Merging folders instead of replacing is most definitely needed

+1 !! I did not know this happened until I moved a folder with 2 pictures in to the same place with another identically named folder with 600 pictures in.
Upon checking later, I was horrified to only see the 2 pictures in that folder!!

I'd like email built into the OS like on iOS. Make Mail a core app, perhaps a little mail icon next to the clock that tells me how many new emails I have. I dont really want to have to have Mail running all the time.

Also, unify the UI! So many different styles coming from 1st party apps.

Bring some functionality from other OS's. There are quite a few things that Windows and Linux do that Mac OS does not which is a shame really.

Replace iTunes. Rewrite it into a modern app! Coca 64 bit. Strip out all the bloat, separate some functions into other apps (like iOS Apps merging into the Mac App Store) the sync of devices can then be handled by the oft forgotten iSync which will take stuff from iTunes, App Store, QuickTime and iPhoto and sync them to an iDevice!
Build a marketplace into quickTime for Movies and TV Shows. Then iTunes will go back to being about Music and the purchasing of Music.
Quicktime will be about Movies and the purchasing of movies.
App Store will be about Apps (for both platforms)

I think this would be much nicer.

Sync could also happen over Wifi...no matter if your device is plugged in by USB or connected to the network, it will show up in iSync. When you want to sync something wirelessly you have to enter the password of the device. Simples.

I think some big things are coming with Apple this year. Time for Apple to play catchup this time, and hopefully surpass. They've had a lot of time to bake Lion. I think Snow Leopard is the beta version of Lion. Like they had to get something quick out the door to meet Windows 7. None of the major stuff was ready in time, just the underlying foundation code of everything. So they released what they had and that was Snow Leopard. Think of it as a stepping stone. They paved the way for this grand OS, the big show that will be Lion. They got everyone ready with the hardware and the driving force to 64bit.

- TRIM for other brands ssds.
- Better and updated OpenGL for games and to support OSX UI.
- Eliminate some weird options like Folder Actions.
- Full NTFS Read/Write
- Time Machine options like Full and Incremental backup. Not just cumulative backups.
- Better network sockets, Windows 7 run better over ICMP than OSX.
- More integraton with iOS: can run iOS Apps will be good too!
- Make OSX effects more faster! Win 7 with SSD gives me the impression of running faster.

Ditto

The ability to cut files should be at least an option, depending on the user's computer skill, but copy as default. Photos in iPhoto can be cut, so why can't files in Finder?

Only use the word Delete in the right click menu and make it stand out (the use of bold font would facilitate this) after use Mac OS X for more than eight years now and the "Move to Trash" button just doesn't pop out at me as much as it should to make it easier.

The drop down folder menu where is shows the folders within folders and resent folders should be changed to just recent folders in the drop down and an up-folder button and be on the default button collection (unlike the path button which isn't on the default button collection.) At least show the folder within folders in the opposite order to show the folders in a descending order and not the current ascending order.

Finder
  • Tabbed Finder windows.
  • Cut and paste files.
  • Folders in path bar to be spring loaded.
  • Search: ability to display all results at once, not first 10k only; ability to copy and paste more than 10 results at once
  • Easy way to get a file or folder’s path.
  • Ability to Quick Look a folder and see its contents
  • Ability to do things like rename files whilst in Open/Save dialog boxes
  • View zip file contents, add to zip file

Servers
  • Easy way to connect to servers on login without Finder windows opening.
  • Finder windows to properly update when files are changed (e.g. date modified doesn’t update until selecting that file)
  • Servers to always show up in the Finder sidebar

Other
  • Dashboard widgets to load themselves on login, not on the first activation of Dashboard
  • More powerful Automator - it never quite does enough
  • Consistent shortcut keys for home, end etc.
  • Ability to prevent icons in the Dock from endlessly bouncing

I use Folder Actions a lot.
Now that I think about it folder actions could use a redesign that could end up being a killer feature. As it is right now it's fairly complex and not really useable for novice computer users. If folder actions could be integrated into Automator better or useful sample folder actions come with the OS that would be useful. Even folder actions that come in default folders; like downloads, documents, pictures, etc; could be extremely useful.

I agree Automator should be the starting point for all system/app automation. If you second click a folder the option to attach an action should take you to automator. From there you can drag in Applescript/shell script action. They could a library of code snippets for both of these action types.

I don't know if Automator is seeing any sort of upgrade but it would nice if it did see some improvements. Like a simple interface builder so you could bundle exposed controls into a logical interface. Plus some program logic controls would be good, Even a simple if/then/else action that could switch between to actions, or something full on visual like quartz composer object models.

Some things I would like:
  • Clicking on the title bar of any window scrolls to the top of the window! Like on iOS when you click the top bar in Safari
  • Quickly pressing the space bar twice inserts a period
  • Some command to enter full screen
