Do you all think that Monterey will no longer be supported after the 12.7.6 update?
Remember that a lot of versions have had thirty last updates in July.

I can't say if Apple will "tick" up the version to 12.7.7 at the end. The previous Big Sur last update (last September) also changed the last digit in version number. So, hard to predict, as it depends on how the last update changes.

Something similar can happen that might also affect Monterey, eh? I think you can safely say that Monterey is winding down, with no further updates after September. The final release of Sequoia will "seal the deal" for Monterey.

I have OCLP Monterey 12.6.3 running on 4 2011 iMacs, 32GB RAM and SSD, all installed in January 2023. I still have the original 12.6.3 installer.

They're all running perfectly so at this time it's not worth taking the risk of upgrading to 12.7.x and finding out something was broken or deprecated. Unless there are programs that eventually require a baseline of ≥12.7, they are staying put.

But you are missing out on security updates.

That's the case with any OS before Monterey, they're all out of support by now. CrowdStrike shows us that you are more vulnerable to issues on Windows, even with a fully patched OS.

Or, use one of the apps that provide download links for whatever macOS software that you might be looking for.
I presently keep several. OpenCore-Patcher can be used to download macOS versions, including latest versions, even if you don't actually use the patching function of that software. The Mist app is another. ANYmacOS app is another I have found that is easy to use. I commonly use an older version of MDS. So, there is a variety of methods to get updates, software update is not the only method.

No You will need to get it using software update in system preferences.

To my knowledge Apple no longer provides combo/delta updates, I believe Software Update now always downloads the complete OS when installing, I remember Big Sur doing this.

Takes 4 minutes to download on a fiber connection. The entire 12.7.6 OS is available on the swscan catalog along with the Safari 17.6 update, the newest updates are near the bottom of the log:

I feel sorry to all those who bought a *new* 2013 MacPro 6,1 in 2019/2020... I picked up a cheap 1 in excellent condition (12 core D700 1TB SSD 64GB RAM $400) a few days before the 12.7.6 update was posted thinking I'd wipe it and install Linux. Good thing I never got around to it just in case Apple slips out 1 more firmware update.

Maybe i'll give OCLP with Sonoma a try. Didn't have much luck with anything over Monterey on my 5,1... and it still plays nicely with Monterey and Linux.

Who bought a 2013 in 2019/2020?

I think anything ≥ Catalina on a 5,1 is really pushing it...the Core 2 Duos just don't perform that well with modern browsers and OS bloat...the install files for the modern OS' are ~ 15GB.

Hi Mr W,

Good post!

Comment:
Little gutted Monterey is out going.
Its been really stable for the M1 MBA (16Gb) and M1 iMac (8Gb)

Will give it at least week before upgrading both to Senoma. Lets see if there is a an emergency mini update of the latest version of Senoma this month.

Questions:
Can I ask here, as on subject

Q1) Is senoma GUI all that different to Monterey?

Q2) Do the iMessages / Texts sync up better on Senoma. This is the one item that's real hit and miss on Monterey.

We pretty much use our Macs as standalone - not attaching to monitors etc.

Hope you can advise

Regards
Martin

Based on past practice, Apple will continue to provide security support for Monterey until Sequoia comes out, which should be Sept. or Oct. (Sonoma was released late Sept; Monterey and Ventura were released late Oct).

That's what they've done consistently for the last several generations: Continue to provide security support for an OS until OS + 3 is released, giving three years of support.

Whether or not we actually get another update depends on whether a security threat is found, and whether Apple decides it's worth devoting the resources to release a patch—Apple has warned that the security support they give to non-current (but still supported) OS's may not be as extensive as what the current OS receives.

I don't get the fixation with OCLP. If I have a Mac Pro (aka Xeon Workstation) I'm more interested in having a rock-solid stable system than surfing the wave of compatibility hacks from pseudonymous developers.

The question wasn't whether 12.7.6 will be the last update for Sonoma, but when the support will end.

According to Wikipedia, Mojave was officially unsupported as of October 2021 (the same month Monterey was released), and Catalina was officially unsupported as of Nov. 30, 2022* (one month after Ventura was released on Oct 24, 2022), indicating if there were a significant and patchable security threat after July of those years, an additional update would have been made.

Further, the actual last security update to Mojave was on Sept 13, 2021 (Safari 14.1.2) and to Catalina on Aug 18, 2022 (Safari 15.6.1). So while these were not updates to the OS, these were security updates to a core OS-associated app, indicating continued support.

*Given this, I should edit my original statement from this:

"Based on past practice, Apple will continue to provide security support for Monterey until Sequoia comes out..."

to this:

"Based on past practice, Apple will continue to provide security support for Monterey at least until Sequoia comes out, and possibly for a month later...."
