iMacs shipped with 10.6.2

I have an idea not sure if it would work. but you can create a USB install using the same method they use for Hackintosh netbooks using disk utility on a working mac with DVD drive. once that is done, if there is a way to "slipstream" the updates to the usb stick that might work.;)

The SL retail sold in the Apple Store is 10.6.3. It has the label new on it.
Are you saying this will work? I bought the server and it's still wrapped.

From what I have read only the 10.6.3 install DVD from a new Mini will work properly. Also, people are saying that SLS will run everything that SL will.

It would be nice to get definitive confirmed statements:)

I'll know by next Wednesday, Mini Server comes Tuesday and I'll test my 10.6.3 retail SL disc.

SLS runs everything but BootCamp. I have one in use right now.

That would make sense. Is it just that Boot Camp is not included ( like iLife) or is there a technical reason for not running it? Can I move my home from my previous Mini to the SL server?

If you already own a Mac Mini 2009 could you not pay to get an OS X replacement disc if your's was 'damaged' or lost? Would Apple then give you a 10.6.3 or 10.6.4 DVD?

I'm not sure, but I own a 2006 Mac Mini Core Solo and I rather not buy a new HDMI Mac Mini to just get the disks and then resell it . . .

Just a quick followup.

I did not have success restoring my 10.6.3 image and then applying the Mac Mini 10.6.4 update.

The ethernet drivers were still unavailable (and wireless was quite buggy).

iGrant ...

on the other thread, jnjr16, was able to just use the retail 10.6.3 snow leopard disc and get everything working. It's the most recent one with the green sticker on it.

Just got back from the Apple store with no luck getting the Mac mini restore disks. They told me the only way they would provide them to me would be if I could show proof of purchase of a mac mini, proof of purchase of a mac mini server would not work. The apple genius also insured me that I could use the SL 10.6.3 retail disk to install SL client on my mac mini server without any issues, even though we all know you can't. Now I am thinking of buying a mac mini and making disk images of the install disks and then returning it. Anyone have issues returning a computer to apple?

The geniuses are right. I went and bought another retail disk. This time one specifically labeled with a grebe sticker as 10.6.3 and it installed just fine. I then did system updates and applied the mid 2010 Mac mini update from the apple site. All could not be better.

So to sum up. I have the new just released Mac mini server model with snow leopard server removed and snow leopard regular installed fresh from a 10.6.3 disc.

Hope this helps to know.

iGrant ...

I can't post until late tonight and will not be able to test his theory until next week, but I'll try to put a pic up. If I can't, Ill send you an email w/ jpg.
