Ditch the Finder for something a bit more like PathFinder. Although I'm not wishing Apple to put that guy out of business of course...

My personal biggest OSX Finder gripe is the lame way it handles network resources. I want to be able to map a network drive easily without fiddling with startup options. I also don't want any network wobbles to cause the Finder to hang/crash. This has happened on every Mac I've had since switching in 2005...

Otherwise, yeah, resolution independence would be nice (contrary to many others' views, I'd like to make some fonts SMALLER so as to maximise what I can fit on my screens, especially when I'm working on the low-res MBP).

Can't think of anything else I'd like. It's largely fine, apart from the f**kin' Finder...

Hangs are inevitable because network access attempts basically have to time out. Perhaps if it were multithreaded the problem could be avoided.

I'm not sure what problem you are seeing with mapping a network drive. It's much easier than Windows (at least XP which I use) or, by far, Linux. I just navigate to the folder I want to map and create an alias (command-option drag the folder). At any time in the future, double-clicking on the alias or drilling down through it in an file open dialog (for instance) will automatically mount it.

Hi Talmy - are you the same Talmy from MacOSG btw? I joined here only recently after I realised that the MacOSG forums are all but dead these days - pity.

Anyway, I agree - multithreading would help, but quite aside from that I've found problems working properly with shares on a QNap TS-119Pro drive. From time to time accessing the drive (either via WiFi or via ethernet) simply causes the Finder to hang. This is with either of SMB or AFP or both enabled.

It's a pity but I am sure it's a Finder flaw as I have had a similar situation occur when working with SMB shares on a Windows 2008 R2 server in my office.

FWIW, however, the same single-threading problem seems to affect PathFinder also (great app in all other respects). Perhaps they could make the UI on a different thread to the network connection, and allow the UI thread to kill that errant thread if required.... just a thought. I think the problem may be buried deeper in OSX, though, as I've found that if a network hangs the Finder, it'll also hang PathFinder. Not certain if it works the other way around however...

Yes. I still go there, but there isn't enough volume to keep it interesting.

Yep, windows does it too. If each Finder window ran on a separate thread then a network problem would only freeze that one window. The problem with network access is that it can actually be very slow.

That's a big part of the problem the other part of is file size somethings just need big files. Those tend to be stuff your doing in groups so really effected by network issues. Multi threading isn't going to be a big help there. Well not unless they introduce tricks to sync big files without writing out the whole each time. That would help with a lot issues.

Sounds like a job for 99c app man...

And one that would be easy to write since on the "business" end it just needs to call system("tar...

Maybe someone will make a free app that does it just to put an end to this discussion. :)

Hopefully they will do a better job on the interface than Apple did with the one they included with Developer Tools. To bad that one is a PITA to use otherwise I'd say Apple should just release it on the Store.

1.Can disable some monitor signal when connect 2 or more monitor
For Example, if I have 3 monitors
I can use 3 , 2 or 1 monitor only at a time

2. Add one more mode of Remote Desktop work like a Windows
Can set the resolution in the remote client
Then force logout from server side
Can login from different client , user at the same time

3. Finder can get more file information in detail mode

4. Wake On Lan when the computer is shutdown

1. Resolution Independence.

2. RIGHT CLICK OPTION IN FINDER TO CREATE A NEW FILE! Which is simply the most annoying part of OSX in my own opinion.

3. Transparency control for menu bar (slider not just option).

4. New default dock background image.

Been planned for years, I'll be impressed if it actually shows up now.

Not sure what you mean here. New file? What type of file? Finder isn't for creating files, it's for managing them. Folders and aliases are about the only that you can create in the Finder, and that's the way it should be.

You know how Apple is about customization, don't expect this.

4. New default dock background image.

What's wrong with the current one? They'll probably change the Dock slightly, they like to do that with each release. Gives a nice quick visual identification of the version of OS X you're dealing with if you're a tech, so I like it.

Windows has create new files in the Windows Explorer, so I expect that is what MCMarshall wants. I never found that particularly useful as I'd rather create new files in the appropriate application program.

Indeed I doubt it'll bring Resolution Independence, but we can hope. Just to polish off a perfectly good OS.

I am an advocate of being able to right-click and create files in place. Yes it's to browse files however I do not see why you should not be able to create them too. As a developer I do find it quite annoying, especially if I want to add a quick note inside a folder. This used to be possible with some form of component add-on before Snow Leopard.

Other comments - I like new things.

What are the chances of Apple maybe just acquiring Cocoatech?

Pathfinder is really miles ahead of what Apple has done with Finder.

I use create new file all the time. I made an automator action that runs bash touch command and makes a new text file.
