PC until QC gets better.........I also think Vista is amazing..........

Love macs but after all the issues I have bought a 499.00 Hp and it blows my macbooks away.........

Oh come on, haven't you heard enough people on here tell you how unlucky you must be to understand that what happened to you is a complete fluke and is not representative of Apple's quality control. If it were would Steve's people be dealing with you in such a manner? I have had all of the Apple computers in my signature get me through nearly twenty years and I have only once taken any of them to get fixed and that was the IIgs getting a new battery because we had used it for 6 years or something. The recent article on Apple design mentions Apple's QC going above and beyond any other. For God's sake you can't honestly say you love Mac's and at the same time tell someone not to get one until a time unknown.

Before Macs were real computers, now they are just PCs with good software.

i don't want to just start a rant here.. but im going to. WTF have you been doing to your macs for them to all blow up at you? We've all heard your "stories" and i just plain think your an idiot. You had crappy luck, none of us are complaining about ours, just you. stop telling people that apple can't make a functional computer because its just not true. its ignorant. and if all you're going to do is tell people that apple computers suck, then you shouldn't be adding your advice. sorry to litter up the forums, but it had to be said.

What is so bad about the x86 architecture? Why don't you like the Intel macs?

i know what he means.. powerpc computers some how just feel.. different. it feels more solid and smoother. i have no clue why, but its true. but i wouldnt call the intel architecture crap. its just a different feeling that is probably all phsycological. but i completly agree with him lol

The x86 instruction set architecture is a mess. In contrast, it's easy to read and program RISC assembly (yes, one still drops down to assembly sometimes).

Current x86 processors translate the ISA to RISC-like micro-ops to be able to run fast, so you have this layer of cruft which is just there for backward compatibility.

If Intel thought x86 was so good they wouldn't be trying to move everybody to Itanic (IA-64 is clean, but you cannot expect a human to program in it directly. Plus, the model is not necessarily a good fit for non-numerical programs).

I guess the intel macs could be easier to hack into but I used a iMac at a Apple store once and I could tell you that I didn't see a single difference in stability between the intel mac and my ppc mac. The intel mac was stable and had great performance.
If you have an intel mac right now, what problems did you have with your intel mac anyway?

I don't have an Intel Mac. I still have PPC.
I didn't say anything about the stability of Mactels. Some people can't stand computers which are ugly outside, I can't stand computers which are ugly inside.
I'm really not keen on switching to x86. If it were not for the applications available for the Mac, I would move to Sun/SPARC without hesitation.

So you would want to use Solaris if it had Mac OS X replacement applications?

Solaris might not have some of the fancy features of OS X, but it's still the best current OS (of course everything today sucks compared to Lisp Machines).

Sun doesn't focus on the GUI stuff like Spotlight, Core Image, Core Video, Core Animation. For 'serious' stuff I wouldn't use anything but Solaris (not too confident about Linux).

There's one thing which is wrong in the GUI area of the Mac: the Finder can have whatever look and feel that Apple wants, but it should be based on X Window (yes, I know I said I don't like ugly stuff, but X Window does not mean you have to use Xlib, Xt, Motif, or all that crap).

Then if in your experience Macs have good quality control except for a specific model why don't you specify the model when you give advice. You recommend not to get any Macintosh even though you have "never had crappy luck before" and now you have bad luck and they go above and beyond to satisfy you. You repay them by repeating your story over and over like the chicken salad story in I Heart Huckabees.

tell that to amazon, google, and ebay (and a lot other) :)

Solaris is getting eaten alive by linux almost everywere except in very few places...

I have to side with you. When I bought my iMac I had to return it like 5 times before I got a "decent" one. I had dead pixels, humming sounds, bad superdrives...etc, and in all my years with PCs, I've never had to return a single one! I really do think Apple has quality control issues. Just for fun, whenvever I go to FS/Best buy I always go check out the iMacs they have on display to see what problems they have...they ALL have dead pixels, humming sounds, etc. Prove me wrong, but I have never actually seen a 24" iMac that is FLAWLESS. Even teh one I setteld with has a humming sound when dimming the screen....I dont want to start a fight, but its just that in my personal experience, every single iMac I tried had a defect in one way or another. So stop treating him like an idiot. If you go buy a new computer and it breaks all those times, see how you feel after.

I feel pretty bad about my oldie iBook, so it's not just new machines. I had to replace its logic board in the first year of use. After that it was working fine for another year when its battery died and needed to be replaced and now I have the logic board issues again. As I said, I feel pretty bad cashing out extra buck for a Mac and having to deal with logic board failures twice in three years.

But I had (almost) zero problems with other Macs I own and I still like OS X better than Windows or Linux or whatever is out there, so I say - Macs are the way to go. My two cents.

If you are referring to me treating cybergypsy like and idiot, I never meant anything like that. Also, isn't "he" actually a she? Anyway, we will just have to let things stand in disagreement since Cybergypsy ended her post with "period!". ;)

Thanks, I also have to say I had the 24"imac and had issues, the fan and the screen.... I do love Apple and they are giving me a 17" macbook pro which I listed for sale, as I will wait a bit before buying another, but the QC problems are really out of hand.
Ps I am a woman :)
