Last week I updated two of my macs from Sequoia to Tahoe 26.0.1. While everything went smoothly on my 16" M1 MBP, there was a strange thing happening on my M1 Mini: The language (and also the time format) on the boot lock screen changed from German to English, although English had never been on the list of languages in the Preferences pane ("Language & Region"). After logging in and out, the language on the lock screen changed to German, as intended. But after rebooting, it changed back to English.

In case anyone of you runs into a similar bug, maybe with another language, here is a fix:
  • add "English" in the Preferences pane and move it to the top, to make it the primary language
  • reboot
  • login, open the Preferences pane again and move your language (e.g., "German") to the top, to make it the primary language
  • reboot

Thanks for your reply. I did not have any of those problems with Sequoia. My mistake for upgrading.
got it. but since these aren't commonly-reported issues... something specific is happening for you. so, issues to be looked at, not universal system bugs.

there's nothing to lose (and perhaps much to gain) by starting a thread, and/or calling apple...

not what i said, at all. 🙄

a rant is a rant, no matter who's ranting 🤣. a discussion is generally more productive, don't you think?

read the thread title again; how does this engage a forum of thinking people? and if all you want is a thread where everyone rants in unison, why post on a forum where others might have a different take? why are some ppl so afraid of a different POV? 🤔

This is the only time I'm going to respond to you about this, because we've had this exact same discussion and you refuse to understand it despite it being explained to you multiple times in different ways.

No one is 'afraid' of other POVs, stop insinuating or implying negative traits about people that haven't been expressed or demonstrated.

I never said I want threads where everyone rants in unison. Again, stop implying things and using hyperbole to distort other people's words. You continuously do this and then wonder why you get hostile responses.

I don't care about the thread title. I simply ignore threads I don't care about.

Don't look. Don't see.

If you want to reduce these kinds of topics and this format of discussion, stop participating in it, bumping it, increasing the reply count, and let it die off normally. The only other reasons I could think of to participate in a topic you don't like is to; purposely derail it or to shut people down from participating in a way you don't like.

I would have thought the sarcasm in my reply was rather obvious, so you're either unfamiliar with the concept, or you chose to ignore it.

It wasn't obvious, unfortunately.

I've been misunderstood in a similar way here before.

Always good to be safe with an /s tag
;)

This really doesn't read as sarcastic to me 👇 🤷‍♂️

that was the only OSX i never used as i had the same aspect on ElCapitain sunday hole bridging that to High Sierra.
El Cap did everything needed that hour and was actually fun and suck to use on a MBA2010.

furthermore tomatoes are still expensive to hurl so perhaps starfruit or rocks might be tossed!
Now, now..starfruit is fine to throw as I could recover after the bruises, but throwing rocks would be worthy if i suggested, “Hey, I have an idea, let us all go to Windows instead..”. As a solution. Expensive tomatos are not even worthy of that suggestion. 😂

It's clear that the next generation of useless engineers are completely taking over those that built the iPhone and OS X, and it's a sad day.

I have never thought I would say I would be installing garbage from Apple, but here it is. OS 26 Tahoa is truly garbage and an affront to what Jobs and Ives built.

You can see the carelessness and horrible work throughout. Non cohesive designs, BUGS EVERYWHERE, loss of caring of whats going on behind the hood, and chasing visual eye candy over function.

Its sad.

I cant even get my tabs to work correctly in safari and have to access the sidebar to access them correct (icons bugging out etc).

Apple really needs to sit down and fire half its team and spend a whole major version update just clearing the junk that has been built up and going back to building functional systems first, we have reached windows Vista level of garbage...
Yep, been saying this for a good decade now.. Spot on.

wow Tahoe (and ) is getting worse!

im trying to watch a cycling event on the Mac mini m1 NOW as "teh internets" won't launch then circles
meanwhile the stream is fine on my Dinosaur MBA10, using Mojave.......huh?
that tip menu bar is hard to see what is the Tahoe menu and Vivaldi menu as they merge?
safari keeps popping up anamie porn sites on cycling news, a digit website?
the history is cleared out and surfing is strict.

meanwhile my iPad won't type with a Logitech keyboard since Thursday
Apple Pencil disconnects, iPhone won't received live call just a reminder to update my iCloud on Mojave instead.
tv stutters when watching a MP4 from the macmini.
I guess Tahoe is spiraling downwards to keep up with other ineffective  software!

way to go TIMS!

Steve Jobs released OS X 10.0 with half the features missing and extremely slow UI. How about you try that?
10.0 literally shipped missing the DVD player application, while Apple was actively selling a computer called the iMac DV, who’s main advertised feature was the ability to watch DVDs and burn DVDs, which… you literally couldn’t do in 10.0.
That will never not be the funniest thing to me.
The other funniest thing is the people who insist Steve would have never allowed the Apple Intelligence delays…
But he originally announced that OS X would start shipping in 1999.
It started shipping in March 2001, almost two years late, and wasn’t the default OS until 2002, four years after it was originally announced back in 1998.

Tahoe is indeed truly garbage, but it's an affront to what Jobs and Forstall built, not what Ive built. Ive is the one who started this whole mess of removing all of the skeuomorphic design that Jobs and Forstall built, and replacing it with flat design. It started with iOS 7 in 2013, which fully replaced skeuomorphic design with flat design. As for macOS, Ive partially started that process in 2013 with OS X Mavericks (version 10.9) with a few of its apps, and then in 2014 fully removed all of the skeuomorphic design and replaced it with flat design in OS X Yosemite (version 10.10). macOS 26 Tahoe uses a flat design variant called glassmorphism, so although Ive is not working at Apple, he deserves the blame for getting rid of skeuomorphism and replacing it with flat design. And Cook deserves blame for being so clueless and mediocre as to fire Forstall, as well as for allowing Ive to completely purge Apple's industry-leading skeuomorphic design that had been built on over three decades of painstaking user-friendliness research by Apple.
Forstall was never in charge of macOS.
He *worked* on early versions, but he was only ever head of iOS, and before that simply in charge of “platforms”.
The person in charge of Mac OS X during the majority of the time that Jobs was CEO was Bertrand Serlet.
Also the several earliest versions of OS X used quite a bit of transparency and flatness.

Forstall was a leading designer of Mac OS X's Aqua interface:
Forstall joined Steve Jobs's NeXT in 1992 and stayed when it was purchased by Apple in 1997. Forstall was then placed in charge of designing user interfaces for a reinvigorated Macintosh line. In 2000, Forstall became a leading designer of the Mac's new Aqua user interface, known for its water-themed visual cues such as translucent icons and reflections, making him a rising star in the company.

In 2006, Forstall was responsible for Mac OS X releases:
In 2006, Forstall became responsible for Mac OS X releases after Avie Tevanian stepped down as the company's Chief Software Technology Officer and before being named SVP of iPhone Software.

The earliest versions of Mac OS X used translucecy, but not flat design. Prior to 2013, the translucency used in Mac OS X was combined with skeuomorphism, not with flat design. macOS Tahoe and iOS 26 use glassmorphism, which is a variant of flat design. Glassmorphism uses translucecy combined with flat design.

Shhh, don't give Apple any ideas now that all of their devices run on AS. I can see the day where they might/could stop signing a macOS release just like with the rest of their mobile devices, making a downgrade impossible.

That will be when I exit stage left from Apple.

I want nothing to do with my primary computer being "nannied" to death by Apple. I don't want them getting their greedy hands on all the financial interactions, nor do I need them telling me what's "ok" or not.

This is especially true given their conduct this calendar year.

Just installed macOS 26 on my external drive to have a look at…… 🥴
Naaaaah…..don’t like it, seems very juvenile….🤪

I have no intention of upgrading anyway for at least a year (only just upgraded to macOS 15).
So we will see if it improves.

What’s this all about…..some third party app icons show this
IconError.png

Apple have ‘finally’ updated the internal drive icon to an SSD though, about time.
Although it does still say show ‘hard disks’ on the desktop in finder settings…. 🤪

I downloaded this piece of garbage without even thinkng that it would be junk. Not only that but to try to go back a version is a nightmare. I am seriously considering getting rid of Apple and buying all windows architecture

Well sorry for going against the grain here, but I actually don't mind it at all.

I generally do not upgrade my main computer for at least 6 months or so, mainly down to waiting for my RAID drivers etc to be updated, but they've been quite quick to update this time so I decided to go ahead this year. So running Tahoe on my computer - no issues in my daily usage at all. It's been perfectly fine for me, which is a first!

Likewise, iOS26 on both my iPhone and iPad have also been fine.
I am always fascinated when people say they don’t encounter any problems, especially when I encounter a problem in that exact moment. In this case it’s spontaneously dark status bar and the differently colored icons.

I like for people not to have bugs. I just question if they simply don’t notice when they happen.

or they're being honest about their experiences? i am also not experiencing any bugs (& yes, i see the places that need fixing). but nothing is getting in my way of working/playing.

we don't all have the same experiences, opinions. it's one of the things that make places like worth hanging out in...
