Update attempted using Software Update in System Preferences, when given the option to upgrade Catalina to Big Sur - which only occurred with Beta 5. Now attempting a clean install using a bootable USB...

Let me know how it goes. Are you clean installing Catalina or Big Sur with the USB?

I didn't even get as far as you, this is what I get when trying to run it from System Update:

First try will be Big Sur, if that doesn't work I'll use recovery to install Catalina.

I didn't get the error you got preparing the update.

In my case, I was able to switch the Startup Disk back to Catalina, and it booted Catalina fine, so the Big Sur install attempt hadn't gotten very far - but further than your attempt!

Big Sur clean install gave the same result as the upgrade attempt: stalled at Apple logo after reboot; no install done.
Rebooted into Catalina and will await Beta 6?

Seems like the best bet. I lost a ridiculous amount of time when I got the iMac trying to get onto the beta at all. Frustrating that a few weeks later still doesn't work...

Update to Beta 5 from Catalina on a 2020 27" iMac is not proceeding past the white apple on a black background after booting. Reinstalling Caltalina as per the release notes...

Anyone with a different outcome on a 2020 27" iMac?

The changelog states that the 2020 iMac is not yet supported.

Yes thanks, that's been covered in this thread multiple times already.
It was, yes, however, both of the replies I have quoted above were posted after the discussion abut what the changelog states, so I was left with the impression that you guys haven’t seen what was posted above.

Hi, I updated to beta 5 today on my 2018 Mac mini, and it crashes and restarts shortly after boot up into the desktop.

Is there anything I can try before I do a restore? I’ve never had an issue like this with any prior betas.

Thank you!

Wish I read this before forcing it through on my 2020 iMac that just came today. Stuck on the Apple logo.

Guess it’s time to reinstall Catalina. Oops.

I was able to just select my regular HD hard restarting with option held down. Did you not try this before reinstalling Catalina?

Finally downloaded and installed on my 2018 15" MBPro. Only took many attempts and several hours, but to be fair, I took my stepdaughter to her karate class in between.

News of beta 4 dropped around 1:40pm PDT August 4 on Macrumors and 9to5, so I'd guess if it's happening today, we have until 2pm PDT to see something pop.

Edit: I've only loaded Big Sur starting with dev beta 4 on my iMac, and have only had issues so far with Little Snitch (new v5 builds based on the Network Extension framework). Adobe CC products, Transmission, Music, Mail, Reeder, Spotify, etc. work as expected. Pretty happy with it overall.

Have you tried the little snitch tech preview? It’s working great with the Big Sur betas so far.

Does this update need 50gb free space during install? Public beta 1 did and I'm wondering if I need to clear some space for today when Public beta 2 hits.

Parallels V16 causes a kernel panic as soon as I launch my Windows10 VM - worked fine on Beta 4. - anyone else see an issue?
Change in the VM config -> Hardware -> CPU & Memory -> Advanced Settings -> Hypervisor from Parallels to Apple and try to start it again. It was helping me to get it running again.

How is beta 5 from beta 4 so far for you guys?

I know its only been a day but sometimes that can be enough of continuous use to make basic observations

I'm glad to be on PB, let the dev build guinea pigs try first :p
