whenvever I go to FS/Best buy I always go check out the iMacs they have on display to see what problems they have...they ALL have dead pixels, humming sounds, etc. Prove me wrong, but I have never actually seen a 24" iMac that is FLAWLESS.

For some reason I can't think of what FS stands for but have you tried an Apple store? All of those display models get abused but just like everyone else everytime I go to the Apple store I walk around the perimeter playing with the Macs and I can only remember being consistently in awe. I have stared at the 24" iMac screen countless times, beautiful if you ask me.

Well, you can't blame Apple for displays with dead pixels. You can blame Apple for not having a zero pixel defect policy (maybe paying a little more).

FS = future shop, it's a canadian thing :)
Im not saying the display isn't nice...its probably the brightest and best looking I've ever seen. But I've seen too many models with dead pixels.Luckily I don't have any.
It's hard to test teh ones on demo in the apple store for defects because its noisy in there b ecause tehre a re lots of people buying apple computers :)

I do think that the "defect" thing is extremely subjective...I bet that 9/10 people wouldn't notice a dead pixel, and the same amount wouldn't notice the "hum". For for every 10, theres one like me, who absolutely wants a perfect machine.

Solaris might not have some of the fancy features of OS X, but it's still the best current OS (of course everything today sucks compared to Lisp Machines).

It has been a few year since I last used Solaris. But, it had so many issues it was not funny. The only worse version of Unix was AIX.

What really gets me though is the dinky hardrive that comes with the mac mini and the lack of a dvd burner for the base model.

A dvd burner is so standard nowadays and the small hardrive is just ridiculas.

Any reasoning behind it? Or is it cause it's apple thats why its the way it is?

It uses laptop components and unlike the iMac, that includes the hard drive.
Larger ones simply cannot be used internally.
The Mac Mini drives therefore are more expensive and have smaller capacities due to limitations of all laptop drives, not because Apple are jerks. ;)

The DVD drive is stingy, though.

I would expect to see a significant improvement in both. Hardrives have become significantly cheaper. DVD burners are now more common as standard equipment. When the Mini was last updated, DVD +/-RW were still optional on almost all low-end base model machines. In fact, until just recently, we were having to select them as 'options' on our business Dell Desktop/Laptops.

Typical Apple. Form over function.

If you're buying a computer for your house and you actually care about teh appearence/cleanliness of your house, then Macs are good too. Most (99.9%) PCs I've ever come into contact with are just plain ugly. Macs are beautiful, and they can make a nice room even nicer :)

Why don't you give all this Apple-bashing a rest? If you do not like the company, or products, why waste everyone's time with these snide comments? It seems like stuff99, and you, and have a 'mutual admiration society' going.

dude get this straight im a mac fan...but it always bothered me about the hardrive issue and the lack of a dvd burner...just wanted to vent a little

osx is the best

Really thats kind of a contradiction since industrial design is an exercise in combining these two elements. From what we know of Apple, they subscribe to a fundamentalist school of industrial design. ;)

As others have said. Pc's (most) are hidden and Macs are displayed.
