Uhh...
What about the Mini? Everyone was crying because they thought that the Mini would be discontinued... it got a speed bump.

Anyone get a new Mac Mini? I totally want one.

I picked up one of the 2.0s after the event on Tuesday basically to replace my 1.66 model that has found its way to my father's desk (since their PC finally went the way of most PCs).

He loves the mini and I couldn't bring myself to take it away from him.

Anyways, the 2.0 C2D is a pretty big improvement over the 1.66 in terms of encoding h.264 files for the apple tv. Since it is pretty much my apple TV server, it fits the role perfectly.

The only thing that I'm mildly upset about is the fact that there is no 802.11n. But once I close on the condo next friday and move in, most likely I'll try to find a way to cleanly run wires to network it to the base station and apple tv.

*shrugs* so many people are upset with the mini "only" getting a speed bump. I'm happy that it did get a bump and that I don't have to buy a core solo machine and do the bump myself.

kevinbal, i fully agree with you. I think it was great they decided to keep the mini and moved to C2D. I am looking for a media center for my living room, and recently purchased Equinux MediaCentral, which is really great. What can be better than a quiet, small, and also fairly powerful mini (relatively speaking)?

Are you sure about the 802.11n? I also have a iMac C2D and had to use the n enabler to start using it. Have you tried the enabler?

I wirelessly stream movies and music from a LaCie ethernet disk connected to my n-enabled router, and it would be great if the new mini could support that.

Mini

Well, it's fair to say the mini is a disappointment since all they did was push in a different CPU and fiddle with the options and pricing.

Still, I'm buying now. Can't wait any longer to get a media centre PC. I couldn't stand to wait another 300 days for some maybe future update. Long live the mini.

i cant believe the base model still doesnt have a dvd burner...what kind of friggin computer nowadays dont come with a dvd burner??

This may have already been answered
elsewhere but what would be the fastest chip the current Mini
could use if one were to perform a DIY upgrade?
2.33 GHz T7600

People have been using that processor since the Mac mini launched and Core 2 was available.

I have not tried the enabler yet, my new airport extreme (with the gigabit ethernet) shipped today. I'm going to try the enabler as soon as it comes (unless someone else tries and fails).

The new Mac Minis do not have 802.11n - they have 802.11g! I was comparing the specs of Mac Mini and iMac a while ago and found this difference (in addition to the graphics card, hard drive rpm, etc.). So the enabler is not going to help with the Mac Mini.

Well, when the enabler was first put out, the official spec sheets on the machines it worked for said nothing about N anywhere... still said "g". Myself and others (I think) are just hoping for the fact that it might be a quite enable, like the others were. But who knows. Like I said, since the spec sheets say "g" it is not going to be a catastrophe if it doesn't work, but an added bonus if it does.

That'd be great if it does really reveal a 802.11n underneath the Mac Mini!!! But the reason I'm skeptical is because unlike the first time Apple released 802.11n without mentioning it as such, this time they have clearly mentioned 802.11n for the iMac specs.

Anyway, no harm in trying the enabler - if it works it'd be cool! I'm planning to buy the low end Mac Mini myself and this will be an added bonus. :)

I am getting one. I will be using it as a server (both media and web). Expected delivery date:15/08.

I just ordered a 1.83 yesterday on my lunch break to replace my aging Digital Audio PowerMac G4 533 MHz...I figured what the heck, with a speed bump, C2D bump, RAM bump, and HDD bump, I could live with the GMA950. Mine should arrive August 14th. :D

Although, I am curious to see if it does in fact have 802.11n...I'm thinking it might, since the MacBook C2D's had 802.11n yet wasn't advertised by Apple.

Is there a guide somewhere that tells me how to make a mac mini into a media server. How can I make it transmit video on my Mac Pro, PC or within the mac. I dont know how to use the remote since I have a Mac Pro, how does that work? Just want to able to watch videos on any computer that is networked into my Mac Mini hooked up to the Big screen and is ther a way to connect Digital Audio Out from the tv to mac mini?

Ok, how do you set it up a mac mini as a media center. I am looking for one, my brother told me just get the new model and get the new ipod. Still looking for a refurbished mode. Anyway, my main concern is how do you hook up the sound since its not red/white or digital output?

Is there a website that helps you make a mac mini an entertainment system/server?
1. Optical Audio Out
2. Stereo 1/8" to Stereo RCA cable
3. Elgato/Miglia Tuner

It's the same with the £700 MacBook. Still the SuperDrive Mini did come down in price by £100 - i'm very tempted by that one.

The combo drive version of these computers are priced and spec'd (crippled) in such a way so as to get you to spend more money on the better and more expensive model.

Does anyone actually use the Mini as a computer? Doesn't seem like it from what i've read on here.

I don't think the chipset was changed for the mini, only the processor (which required no new engineering). Thus, I doubt it has 802.11n.

Here's my setup. It doesn't talk about our ATV because I've not taken the time to update my page. :(

What about 1080P HD content?

I moved my question to a new mac mini topic..

Yes and no. My mini is my "main" computer, in the sense that given the option, I prefer to do my work at a desk, on my 24" screen. I also have a new 2.2 Ghz SR Macbook Pro replacing a Macbook which replaced a 12" Powerbook. In terms of power, its always seems like my laptop exceeds my desktops at any given time.

The mini is also the media server for the Apple TV in the living room. I've got 2 (and soon to be 3) Western Digital MyBooks hooked up to it with all of my dvds encoded in h264.

What's the noise like on those? seems like it wouldn't work well in a quite movie/tv watching situation. or have you become "fan deaf"? :p

The Mac mini isn't noisy until the fans hit 3000 RPM. This is running it at 200% load and with it on my desk. You're not going to hear it over what you're watching or listening to.
